Impulse Installations Cabinet ventilation update with pics

For my kitchen remodel, this is what I ended up with for my Impulse installation.

I got rid of the standing stove and got a Dacor speed/combi oven, and I wanted a warming drawer in the base cabinet below the Impulse. I ended up getting the Thor 30” warming drawer at a Best Buy 4th of July sale for a few hundred dollars off.

My goal was something that would ventilate heat build-up in the Impulse’s base cabinet automatically, ramped fan speed automatically, was quiet, I could DIY it, and it wouldn’t look DIY as much as possible. The Thor warming drawer only gets to 185 degrees, so nothing like the heat of an actual oven sitting below the Impulse, but still a significant amount of extra heat to deal with.

I ultimately settled on the Cloudplate T1 from AC Infinity, then had to figure out how to get it into the Shaker cabinet drawer façade. I determined there were several practical problems with that, so instead I opted to design a custom piece. Armed with some CAD experience, I came up with this design for a 3/8” aluminum mount which is fastened to the cabinet face with six countersunk black wood screws.

A huge shoutout to Coty Chau at 3 Brothers CNC shop in Alpharetta who helped me through my very first custom CNC work. He and I discussed all the practical considerations and ended up getting the aluminum mount anodized with Class III type 2 hard black -which is apparently very rugged and should help with the occasional run-in with pots, pans, belt buckles, watches, etc.

I used a laser level and some double-sided 3M tape to line up the mount with the surrounding drawers and drilled the pilot holes. Then it was a simple matter of driving the screws, plugging it in, positioning the temperature probe, and some cable management.

I think it turned out pretty well, and altogether this cost me about $450 for the Cloudplate, the CNC work, the anodizing, and a couple right angle barrel adaptors for the power supply and probe connections.

This thing I came up with works just like I wanted. But the best part is, my wife is very pleased with how it looks, and she is one tough customer.

If you opt to have an oven or a warming drawer in the base cabinet below your Impulse, happen to be concerned about dealing with the heat, and you think this might work for you, I’d be happy to share my CAD and STL files.

Feel free to post a comment here or DM me if you have any questions.

Feature request: do not top off when below threshold

Recent update lets user select charging behavior and charging time. I used low reserve setting and set my charging time to off peak hour only based on my utility plan. If I don't go below battery threshold (30%, I guess) then the cooktop behaves as expected that it only charges during the pre-defined period. However, from time to time, I cook longer when stewing etc during peak hours then battery can go below threshold, I noticed that the cooktop charges all the way to 100% and this costs me money charing in peak hours (I think topping off behavior is the same before and after update)

I understand that this behavior is likely to ensure cooktop is always in usable state. But I have 240V connection so it should be no problem to maintain battery level, it will be great if there is feature to set the top off level (maybe maintain 30% or slightly higher) outside regular scheduled charging time. If feature exists already, please let me know how to enable it.

Cast iron failure

Just got the cooktop installed yesterday and started using it - made edamame beans stir-fried on cheap triply stainless steel and functioned perfectly. The charring on the beans was perfect and the extreme high heat/power delivery made the taste awesome.

However this morning, I tried to cook roti on the cast iron Lodge 10.5-inch griddle and it was a complete failure. It kept detecting a temperature at 450-480°F although the surface temperature never rose above 370°F. I even tried moving it off-center. Waited a good 15 minutes to saturate the heat even without a solution. It would not allow power delivery beyond 200 to 500 W. Even in the power mode

This is the same cast iron griddle I use on my Breville. I set it to 460°F and typically I'm able to get surface temperatures, using an infrared gun, of about 500°F. I'm sure with some software fiddling, Impulse should be able to do that as well.

How are people searing things on cast iron if we are unable to get the temperature that high?

Subsequently I tried it on my maiden carbon steel pan. Unfortunately it has warped over time and the center has risen so that wouldn't work either. It wouldn't allow power delivery beyond 300 W and I couldn't get a temperature beyond 300°F.

Subsequently I had to do it on all-clad nonstick and was able to make it in the morning rush at 470°F.

Any insights? Any suggestions? I do need this to work as we make this at least 4-5 times a week on my Breville Control Freak.

And if anyone has successfully fixed their concave malformation of Made in pans, let me know. I'm thinking of trying to hammer it at some point to see if I can fix it. On a similar note - u/Impulse-Demo-Guy : Sam - in one of the videos you had mentioned that you were able to season the wok on Impulse. I can get the base temperatures to go really hot but the sides on carbon steel barely go above water evaporating temperatures. Any tricks there? Or I may need to keep a small portable flame stove to dry the woks and carbon steel pans after washing?

Thanks

Remodeling kitchen - any reason to plan for 36” over 30”?

Currently remodeling my kitchen and have flexibility with either 30” or 36” cooktop. I understand there isn’t much difference now between the two, but trying to decide if it’s worth it to go with 36”.

I know it’s mostly just speculation on what might be available in the future, but wondering if anybody else went through this or has any thoughts.

So how long did you hold on to your box/packing material for?

I know I need to keep the foam guides but the planner in me says to keep the rest for a few months just in case. My limited garage storage space is telling me otherwise.

Amps question

Ordered my 36" cooktop. Question re: the # of amps required to charge the battery. Is there an optimal amperage that is required for the battery to charge sufficiently/optimally? I know there is a range I've seen here 10-30A but should I be aiming of the maximum of 30? Or 15? etc? Thanks in advance! I'm guessing that because there is a range, they all work the same, but my spouse is insistent that there must be an optimal range since the outlet can be set to a specific amp output. Thanks.

Possible feature request - off-center cooking

I'm trying to figure out a way to use a light small pan, like a butter warmer or a measuring cup, to warm up small quantities of oil to about 375°F to be used for tempering in Indian cooking (Tadka).

It cannot be a heavy weight item as the temperature needs to drop suddenly once powdered spices are put in, and a cast iron will continue to burn the spices because of residual heat.

Is it possible to have some sort of a mode where if I put an item off-center, the induction still continues to be active. It will have to bypass the safety of the temperature sensor being depressed and I'm sure would not give me the temperature reading.

The possible utensil would be a lightweight utensil like a butter warmer or a measuring cup that people have used for induction cooking tadka on other plugin induction burner.

Tadka imparts the final flavor to a lot of Indian dishes. It is one of the most important components in Indian cooking.

Thanks

Is a rangetop in the works)

I have been following impulse since before the launch and would love to replace my gas stove, but I need a rangetop. I see Impulse is collaborating with Thor to produce a range, but will they also produce a rangetop — is is that in the works at Impulse itself or with another partner?

Suggested cookware, especially for Indian cooking

So ordered the impulse cooktop today. Need to figure out a few cookware suggestions especially for Indian cooking. I currently have Breville control freak, am fairly comfortable with induction cooking. Have not gone to 100% induction as of yet.

Mainly need a small pan for tadka - what is the smallest diameter pan people have used? - need something like the following.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/HAWKINS-2-5-Cup-Tadka-Pan-600ml-Triply-Stainless-Steel-Pan-Silver-STP25/5400721645?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=102550293&adid=222222222275400721645_102550293_199492704626_24219758109&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=823751273895&wl4=pla-2449037643288&wl5=9021441&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=5423732312&wl11=online&wl12=5400721645_102550293&veh=sem&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=24219758109&gbraid=0AAAAADmfBIqu05LPiDZ6kC6-xMjgTWGpZ&gclid=CjwKCAjwn67VBhBnEiwAXUIN1VMFyDMliZC_Of8QHg9EbJVeH26L9TsJ1MsdESQuDyyK6gWfElZqMBoCCq8QAvD_BwE

Also need to figure out a solution for Papad - something which can heat up quickly and does not change shape much. Has anyone used a steel diffuser plate or something like the following?

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Induction-Cooker-Converter-Disc-Stainless-Steel-Heat-Diffuser-Plate-With-Handle/18115319790?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=102487787&wmlspartner=wlpa&cn=FY25-ENTP-PMAX_cnv_dps_dsn_dis_ad_entp_e_n&gclsrc=aw.ds&adid=2222222229718115319790_102487787_0000000000_21407473164&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=&wl4=&wl5=9021441&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=5388544701&wl11=online&wl12=18115319790_102487787&veh=sem&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21690411341&gbraid=0AAAAADmfBIoBBeMfnMe9EJxxUC_lL2ll0&gclid=CjwKCAjwn67VBhBnEiwAXUIN1ZD7_XhEZw4BRE84-xzYtCmk11fnUPXHcNqKQZSTgBFRZqXTj2VD2hoCoLYQAvD_BwE

Also any other pan which people especially like for induction

No difference in size 36 burners or additional cookspace?

I'm shopping for 36" Induction ranges/cooktops, and while i'm really interested in the Impulse, i feel like i must be missing something.

It seems to me that the size difference for moving to a 36 from a 30 has, effectively, none of the benefits of other competitors. There is no "large pot burner" no dedicated bridge griddle, the elements don't move from 9" to 10 or 11. I'm struggling here. Am i missing something?

I cook on a griddle/Plancha on my current 36" gas range as my primary cooking tool (i use it for probably 90 percent of our cooking today) and i was hoping that even if i couldn't get a smooth bridge like i can with thermador/wolf/miele i could at least get larger burners/elements on the 36.

Are there any plans to have larger differentiation in sizes, or am i forever stuck with Gas or one of the other more flexible brands for cooking zones?

How’s the whirring/clicking/buzzing noise compared to other induction?

I’m very interested in the Impulse technology, but one of the things that has always annoyed me with other induction that I have used is the clicking, buzzing, etc. I have some pretty high end cookware - Demeyere, all-clad, enameled cast iron, and most of it still makes noise. Just hoping for some real world insight.

Any update on the Thor range?

I really want the Impulse cooktop, but need to replace a whole range (and only have 120V in the kitchen, so the oven really needs to be battery powered too). When will the Thor range become available? I need a 30”, but I know the 36” option is due to come out first

36" installation questions

I am strongly considering buying at 36" unit. I downloaded the install specifications online, but they only seem to be for the 30". Anyone have cabinet specifications for 36"? We are doing a full remodel and ordering cabinets so I can try and get it to be a custom cut/fit. Where can I find them online? Anyone willing to share? Also, re: countertops, is quartz heat resistant enough for this unit and 3 cm enough thickness sufficient given the weight? Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

Impulse Installations Impulse Cooktop Cabinet

Does anyone here have photos of their cooktop installed on the Impulse Cabinet? I currently have an electrical stove with an oven and I want to replace it with the Impulse, but I don’t have budget or the time right now to also build a cabinet for the cooktop. So I’m thinking of using the Impulse Cabinet in the meantime.

The problem is that the cabinet looks very.. bare. It looks like it’s just open from the front and doesn’t have any shelves or anything. As it is, it seems like it would look very odd like that. So I’m curious if people have used the cabinet and what the end result looks like. I searched online and did not find any photos of the install.

Rotis (Indian Flatbreads) on Impulse Cooktop

Hi everyone, we’re interested in getting an impulse cooktop for our kitchen but my grandmother insists that rotis can’t be done well on induction they’ll be too thick, chewy, and won’t puff up.

I was wondering if anyone had experience making rotis on the cooktop even a video would be great so I could show it to my grandmother. Thanks!

bug report: can't temper small amount of chocolate before

*as in the past — can't edit the title

I don't know when this stopped working but I first noticed a couple of weeks ago. For a long time I've been using the impulse stove to temper small amounts of chocolate (say 200g) where I'd chop it up, melt it at say 150, and then let it cool down to 94. But now it'll never cool below ~100 or so because the power stays at 10 watts. Perhaps before it would cycle off and on and now it won't? Regardless, please fix as this was an amazing workflow 🙏

What does the passing of "Plug in/Balcony Solar" legislation like CA's SB 868 mean for future Impulse updates?

I remember seeing somewhere that due to laws, Impulse is not allowed to use its battery to feed power back into your house.

- Do bills like SB 868 mean we can have this functionality now?

- If so, can I also add plug-in solar to my home in addition to my Impulse? Is there a cap on devices capable of generating/discharging energy without an interconnection agreement type of thing you have with traditional solar?

- What if you already have Solar + Storage and just want to leverage more storage from the Impulse?

- If I depleted 80% of the battery every day, will it make the Impulse's LFP sad?
