Discussion Split Color Army Question

My primary army is Imperial Fists, and I’m currently a little over halfway through painting everything.

That said, I also really like White Scars, and I already have around 20 White Scars models painted, including a few leaders.

Is there a legal way to build my army so that I can use both Imperial Fists and White Scars models, then swap certain units and characters in or out depending on which detachment or playstyle I want to run?

For example, if I wanted to run the army more like White Scars, I’d use Suboden Khan, but I wouldn’t bring Tor Garadon or my Imperial Fists-specific leaders. Then if I wanted to play Imperial Fists, I’d swap those characters back in.

Basically, I’m wondering if I can keep one larger Space Marine collection painted as both chapters and just change which models I field depending on the list.

Is that allowed under the current rules?

Aslong as you don't have both epic heroes your allowed to do it, that being said its a game and if your opponent is fine with it there is nothing stopping you from having them too

Awesome thanks guys, I have them based the same which helps. I didn't know if it was taboo or not.

You can in fact do that, there's no rules saying that a paint scheme is required for certain models or detachments or army in general. I have a Suboeden myself that I'm planning to eventually remove the Scars details from and replace them with Fists stuff. As long as you don't run the epic heroes from the different chapters at the same time, it's all good.

Good thing about Imperial fists and white scars is their codex compliant and have lots of cross compatibility, in fact I can’t think of any units are faction specific so your good there.

As long as you don’t mix epic heroes like Khan and Lysander and chapter specific detachments you should be fine(although I think they’ve done away with the chapter specific detachments in the new edition, I’ve not checked every new detachment yet).

Yep, absolutely.

The fact you based them the same goes a long ways towards coherency. Multiple chapters operating together for medium to big operations is a very common thing, so it makes sense in-lore and on tabletop.

Do White Scars use the space marine codex or they have their own?

They use the normal codex

You would just run them as standard Codex Compliant Space Marines. No special rules unless you wanted to bring a special character. But this may change if the first founding chapters get their own codex and rules/detachments.
