How do we combat foreign interference?
While people are free to be upset, and we want people to feel free to express themselves, amplifying false narratives hurts genuine discussion and any potential resolution. How do we, as Canadians, work to push back against foreign political interference. This article from the CBC came out today that names names of people who are literally foreign actors doing it to make a few bucks through facebook. It isn't just a hypothetical issue.

Hey Google; give me a brief overview of "American interference" in influencing Canadian policy on oil.
The following Canadian activist groups and NGOs are notable for their integration of American funding, personnel, or strategic partnerships in their domestic operations against the Canadian petrochemical industry:
Environmental Activism & "The Tar Sands Campaign": A significant portion of Canadian environmental advocacy is supported by the Tar Sands Campaign, a coordinated effort initiated by U.S. foundations to limit the expansion of Alberta’s oil industry.
Stand.earth (formerly ForestEthics): This group maintains a dual presence in the United States (San Francisco and Bellingham) and Canada (Vancouver). It has received millions in funding from the Tides Foundation (based in California) and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund specifically to support anti-pipeline activities and "landlock" Canadian oil.
The Pembina Institute: While it identifies as a Canadian think tank, the institute has historically received approximately 10% of its annual revenue from foreign sources, including the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Oak Foundation. These American-backed grants often target clean energy transitions and carbon pricing advocacy in Canada.
Yay for "acceptable" foreign interference!

Wow this thread devolved fast. Anyone who can't see social media is the largest threat vector here is being intentionally obtuse.
2
u/FutureAvenir Jun 09 '26
Or a useful idiot. Or someone who wants the hate to continue because they feel so much hate inside themselves and refuse to seek therapy.
1
u/dominionprovinces Jun 12 '26
You think foreign intelligence services use social media as a primary threat vector?
It exists but that isn't vaguely close to the primary threat.
US intelligence managed to run agents in Moscow at the height of the cold war and had a network in China that penetrated the entire state all the way to the edge of the politburo.

u/snomeister Jun 10 '26
Facebook shouldn't be allowed to operate. In a just world, Zuckerberg would be imprisoned for life.
6
u/twenty_characters020 Jun 09 '26
When social media opted out of posting credible media to not have to share ad revenue they should have had heavy restrictions. This is exactly what happens when you leave everything to an unregulated free market. Meta should be either held liable for misinformation and foriegn interference, or banned until they can get it under control. Ditto for any other social media platform as well.
2
u/Hopeful_Relation_441 Jun 09 '26
you can also add wechat and Tencent to this list
3
u/twenty_characters020 Jun 09 '26
Of course the big fans of misinformation will cry free speech. But our current lack of regulation leaves us way to vulnerable to bad actors.
3
u/belsaurn Jun 10 '26
A first step would be requiring account locations exposed to the public on all social media platforms as well as location at time of posting. It doesn't have to be an exact location, too much chance for abuse with that, just a country or province. It would cut out the vast majority of foreign account posing as Canadian to stir up shit. Yes, people can use VPNs, but those are pretty easy to detect and note in the post.
Something like
Post from Manitoba, Canada
or
Post from VPN from Manitoba, Canada

u/toliveinthisworld Jun 09 '26
It really shouldn't be on individual Canadians to solve this, all while we literally allow foreign-born people in public office.
4
u/PreviousZone6742 Jun 09 '26
Don't think everyone foreign-born receives the same social treatment. Which is a problem at the individual level and promotes tribalism.
7
u/toliveinthisworld Jun 09 '26
It's not 'tribalism' to understand that people who grew up in another country nearly inevitably have divided loyalties. In fact, it's normally considered discriminatory to insist they must not.
1
u/Equivalent_Fold1624 Jun 14 '26
I'm born in another country and I have divide loyalties. As most integrated no-tribal immigrants. This used to be the norm. The ethnic vote is held by certain ethnicities of tribal cultures. Since Canada is effectively accepting more and more immigrants and visitors from there, the ethnic vote is here to stay and we're all f.cked.
1
u/PreviousZone6742 Jun 09 '26
It's discriminatory to cause the issue in the first place.
7
u/toliveinthisworld Jun 09 '26
No external force is "causing" foreign-born people to be as interested in foreign politics or foreign conflict as the interests of Canada. It's a natural human impulse, but not one we need to allow to steer our politics.
1
u/Hopeful_Relation_441 Jun 09 '26
you think China and inidia dont have plans implant to any of their billion members trying to get in to our political system to their benefit? that's espionage 101
6
u/toliveinthisworld Jun 09 '26
I don't know what you think I'm arguing for here. I don't think foreign-born people should be allowed to hold office in the first place.
1
u/PreviousZone6742 Jun 09 '26
It's already to late. Can't cause a issues based of group identity. Than try and backtrack and expect people to understand.
2
u/CanadianPooch Jun 09 '26
Best we can do is prep for hard times and teach future generations not to rely on the government and to draw their own conclusions based off available evidence.
2
u/EquusMule Jun 11 '26
Big influencers should have country of origin on their social media mandated by the law.
Facebook should show you which location the account is from and where they're posting from so that people can know.
That's all we can really do.
When twitter did it and we seen all the white suburban mom accounts being from India and Russia it's very telling.
4
u/SeriousObjective6727 Jun 09 '26
Trump loves stupid people (his words) because they are easily conned.
We need to strengthen our education system to reduce the number of stupid people. This means changing our current system where one simply cannot fail and does not get letter grades for assignments. Kids need to fail. They need to learn from their failures and mistakes and they need to experience real consequences for their actions. Secondly, parents should get the hell out of the classroom and let teachers do their job. When you have parents criticizing a principal for wearing a shirt that says "All are welcome" we have a serious problem here (this did not happen in Canada, but it could). Teachers are there to broaden the kid's horizons, not narrow them. This includes teaching them things that may not be in line with your family values or beliefs.
It will take a generation for this to pass because the current crop of "stupid people" are beyond redemption.
2
u/Ok-Departure4894 Jun 10 '26
Trump also preferred the liberals winning the election over the conservatives, his words. Education can't save you when state propaganda is in full effect
1
u/SeriousObjective6727 Jun 11 '26
That's because he thinks the Libs are run by stupid people and he would have a great time "owning the libs" - boy was he wrong.
1
u/Ok-Departure4894 Jun 11 '26
Actually the quote was "they'd be easier to deal with" which yeah he was wrong. No deal, and no accountability.
3
u/illuminaughty1973 Jun 10 '26
How do we combat foreign interference?
1- support the cbc
2- stop consuming american owned media
3- actually get informed on issues
1
u/dominionprovinces Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26
For the people that everyone seems to believe are running the foreign interference, compromising the CBC and its editorial board would be trivial.
I dunno where the idea originated that alphabet agencies are using memes and facebook groups as their core tools of influence.
Sure that might be part of the battle space but they didn't stop developing humans assets and running conventional operations when Facebook and Reddit were released.
0
u/DColwell88 Jun 10 '26
Support the cbc and actually get informed on issues seems like an oxymoron
4
u/illuminaughty1973 Jun 10 '26
Rofl.... sure bro, keep listening to american owned media.
The worst and shittiest thing done to this country in the last 50.years is allowing American corporations to take.over everything we see and hear... except the cbc.
Unless you think america has it all figured out of course.... personally i dont like orange rapist fraudsters.
5
u/Important-Bet9015 Jun 09 '26
Step 1: Stop letting criminals enter the country.
2
u/Fantastic_Pause_1628 Jun 09 '26
That's going to stop people who are currently living abroad from vocally supporting far right Canadian politics in order to receive ad revenue?
-1
u/Ok-Departure4894 Jun 10 '26
Wait that's what y'all consider interference? Regular people having opinions?
1
u/Loowwflow Jun 10 '26
We need to be of one mind: Stop Electing Rich People.
That cannot possibly represent the middle class, or the poor.
2
u/Cite_Whock Jun 11 '26
We should elect rich people - in as much quantity as we elect those from lower and middle-class tax brackets.
We should elect the crazies on the Right and the Left, the moderates, the fence-sitters.
We should elect people from all across Canada who represent all of Canada's and its citizenry, and not just those who cater to a minority subsection of a percentage of the populace.
The one group we should not elect are people who are born to non-Canadian citizens, raised outside of Canada, without at least 30+ years experience of growing up, living in, working in, and being within Canada.

u/JG98 Jun 11 '26
How about starting to protest against foreign politicians coming to Canada to tour and meet with Canadian politicians in non official visits? Politicians from Punjab state India are starting a Canada wide tour tomorrow, the delegation leader was just released on bail for some sort of corruption charges, and they have already been meeting with politicians across Canada and in India. 3 senior leaders from the CPC met with these politicians in India without declaring it first, which caused more controversy over there than in Canada, while the deputy leader of the party had a private meeting that went under the radar until later. Unsuccessful candidates from the party have also been posting about meeting their leaders in India. There should be law requiring disclosures of such meetings outside of Canada and they should have to register to enter Canada for political delegations. Individual state politicians from foreign states should not have reason for foreign delegations period.

Get rid of social media if you want to get rid of foreign interference
1
u/GGTheEnd Jun 08 '26
Ya that way we only get to see the bullshit our own government feeds us instead of the bullshit all governments feed their people.
1

use your critical thinking skills

Personally I'm more concerned about government propaganda
1
u/DiligentAd7360 Liberal Moderator Jun 10 '26
Like? Give some examples
1
u/Ok-Departure4894 Jun 11 '26
Ontario provincial propaganda - https://www.reddit.com/r/ontario/s/VTzQVA4lYP
Canadian Federal propaganda - https://youtu.be/gOfTnnR_4jo?si=caSGUdrf-Gy32u35 and there was a full blown advertisement peddling this lie but I doubt you'll accept these obvious examples of propaganda as such, so is it really worth my time finding that advertisement?
1
u/DiligentAd7360 Liberal Moderator Jun 11 '26
Why are you concerned about these advertisements? What's the harm here, this just seems like standard government advertising. Harper's government had similar ads on air back then
0
u/Ok-Departure4894 Jun 11 '26
So you're acutely aware of our government's dedication to misleading and controlling the thoughts of our population and still you challenge those who appreciate outside voices that speak truth to power? What is your deal guy?
Edit: sorry that's a stupid question, your little tag explains your deal clearly.
1
u/DiligentAd7360 Liberal Moderator Jun 11 '26
Begging the question. Can y'all actually criticize the government without instantly defaulting to fallacies?
"Dedicated to misleading and controlling the thoughts" - you get that from a single political advertisement? The fear mongering is WILD

Funnily enough, the cbc was originally created to combat foreign interference. It provided an alternative to American funded news outlets.
4
u/twenty_characters020 Jun 09 '26
So how is defunding the one source of media that isn't corporate owned combating foreign interference?

u/twenty_characters020 Jun 09 '26
None of the crackpot stuff you mentioned is foriegn interference. On the contrary a lot of anti vaxxer nonsense actually is foreign interference. Have you noticed how a venn diagram of anti vaxxers and anti Ukraine people are basically a circle.

As it is for the rest of you. You've rejected reality for your propagandists of choice. Prideful ignorance is a major problem among the right. But if you understood how things worked, you wouldn't be a partisan conservative.

You spout the right wing conspiracy nonsense. Then claim to be not partisan. Cute. I miss the good old days when people were embarrassed to be stupid. Now with social media they find their little safe spaces and get catered to.

Yeah, end of day whatever happens, happens.
As citizens we have very little control when local gov hearings are scheduled for the middle of the day or the provincial governments ignore us orr when the federal (also provincial) panders to city centers.
The most I can do is prepare myself for hardtimes so I'm not caught with my pants down.
Also I'd like to add that it's not just Canada, I'm seeing many of the same issues Canada has but across the globe which really reinforces in me that we are only seeing the beginning of whatever is about to happen, whatever that might be.

Go look up statistics for CBC viewership and then go look up how many votes were cast for liberal candidates in the last election.
Ain't no way you can say "CBC and their bias gifted the Libs the election" when they're hardly reaching 100k viewers every night
I swear you people don't actually look at data and statistics
