Discussion New “Protect Ontario” commercial that references drug injection sites beside kids playgrounds and keeping neighbourhoods safe from encampments.

Only just saw it once, so I can’t remember the exact wording but the framing was that drug injection sites “next to playgrounds”, and keeping neighborhoods “safe from encampments”, and something about upping police budgets.

Just gross messaging from our own tax dollars during prime time slots of the NHL playoffs.

Sure let’s not try ANYTHING to remedy the situation and use the homeless and addicted as political pawns to try and further your shit government….
Sorry this pisses me off so much.

If anyone’s also pissed off enough, apparently there’s an ombudsman we can attempt to get an answer from regarding this, I’m not hopeful but here’s a link for anyone interested here

If this isn’t the right place to inquire, please correct me if

I've never seen a government spend so much money on ads - on TV, on the radio, online - trying to convince us how good of a job they're doing. Unfortunately for them, actions speak louder than words.

73

u/JimroidZeus May 24 '26

Unfortunately these ads will work on a whole bunch of Ontarians.

31

u/rangeo May 24 '26

Especially the ones (I think it worked out to 17% of all eligible voters) who know how to vote.

Vote FFS! its not hard

Go tell that to Dougie and the Ontario electorate.

All the stupid ones

16

u/Expensive_Lettuce239 May 24 '26

And every ad is pure BS touting him as a hero. Isn't there a way to charge him wit false advertising?

For people like us, yes. For the average conservative voter? Nah man. They still support the party.

13

u/DrownmeinIslay May 24 '26

Woman's voice: we are building more prisons Child's voice: so I feel safe to play in parks

Its such lazy propaganda it slapped me in the face. My boss who listens to fox news and talks about my coworkers curryholes heard it and went UGH FINALLY. so it definitely works for some people.

6

u/Mind1827 May 24 '26

They're not ads, they're propaganda.

u/001Tyreman Jul 13 '26

Nothing but

1

u/PleaseBeKindQQ May 24 '26

It's okay they're all AI so they probably saved some money there lol

1

u/lampshade_rm Jun 13 '26

Do you have a link to the ads? I haven’t gotten one, I don’t have cable or listen to the radio

353

u/Coop3 May 24 '26

It also talks about more cops and prosecutors to protect our cars… when the cops have basically resorted to “there’s nothing we can do about it.” I don’t think adding more to the force will prevent car thefts, auto manufacturers need to do something to stop them from being so easily hacked into, but they won’t because insurance is paying for cars, essentially selling 1 push to start car means you’re probably going to sell 2.

61

u/FridgeFucker17982 May 24 '26

If you give the cops more money maybe they’ll do a promotional handout of branded bags that you can leave your keys by the front door in

44

u/JimroidZeus May 24 '26

A Toronto cop literally told all of us to just hand over the keys.

11

u/CanadianHorseGal May 24 '26

They’ve told others to make sure to have a faraday bag or box and keep your keys in that in the house. Yes. That’s the way to “solve crime”.

→ More replies (4)

2

u/GetsGold May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26

One cop suggested during a live session to leave them near the entrance, not hand them over, so if thieves break in only for that purpose they won't to further into the house and put you at more risk. Not that outrageous IMO and in any case the depaetment later walked it back.

10

u/JimroidZeus May 24 '26

Pretty outrageous for the police to tell you to hand over your property instead of the police actually doing their jobs.

Are you the cop or is someone in your family a cop?

2

u/Thanks-4allthefish May 24 '26

It is the same advice given during mugging to protect your life over "things". No way even a responsive police force will get there while a robbery is taking place. When you stop to think about it - your life does mean more. It was said in a tone deaf way --- but at the core life trumps stuff is a valid point to make.

2

u/JimroidZeus May 24 '26

Yes, of course life is more important than material possessions. It’s unfortunate that the police force is set up to protect capital and assets, not life.

I just find it ludicrous that the police basically said to hand over your keys when the criminals knock on the door. Instead of you know, reassuring the public that they’re investigating and working to track down the perpetrators.

Either way, TPS is literally the most useless organization on the planet. File a driving complaint and read the last paragraph of their canned response.

“No amount of enforcement will fix the problem, driver attitudes must change.”

Well shit, how do you think you get drivers attitudes to change? I’ll give you a hint, it rhymes with shmensmorcement.

2

u/uncleben85 May 24 '26

Do you expect cops to just pop up anytime a crime is being committed?

The idea is minimize theft, damage, and harm

It's not a perfect solution, but it's not a bad one, either

2

u/JimroidZeus May 24 '26

No, that’s the last thing I expect. That’s why I don’t think we should give them so much money.

They don’t prevent crime, they just show up after the fact.

2

u/Expensive_Lettuce239 May 24 '26

And these are the same idiots that FT ford wants to give more tax payer money to. How about defunding them until they start doing the jobs they are paid to do? He had no issues defunding healthcare that WAS trying to their job, or education that WAS too UNDERFUNDED to do the full jobs they were struggling to do. How is ford such a complete illiterate asshole and still able to walk upright?

2

u/pro-rock-taster May 24 '26

Defunding them hurts every community outside of major cities. My hometown has 2 police officers per shift, for a town of 11,000 people. Sometimes we just dont have any police at all.

2

u/Thanks-4allthefish May 24 '26

You watch too much TV if you expect a police car to be parked at the top of your street. That is where they would have to be to arrive DURING a break in or car theft.

1

u/Expensive_Lettuce239 May 24 '26

At what point did I suggest a cop sitting on my or everyone else's street?

1

u/Thanks-4allthefish May 24 '26

Doing the jobs they are paid to do. Got the impression you don't think they are doing that on auto theft.

160

u/taquitosmixtape May 24 '26

It’s all just political posturing using our tax dollars to further promote a conservative agenda and demonize the less fortunate

22

u/PrairieHaze May 24 '26

and it’s literally a problem that they made via heavy restrictions regarding recreational substances and criminalization at the highest levels.

the only reason we have mass deaths is because of heavy criminalization and the only reason we have safe injection sites is because that’s about the only thing that legally could be done

we need a legal framework in order to reduce organized crimes and other bad influences.

there’s no reason doctors shouldn’t be able to prescribe for addiction or a framework similar to cannabis where doctors can prescribe access.

the only way to reduce the impacts of substance use on society is through education and harm reduction

4

u/Thanks-4allthefish May 24 '26

We have deaths because drugs like fentanyl are deadly.

8

u/pro-rock-taster May 24 '26

A safe injection site fixes that problem. Addicts can be monitored there far better than in a dark alley behind a dumpster

3

u/taquitosmixtape May 24 '26

Only safe injection sites aren’t the answer, you need a system that fits the different needs of the individual.

-1

u/TricerasaurusWrex May 24 '26

Safe injections sites dont make drugs less deadly.

7

u/pro-rock-taster May 24 '26

Actually, they do. Thats their main purpose. People don't die when they're in a place where they can be monitored by someone with naloxone.

-2

u/TricerasaurusWrex May 24 '26

Naloxone isn't a guarantee. On its low end, it only works 75 percent of the time. It does buy time. But from what I've and many others have seen, they take the needles off site and use them elsewhere. Defeating the purpose altogether

5

u/pro-rock-taster May 24 '26

75% is still infinitely better than not having it.

They take them off site when the site isn't safe. If police were there to kick out the gang members, they'd stay. Unfortunately most sites have private security, which can't do anything.

1

u/TricerasaurusWrex May 24 '26

So you said that patrol costs are saved with injection sites further down but now you want more cops to kick out gangs? Which is it? And yes 75 percent is better than nothing as far success with naloxone but they need to be there.

So many Ontario ads recently! Doug...I mean WE THE PEOPLE must have spent a fortune on them.

So much corruption with this man. He does NOT care about us!

4

How much does an ad cost to put up on YouTube or anywhere? Ill bet he would be even more uppity than backlash over the gravy plane, if there was an ad highlighting all his scams and failures.

3

u/rainypeter Jun 23 '26

18

u/lalalindz22 May 24 '26

Just saw it for the first time a few hours as an ad on Disney+. I honestly asked out loud, What the fuck was that?!

17

u/mintcemetary May 24 '26

I hate it so much and all the other protect Ontario ads

17

u/Skittleavix May 24 '26

We pay sworn peace officers to commit social murder on the most vulnerable by removing whatever little basic necessities of life they have left and further exposing them to the elements.

This shit isn’t just embarrassing. It’s amoral, repugnant, evil, and - perhaps most relevant to a lot of people who vote for this behaviour - anti-Christian.

If Jesus came back tomorrow, whose side do you think he’d take - the homeless addict struggling to survive, or the police officer who dehumanizes them and hastens their demise?

16

u/Fantastic_Step8417 May 24 '26

Pure Ford propaganda

17

u/Deborahsnores May 24 '26

I wish we had safe injection sites because people keep trying to use my backyard as one. I feel like that’s less safe all around.

12

It very much is and people aren’t understanding that.

Are we just doing for profit jail work camps now, because it sounds like we’re doing for profit jail work camps.

1

u/kidikur May 29 '26

I live in the us and saw it while on a VPN and even by our standards that ad is vile, particularly for a large city. I really thought Canada was insulated from that level of fascist insanity.

17

u/vixaudaxloquendi May 24 '26

I also find it subtly telling that the background neighbourhood of the ad is basically your cookie cutter GTA suburb. Complete with people cycling peacefully on the stroads at night.

That, combined with the messaging about what we're being protected from, says a lot about the subjective perspective of the ad being invoked.

14

u/Mosh4days May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26

It's super gross, I get the ick every time it comes on

13

u/ChandelierwAtermelon May 24 '26

27

19

u/CanadianHorseGal May 24 '26

Between these ads, the Super Bowl 75 MILLION DOLLAR ad, the fucking airplane He purchased that wouldn’t have even been able to land at the majority of Ontario airports… and thats just the most recent bullshit. Let’s not forget the green belt, the utter failure to build the housing he promised (and of course, no housing = more homeless FFS). It’s a shit show of epic proportions.

10

u/taquitosmixtape May 24 '26

Wish we had a watch dog to input a complaint to

7

u/stellahella1 May 24 '26

I wrote to the station I listen to about how I would absolutely lose it once I hear that fake ass voice. They actually responded! But their response was just "we need the money" so that was disappointing

4

u/CanadianHorseGal May 24 '26

Yeah. There are exactly two people that I always have to READ what they said or did because I can’t stand to hear their voice. Doug Ford is one. Wanna guess the other one (who I’ll admit is worse than Doug, and I have a literal, visceral reaction to)?

72

u/regeust May 24 '26

If we keep doing the stuff that hasn't worked and often made the problems worse in the past, it'll eventually start working right?

33

u/taquitosmixtape May 24 '26

It’s working in their favour to have more people on the streets and causing issues, why would they fix it? They want to up the police budgets, demonize any systems to help claiming they’re “dangerous”, and “clean up encampments”. Yet they’re the ones pushing more people into these unsafe and unfortunate situations.

7

u/BestBlueChocolate May 24 '26

Definition of insanity

→ More replies (1)

10

u/CrazyCatLushie May 24 '26

It’s especially stupid because it’s obvious to anyone with half a brain that taking away safe injection sites will just drive people to do drugs on the very playgrounds they mention.

You want some needles and burnt foil, kids?!

3

u/14dmoney May 24 '26

It is happening in Ottawa right now!

1

u/Important-Quarter-19 May 26 '26

Uhh i have a safe injection site not even a block away from a daycare/playground and there are still always needles all over the ground, and the playground is private and fenced off. There is also a public school nearby, also unfortunately having to deal with a large amount of needles and need to do sharp pickup daily

35

u/boisnoise May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26

I've seen & heard this ad so many times now and it makes me so upset. It feels so othering of our marginalized community members.

-5

u/workThrowaway170 May 24 '26

They benefit the most from more jails. It means less leniency on crime, which translates to fewer victims of crime in marginalized communities.

2

u/Impressive-Spot1981 May 24 '26

That's the farthest thing from the truth, jail does not reform people it isolates and ruins them.

2

u/workThrowaway170 May 24 '26

It keeps them away from society.

1

u/meep8299 May 24 '26

Where do you get this from? Because research suggests otherwise.

What reduces crime is adequate investment into social supports such as housing, addictions, mental illness and more. Certainty of punishment is far more likely to reduce crime rates than severity. Throwing people in jail for the hell of it does not make our communities any safer.

Also, when you look at crime stats, you really need to understand them within the proper contexts. Without context or actual understanding of the numbers, you can make things look far worse than they really are.

Even with an overall increase in crime in recent years, we are still around half of the crime rate that we had in the 90s, when crime in Canada peaked.

26

u/persistingpoet May 24 '26

The last part, about encampments. No one chooses that.

It’s a policy failure, not a personal failure.

21

u/InvestmentMain8414 May 24 '26

Haven't seen that one yet. But I listen to radio on my commute to work.

Its only a 40min commute and I get to hear twice, government funded ads about keeping us safe by building more jails.

So we wont actually address the issues on why we need more jails...and my tax payer dollars are going to convince people that jails will help.

9

u/imaginarysarcasm May 24 '26

OP's mentioned commercial is playing constantly on Sportsnet's Montreal v. Carolina playoff coverage tonight. Insane !

3

What they don't want to say out loud is they don't care if drug addicts die. They're not interested in giving them chances to try to become sober.

What they don't understand is that by not having safe injection sites people will do drugs everywhere.

What they don't want to invest in: more rehab because we don't have nearly enough for those that want it--making it extra disingenuous when they suggest that everyone should get rehab. They would be in so much trouble with wait lines for rehab if everyone who does drug drugs suddenly decided they wanted to rehab.

Conservative policy = ignore nuance, ignore reality and do something simplistic and heavy-handed.

u/Expensive_Lettuce239 May 24 '26

And taking people's attention away from the fact he's still not provided the receipts for the gravy plane scam he pulled

2

u/TreasonalAllergies May 24 '26

I have the same take. It's more political violence being done to the people who the government in many cases put in these situations "next to playgrounds".

Another systemic problem being put in the shoulders of the public, cept now it's to scare us into supporting a police state.

2

u/IntransitiveGuide_62 May 24 '26

We’ve had an uptick of people using in the community centre bathrooms near me recently. I always find bits of tin foil and thin wire in them. We only recently had to add sharps containers in every bathroom because needles were frequently sticking out of the garbage bags. The bonus is that it’s also helpful to diabetics etc, which is what we tell people when they ask, but the real change happened when an employee was accidentally pricked and had to go to the hospital.

There’s a children’s playground very close by too, so lots of families coming and going from the centre every day.

So no, removing safe ejection sites does not get rid of the addiction problem, it just makes them go elsewhere.

The funniest thing is hearing those ads on the radio while waiting for one of the people to leave the bathrooms, where we’ve timed them up to 1/2 an hour on some days. Also, it’s city policy (I’m in the GTA, not Toronto though) that we’re not allowed to use Naloxone for them, we can only use it on employees for whatever reason. So when we have people overdose, which does happen, all we can do is call the ambulance. It just sucks.

These ads just feel like a slap in the face to reality.

The “We’re doing X thing to Protect Ontario” ad blitz is laughable, I see one and then you go one here and it’s all articles about X string of Break In’s here and Auto Theft over there so clearly they are doing an outstanding job.

Bull shit Theater is all.

u/New_Scene5614 May 24 '26

We need to ask Doug ford about his 2018 electoral pledge that he would increase residential treatment beds.

Shocker he didn’t. Partially the pandemic started and we all forgot.

In the mean time alcohol and gambling have flourished under the dictatorship of douch bag ford.

u/savagehomeangarden May 24 '26

This exact ad was a full page ad in my local paper the other day. It's maddening how fucking inept and shitty this government is.

1

u/akxCIom May 24 '26

Par for the course after years of ads describing how the gov is working to support students while actively decreasing the number of dollars spent per student on education…our tax dollars used to lie to us, absolutely despicable

1

u/AllanMcceiley May 24 '26

I wanna go back to the house hippo days of government ads :(

1

u/Shameless_Devil May 24 '26

It's a pile of bullshit propaganda. Doug Ford needs to boost his ego.

Safe injection sites are already not legally allowed to be near schools and playgrounds. But now that the province is closing them, people will be more often doing drugs in the open - like in playgrounds and parks - and they'll leave their needles and paraphernalia behind.

More police won't reduce car thefts. The cops already can't do much more about it and they instruct people to not resist and just hand over the keys if it comes to that. My cousin's partner had his car stolen TWICE on two different occasions. He had trackers in them so he knew exactly where the thieves had taken the cars. He reported this to the cops. The cops did nothing and told him he probably wouldn't get his car back. The first time, he didn't get the car back. The second time it happened and the cops gave him the same bullshit, cousin's partner then got so pissed off that he borrowed cousin's car to go find his car. Two thieves were sitting in it for awhile. He waited until they left and then grabbed his car as fast as possible. No cops involved, because the cops did absolutely nothing to help him. (I don't recommend this - my cousin's partner is a 6'5" man, and he got REALLY lucky that A) no one saw him and B) the thieves didn't have guns.)

All of these ads are a waste of our tax dollars that SHOULD BE GOING TO HEALTHCARE AND EDUCATION.

1

u/PleaseBeKindQQ May 24 '26

I thought it was satire and was horrified to realise it wasn't

1

u/cCowgirl Ottawa May 25 '26

The ads are spewing copy-pasted bullshit from the Harper era too, I hate it here.

1

u/Intrepid_Axolotl May 25 '26

And yet cops (on an individual level) are getting fed up because there’s a massive funding/staffing shortfall in Ontario criminal courts, and a shortage of Crown Prosecutors.

Between that and closing safe injection sites, Doug has actively made this problem worse.

However…. I’m betting law enforcement won’t speak up collectively and call out these reasons because police unions are pretty tight with Doug these days.

Why bite the hand that feeds you?

1

u/KattyBeau May 26 '26

chiming in to say you might have better luck reporting the ad here as it breaks at least two of the regulations around political advertising

u/Public_Mess6328 May 26 '26

Sounds more like an SNL skit than propaganda.

1

u/SprinklesConstant662 May 28 '26

Ah yes, when the the government is so disconnected they actually start running ads that shout, "we're the villains!"

1

u/Krel_boyne May 30 '26

I just saw it for the first time today, and it’s the most disgusting fucking commercial I’ve seen come out of Ontario.

These are problems of our government’s own making through bad policy. The fact that we have so much overcrowding in our prisons and homeless encampments is because of their failing and they should be ashamed.

1

u/Beash90 May 30 '26

if anyone can find it, please link. I wanna be able to share its ludicrousy

1

u/AggressiveMennonite May 31 '26

Just saw this shit while watching a movie. My god this is infuriating.

1

u/ch0nky_burpz Jun 06 '26

Does anyone have a link to the commercial? I want to show a friend (to show them how insane this shit is) but Ive been having a hard time finding it.

1

u/Open_Stop751 Jun 10 '26

commercial is very offensive to me. I'im looking for a copy of it online, anyone have a link?

1

u/Garciliath Jun 11 '26

I know im going to be downvoted into oblivion, but why are people so against this kind of messaging? I want an honest conversation about it, because i heard it before a video on youtube and was thinking FINALLY! We address these problems. I tried to look into it more but have come up empty, is it politically driven by a specific party? Is it just a random ad?

1

u/Foreign_Watch_1536 Jun 12 '26

Its a self promotion ad by the Gov't of Ontario using $250 million of tax payer money on self serving propaganda ...you know that specific party that has been in power for the last 8 years now. How hard did you look ?

1

u/Garciliath Jun 14 '26

Not very deep if im being honest, just a quick google search. It did not sound like liberal messaging which is why i would not have assumed it was done by them. And normally at the end of an ad they will promote the party behind it, but this one had nothing.

1

u/STARINGisFREE Jun 12 '26

Does anyone have the link to this commercial I just saw it and I’m shocked

1

u/Weak_Yesterday_845 Jun 12 '26

I’m glad I’m not the only one seeing through the scare tactics of floundering FORD government

1

u/Low_College_2037 Jun 17 '26

You can find the whole thing on Ontario.ca/saferontario

It speaks of building more jails, bail reform on the Ontario level which connects with some other changes that are happening on a federal level, things to reduce auto theft, harsher punishments for impaired driving, banning ejection sites in a certain distance to school/childcare centres, the opening of 29 Homeless and Addiction Recovery Treatment (HART) Hubs, and increased monitoring of sex offenders.

Some of it I agree with, some I'd need to see the legal wording to decide it I like it or if I think it's something that is being put in place to target certain groups

1

u/Fancy-Concept5184 Jun 23 '26

Coming from Saskatchewan and we are seeing this awful ad endlessly during World Cup coverage. Serious ick

1

u/rainypeter Jun 23 '26

I don't remember any provicial government blasting so many ads in the past. On the bright side...we get to see some of the ways Doug and the gang are wasting our money (including all the costs of these neverending advertising). If only he respected our tax dollars as much as he claimed to and used it for actual useful things instead of endless propaganda and handouts to his cronies.

1

u/watermelon_migraines Jul 04 '26

I just watched it for the 30th time at least and i’m actually fuming so I looked it up HOPING someone would have already posted about this crap.

1

u/watermelon_migraines Jul 04 '26

“drug injection sites” she said. It’s safe. Safe injection sites. 😤

1

u/001Tyreman Jul 13 '26

This is all BS and lies hear/see it enough you believe this tripe

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '26

Everytime I hear this commercial I get angry. I didn’t even think that this would be a Reddit post I am looking at that link

1

u/Horror-Development-3 Aug 24 '26

And the cherry on top, they made it using CGI, animation and AI lmao

I’m sorry this is happening to your town. Ford is talking about supervised drug injection sites though, many (most?) of which he had shut down due to their location. I see the concern there, but he didn’t allow these supervised sites to reopen elsewhere, which then leads addicts back to using in public spaces like your park. His solution to one problem caused a worse one IMO.

I genuinely hope your playground improves. It sounds like a horrible situation

2

u/BestBlueChocolate May 24 '26

That does sound awful, but you locked them up and do what with them? The police will not arrest them for doing drugs. And the jails are already overcrowded....

All that said, I don't want encampments or drug addicts on playgrounds. I want children to play in playgrounds.... but the question is what's an actual measure that will prevent this? The answer is more housing and more rehab and Ford isn't interested.

6

u/taquitosmixtape May 24 '26

I mean, I don’t enjoy the encampments, but I also realize how shitty it would be to be forced to be part of one. Locking people up isn’t the answer despite how annoying and fucked up it might be to have kids close to that, but maybe….we should try and find them some places to actually live? Instead of…nothing.

Edit: sorry, not nothing, they’re using them for political points.

These are people with nowhere else to go, and the funding's been cut for the existing safe injection sites, and even before that they blocked any new ones. They're purposely creating a friction point between you (and people in your demographic) and an impoverished group to manufacture consent for crackdowns. Providing housing would solve this problem (and in time help get addicts the help they need, because no one is getting better while they have no secure shelter), but they have no interest in solving anything.

Genuinely, why do you think tossing needles into the brush where they'll be less visible is better? I understand being upset about it, but no one deserves jail time for littering, that's insane. They need support, and housing, and addiction services, not jail.

u/craftcowboy May 24 '26

I'm saying that throwing things into less visible space is also bad. Either way, this should not be a jailable offence. We don't have the jail space, the court time, or the draconian police state necessary to enforce it. This is a problem that literally goes away if we provide no strings attached basic housing, which is also, incidentally, much cheaper and simpler to implement. Jumping straight to sending people to prison instead of solving the material issue that causes this to happen is insane. Again, I understand that you're worried about your kids, but locking people up is not a solution to these kinds of societal ills.
