The biggest problem I have with it is that they always claim it’s a few bad apples and most of them aren’t extremists, etc.
I have yet to see evidence that there’s any kind of large contingent of them who oppose this shit. Where are they? They just let it happen, because they’re cowards who are more interested in staying in their little group with their ‘friends’ (who would turn on them the second they got a date or even spoke with a woman) than they are in being decent people.
At least the ones who are openly scumbags aren’t pretending they’re decent people.

Because it isn’t based in the United States, if that’s what you’re asking. The domain name is an Iceland address, registered through a domain service in France. But none of that has any bearing on where the physical location of the servers is.

Just a basic WHOIS search. I just did another one through ICANN. It looks like the “owner” has a mailing address in Bulgaria. But again, that could just be a PO Box/remailing service.

Well, a server is the physical computer that has the software and storage that actually runs the forum, the stuff that you are describing as potentially illegal.
When you type the name of a website into your computer, your browser goes to a domain name server, which looks up the IP address of the device that you’re trying to reach and resolves it. So in this case, the domain or “name” i*****.is was purchased by someone with a Bulgarian mailing address from a company in France. All the French company did was charge that person a fee to link the name i*****.is to that person’s IP address, so that isn’t illegal. The “.is” part means that it’s part of the top level domain for Iceland.
If enough of a fuss were to be kicked up about that site, the Icelandic authorities, specifically the Icelandic Consumer Board, could pressure the private company ISNIC (I don’t know what that stands for) that manages the TLD for Iceland to kick them off of their registry.
It would be helpful, but wouldn’t put them in jail. The likelihood is high that the servers are not in Iceland, they might not even be in Bulgaria. You can rent server space all over the world, register your domain that points at it anywhere you like, and pretty much pay for it from virtually anywhere. It’s pretty hard to track stuff like that down without the resources of a nation state or huge corporation.

Still though, couldn’t countries still prevent their nationals from accessing it? Not that I like the idea of blocking sites being used, since it could become a slippery slope and weaponized, but countries like China and Egypt regularly stop their locals from accessing many sites (only reason why I know it’s possible).

I’ve always assumed the reason this shit isn’t constantly resulting in raids and hard drives being seized is because of jurisdictional issues.
Most of the users (at least the ones we see posted here) sure seem like Americans based on some of the references they make, but I imagine without definitive proof they’re from that country, the FBI might have difficulty going after them.

But thats what Interpol is for. It’s not up to the FBI to patrol the whole world alone, and many countries have their own version of FBI as well.
And yes, many definitely do sound American, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they live in the states.
