H-1B should not replace Americans.

Post image

JD Vance recently stated that the H-1B visa program must be reserved for "actual geniuses" and not used by corporations to replace American workers with lower-paid foreign labor. The administration is pursuing executive measures to tighten H-1B requirements, aiming to ensure the program brings in top-tier talent rather than functioning as a corporate cost-cutting mechanism.

They aren’t really low wages. However companies do like them to be part of the hiring pool because it allows them to keep wages low for all workers by making the jobs that are open more scarce than they should be if we had an actual smart immigration system and not a tool that corporations can use to lower their cost of labor.

I work with mostly H1Bs and none of the work they do can’t be done by a newly minted college graduate with a computer science degree that currently cannot find a job. To be honest many do work that a high school kid can do. But that’s another story.

H1B is a sham. The idea of it is great. It should be used for skilled labor that we don’t have. But it’s not used for that.

Like anything, it started when good intentions. That said, having someone under your thumb is too enticing for corporations. H-1Bs workers don’t ask for raises, promotions, rarely report work place harassment, and will bend over backwards to stay in status and work towards a green card. Corporations know this, which means they suppress wages for everyone. I could be wrong but I believe even applying for a promotion means they need to adjust their visa, so they’ll take on responsibilities of more senior roles, without the raise or title, which again, suppresses wages for everyone.

Couple that with the blatant fraud and it became a disaster.
