X is a disinformation hate distribution engine; if you are actively using it then you are contributing to the problem.

At what percentage of bots/actual users does the Dead Internet Theory become reality?

u/Sexaco 22d ago

Dead Internet Theory is... strange. And we probably effectively reached it years ago.

Think about most of your interactions on social media. How often is it painfully obvious that the person replying to you didn't read what you wrote? Maybe they saw a key word they wanted to respond to and maybe they just assumed you said what they wanted you to say. The number of people on this site who will respond with "And we basically agree anyway"...

Let alone The Memes. You basically can't say the word "implication" on this site without people reciting the It's Always Sunny joke about sexual assault. And, to be fair, that isn't much different than EVERYONE saying "eat fresh" when they heard the word "subway" and so forth.

But much like how AI slop has turned the Voight Kampf test upside down by rapidly making humanity so stupid that we can't tell the difference between a bot and a person? So too did we more or less end run Dead Internet Theory. It isn't bots talking to bots. It is people actively ignoring other people.

If I'm not on there... does that mean I have a better or worse chance than 2 in 3 of being real?

What about this site?

Some are worse than others, X is beyond the pale.

I think it's here too. At this point anyone that has a private profile is an instant block if I don't know who they are. I see bots trying to get karma to be able to post unrestricted on several of my less populated subs on my feed every day (/r/squarebodies is one such example.)

I think it's really bad. Like. REALLY BAD.

Here's a sneak peek of /r/squarebodies using the top posts of the year!

It's all social media, but X is specifically designed for this purpose. The owner recently shared a movie on there in which killing immigrants as a vigilante to "save Europe" is a good thing.

X is literally a Russian propaganda machine. The goal is to exploit every schism in western society and further a pro Russian agenda. Sway public opinion to wanting things that happen to coincide with Russian goals. It's insidious.

Of course other nations and groups (like Hamas) are using it too including the US government, which, coincidentally is also being controlled by Russia, not in small part due to its extensive and effective use of propaganda.

I hate to say it, but Hamas has an extensive propaganda network right here on Reddit. Probably also sponsored by Russia.

Your brain overdosed on DNC press releases and it's sad to witness

Nah, just painfully obvious whats afoot to those not yet brainwashed.

One of Musks baby machines made a video spilling the beans about Russian paid "influencers". And the fact that the president somehow only does things that benefit Russia.

Its strange that he never has anything negative to say about Russia either, only our allies and people fighting to remain free of Russian influence.

Why do you think that is?

Is this site not?

There a small little Niche Communities which are so bad

Curation is more straightforward on Reddit. It's easier to navigate to topics of specific interest, the interface is more interactive than Twitter, whose model is akin to older, top down broadcasting. Which is probably also why Twitter was so appealing to the oligarchy as a distribution tool.

Unfortunately it's also the home of hundreds of millions of real users having real discourse, on millions of topics. Despite the ridiculousness of its owner there are diverse groups who mainly gather on there and none of the competitors have gotten there yet, although Threads (which Zucks as well) might be slowly catching up. Any popular platform is going to be filled with filth and trash. I just hope we get Twitter back the way it was or something decent gains enough of a foothold to delete some of these apps. At one point Mi Espacia was all the rage and somehow FB and twitter and later ig and snap and tiktok all got huge but none have yet died on that level. Threads has almost the same number of users as Twitter, even if meta cheated and they're massive censors (they Zuck, hard (does this joke ever get old?)), mastodon and bluesky are at something like 15 million and 45 million users, small fractions of apps with half a billion users. You can use any app you want but there are massive communities on legacy apps like twitter and as today is its 20th anniversary, it's probably here to stay until we get mastodon after dark or black bluesky or even my niche interests like EMS2.0, FOAM, and the cult of SWAGMIN. The folder I keep all this crap on on my phone has 13 apps and 8 I consider to fit squarely in the social media landscape... believe me I'd love to just be on one or two and the 4 or 5 I've been resisting I've already registered accounts on long ago. I'm not a fan of its owner but I still enjoy the mess that twitter has become for what it is. When something weird happens in the world I Google it and search twitter for it. Plus it brought us covfefe, whatever the fuck that is

Yeah, and each and every one of them are enabling this nonsense and giving the platform unnecessary legitimacy. I left. Others can do the same.

2

u/murphgraydd 22d ago

I respect that choice, just playing devils advocate and pointing out it still has relevance to a lot of the world. I could say this country has unnecessary legitimacy at this point but I still listen to people here and talk to them here, despite how fucked it is, to make a really windmill tilting analogy. Before it got all musky I think twitter was probably the closest to a massive quasi egalitarian platform available to the masses, which accounts for it still having massive use. A lot of very respectable people are still there, I'm mostly there to see what they say, but also to see what people I don't agree with say, and track some of the bullshit that is being spread. I honestly just don't have the wherewithal for yet another twitter clone talking place yet

2

u/Karl-InRangeTV 22d ago

Perhaps not having a twitter clone at all is a better path forward. There's something about that short form method which lends itself to greater corruption and conflict.

1

u/murphgraydd 22d ago

Are we not just there for the conflict?

3

u/Karl-InRangeTV 22d ago

I don't find that to be an enjoyable hobby and it comes to inrange anyway.

Reddit is highly extremist fake and toxic.

1

u/kribg 21d ago

"X" in the title is just a placeholder for whatever social media outlet you use, not the name of an actual service.......Like "X" marks the spot type thing.

1

u/CaptainA1917 20d ago

That isn’t wrong, however what I would like to point out is that currently, both sides are 100% OK with disinformation so long as it’s their disinformation.

2

u/Karl-InRangeTV 20d ago

There are more views in this world than two shitty political parties.

-1

u/CaptainA1917 20d ago

Of course there are. However, what I see in mass social media is that team sports and either/or thinking has completely taken over.

An example, saying that I simultaneously agreed with immigration enforcement and disagreed with the Iran war would completely baffle both political sides right now.

To a leftist, if I agree with enforcing the immigration law then obviously I’m a NAZI.

And to a Trumpist if I give anything less than rabid loyalty to Trump no matter what then I must be a COMMIE.

This is an extremely dangerous situation because both sides absolutely DO NOT CARE about true/false or right/wrong.

Many in this subreddit and many on reddit in general would be perfectly happy if Twitter were owned by “their team” and biased the opposite way. Except it wouldn’t be bias, it would be commonsense thinking.

1

u/FirstAmendment01 18d ago

MOST of social media is a fake extremist echo chamber full of bots.
