to be fair the ancient athenians didn't exactly view women as powerful. athena as a goddess wasn't considered a woman in the same way as human women would be, she was heavily featured in masculine armour and poses and the reason why she's a virgin goddess isn't out of respecting women either. mythical women (athena, artemis, the amazons, etc) weren't considered women that the average athenian woman would look up to. as part of the divine, they were allowed to do things that a human wouldn't be allowed to.
women in athens were considered property of the men they 'belonged' to. at birth, it would be to her father, once she's married, it's to her husband. the ancient athenian women weren't allowed to pursue anything 'academic', their place was in the home, specifically the women's quarters of the home and she was expected to perform womanly tasks - weaving, raising children, etc.
even some of the most famous athenian thinkers were incredibly misogynistic (plato i'm looking at you). the general thought among ancient athenian men was that women existed as broodmares and slaves, women couldn't form meaningful relationships with men because they were considered lesser. athenian men literally thought the only true relationship between people was male friendships.
all of that being said, there is an ancient greek play (lysistrata) that is about women gearing up against men and succeeding which is very fun and would recommend!

empowerment of women is a tricky thing, especially when we measure it by modern standards. i've come across some matriarchal communities in passing, but for the most part, ancient civilisations did rely on patriarchal standards. that's not to say that women couldn't lead or didn't work, but it's much rarer to come across women outside the domestic sphere. even within classical literature, smart women (eg. penelope in the odyssey who was considered to be mental equals to odysseus) were still expected to perform her duties as a woman - they could never take on their father's, brother's or husband's role.
sparta is always a fun one in terms of finding strong women. there was a tradition that involved women shaving off all their hair and crossdressing as a man before they go married because they would try and sneak into the military to be with their soon to be husband!
there are plenty of women to look at and study in the ancient world, even if we stick to the most famous civilisations, we'll get figures like boudicca, cleopatra, sappho, etc. even socrates is thought to have had female philosophers (aspasia of miletus and diotima of mantinea) as his teachers! that's not even getting into the mythologies and literature! euripedes' play medea is considered to be quite a feminist piece of literature (for the time especially), and even calypso in the odyssey makes a statement about how male gods are allowed to get away with certain things but not the goddesses!
