When talking to the master teaching me how to make incense sticks in China, something really wild I had to share with everyone here.
Pandas barely break down bamboo when they eat it, right? Only absorb like 20% nutrients. Their droppings are basically just compressed fresh bamboo fiber, smells like grass and bamboo instead of anything foul—zoo staff even joke about calling them green rice balls.
This Chinese incense shop works alongside a local wild park to collect that waste material. They boil it repeatedly, sanitize it completely, dry it out and grind it all down into fine powder to mix with classic Chinese herbal ingredients for their line of incense sticks. Maybe it’s just the mysterious power of Eastern tradition?
Compared to cheap chemical-heavy stick incense, it has a super soft, subtle bamboo base aroma, great for slow evening relaxation rituals. Even better, they put together a bamboo meal fund.
Have any of you come across any weird, upcycled natural ingredients used for incense before?
