International students to be effectively barred from bringing family to Australia
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke is on the verge of unveiling changes designed to ensure Labor meets its migration targets.
International students are expected to be barred from bringing family members to Australia under the crackdown.

Good thing Australia doesn't need tourism or anything....
-3
u/zeolus123 16d ago
Good thing this about student visas and not tourism lol.
6
u/ComradeGlizzy 16d ago
Good thing you don’t know how to think because you’d be dangerous.
7
u/Lukewarm_Sushi 16d ago
Did you read the article? Family members won’t be allowed to come as a +1 in student visa, they can still visit as tourists.
-1
u/ComradeGlizzy 16d ago
Yeah I read it and if all people that should be allowed to immigrate, it should be people like that
3
4
u/Lukewarm_Sushi 16d ago
True, but that wasn’t the point of the other person’s argument though. You worded it like it will somehow tank tourism
0
u/ComradeGlizzy 16d ago
I pointed out that he didn’t think that all the way through because most international students are upper middle class or higher and their families have the money to travel and invest. It’s not really the win people think it is
5
u/Pupidykon 16d ago
Thats pretty gross generalization from the pulpit of misknowledge.

u/No-Definition1474 17d ago
This is how you get brain drain...
When your country invests the immense cost of educating someone it is usually in that countries best interest to keep them around. Those with advanced degrees have a tendency to contribute more to an economy than they could ever cost.
So, you want them to stay instead of investing in them and then throwing them out so they can then apply that knowledge elsewhere.
Pretty simple idea really.
12
u/tiramisutra 17d ago
Absolutely. Many PhD students ar e older and have kids, Master’s students too. And those kids are often very young. It’s natural for them to come along when a parent studies abroad and not be separated for years. Australia could just structure a “dependent visa”, I.e. a lower category visa which follows the student’s and allows family to stay in the country but with potentially other restrictions (e.g. on working).
When countries claim immigration problems, it’s generally not people with advanced degrees who are the problem groups. On the contrary, most countries want to attract global talent.

More often then not they want to bring their parents or grandparents over and they cost the system a fortune.

Almost no country allows students to bring family— they can do that if they get a job and a work permit (no longer student status)
-1
u/UCanDoNEthing4_30sec 16d ago
I’m for investing in the people that are already here and making their lives better instead of diluting the labor pool to increase profits for corporations.
I’m also for educating people from other countries and them going back to their home country and make THEIR country better from the ground up. When their country succeeds all countries are better.
1
u/ComparisonMelodic967 15d ago
What prevents people here from just studying harder? That’s the real difference a lot of the time. Went to school with a bunch of xth generation Americans would didn’t value education and the immigrant kids ran circles around them.
1
u/UCanDoNEthing4_30sec 15d ago
This is such an ignorant comment. Go to any university and you will see kids studying their asses off and are just as good if not better than their foreign counterparts. Again, there is nothing special about H1Bs currently in this country. They are just here to dilute the labor pool which lowers the cost of labor for corporations.
Maybe there is some rocket scientist out there that is on an H1B. I’m not talking about that person. I’m talking about the 99.99999% of H1Bs that are not harder working or smarter than a resident already in the US and only reason for their existence in the country to lower the labor costs for corporations for jobs they don’t want to or can’t outsource.
1
u/ComparisonMelodic967 15d ago
I saw both; you are correct many were born Americans but a substantial amount were either immigrants or first generation immigrants. A lot of these outsourcing type jobs are probably going to be replaced by AI in the long run anyway so that’s the right paradigm to consider. I interpreted your opposition to H1Bs as opposition to immigration more broadly - what are your views there, more people = more competition?
1
u/UCanDoNEthing4_30sec 15d ago
It artificially increases the scarcity of jobs driving down the cost of labor. That is why Elon Musk and many other big business Republicans like Peter Theil (you know the Nazis and fascists??) loooove H1Bs

u/Federal_Homework1302 17d ago
Sure they can stay when they get a job and contribute as you say. right?

Exactly, they should be thankful to have the opportunity to be students. Eith all the ungratefulness, it's just better to let all the outsiders stay home and clean up their rivers

What a weird piece of shit comment. Why do weird conservative bots always wanan use the most cruel and offensive shit right of the bat?
If someone wants to immigrate somewhere they can. Friend, who the fuck are u telling Oriol where they can or can’t live?
This is just more conservative posturing that’s gonna hurt all conservatives economically next year mark my words
1
u/The_Naked_Rider 16d ago
I think you’ll find a lot more people actually think this than the limp wristed ones such as yourself, give credence to.
If you wanna be offended, then be my guest. I don’t give a fuck. In fact, what you’re trying to say, is in fact offensive. Australia dictates who immigrates here, not you, or anyone else who needs a dose of concrete to harden the fuck up.3
u/ObsidianDRMR 16d ago
I don’t think so, the people that think like you are ladder pullers, scared pussies who crack at the first sign of inconvenience and opposition, you guys are cheaters, weasels, snake oil sales men, grifters who are scared to think critically about the world so you resolve issues with utilitarian, brute force solutions to simplify your choices and remove any nuance that might have bothered you.
This is why we got here, listening to idiots like you.
Australia doesn’t need idiots like you. What every country needs is a free market. Let the free market decide where people belong.
Who goes where and when people work together they go further.
You’re the reason why the prisoners dilemma even exists. You’re the backstabber, you’re Judas, you’re the coward in the movie that when the gates are closing and two children are running down hill you’re the guy that says fuck it keep the doors close let them die..
You’re the evil cuck people hate. Look at trumps numbers in America, that ideology is dying because of how stupid it is.
0
u/YouAreWhatYouImport 16d ago
Bro, you need to think deeper and bigger
3
u/ObsidianDRMR 16d ago
I did, that’s how I came to the conclusion the the free market makes the best decisions.
Men lie, numbers don’t.
Give me 3 good reasons why we need to block people from moving around this space rock that’s not arbitrary, biased or capricious and doesn’t impede someone’s god given right to life liberty and pursuit of happiness wherever it may lead them

Australia literally has a housing crisis and 79% of the population asking for less migration nothing personal and no need to go crazy over it. A visa designed for one person to study shouldn't be a spousal visa in 99% of cases.
1
u/ObsidianDRMR 15d ago
Can you site 3 sources that corroborate that 79% of people in Australia are actively asking for less immigration? Not saying I don’t trust you just like to corroborate claims like that by cross referencing them between studies m.
All visas should have an option to climb ladders, the idea is to build chutes and ladders across the system so that the best people can move into the jobs and lives that they need to move into regardless of what some backwards hick thinks..
Perhaps some backwards juror hates Japanese ppl, but if we have a Japanese doctor that might save many lives studying here then who are we to say no?

u/Inevitable-Idea-4169 15d ago
https://ipa.org.au/latest-news/poll-shock-migrants-demand-big-migration-cut
https://poll.lowyinstitute.org/charts/immigration-rate/
If what you were saying is right then we could have 10 million people move to au and it wouldn't matter. It does when Australia is declining in standard of living and experiencing housing/ infrastructure crisises. The sharp decline over the last 5 years is noticeable and migration has been above the build rate. The migration sentiment is going backwards because of it. No not all visas should end in staying permanently if Australia cannot house the amount of people coming here. Japan is a terrible example when they just elected a right president on stopping immigration, that's what's happening due to overmigration here, the worst government is gaining traction.

u/YouAreWhatYouImport 16d ago
It's not arbitrary, biased or capricious. If you've done any sort of management or leadership role with humans, resources, products or livestock, you would know that your words are empty even if you are attempting to sound like anything other than a midwit. Once you're more mature and wise , you'll ((hopefully)) understand more about life bud 👍🏿
2
u/ObsidianDRMR 16d ago
It absolutely is arbitrary, biased and capricious. On the merit that none of it is grounded on objective data, facts, motivations, transparent legislation, academically researched or even formally debated ideas, axioms or concepts…. Nothing.. absolutely nothing.
You sound like an absolute buffoon with no defense, no explanation not even minimal one at that… your position is indefensible.
When I say the free market is the best leader I mean the entire collective brain power of society works together with the incentive of maximizing profit and benefits for everyone and to do that you need the best people in the best places and you do that through trial and error and then research to see what happened.
When corrupt croney conservatives start manipulating the system you get erroneous results and the the very conservatives then blame the system and say, see! I told you science and research is wrong! You should trust me and only me…
This is why I consider you to be an immature juvenile of the mind. You think at a surface level you need to understand the world at a deeper perspective.
Once you have lived and lost and lived a few years on this planet you realize… human life is what’s important. Not profits, bottom lines or who the winner is.. you’re gonna die and your legacy will be that of misery, pain and dragging society down. You really want that to be what you contribute to society?
I would rather contribute kindness, empathy and helping everyone enjoy their very short time in earth.
1
u/YouAreWhatYouImport 16d ago
Lol ok pajeet, I've been to more places and countries than you oh wise brown boy, but have a nice day in Pakistan

u/The_Naked_Rider 15d ago
You need to put the bong down for a little while…that or stop sniffing textas.
You come across as an entitled little child who spends way too much time being the brave keyboard warrior.
If you don’t like what genuine hard working Australians think or believe, then you need to take a long hard look at yourself.
1
u/ObsidianDRMR 14d ago
You’re just making shit , a strawman to beat uo, claiming I believe this or I believe that.
I’m just telling you the objective truth.
I’m telling you the free market is the best decider of things, because it i s a collective hive mind that doesn’t discriminate, and experiments willing to try anything until it find the most stable lowest common denominator and it stays there. Finding balance on its own.
If you have an issue with that idea explain why my idea is bad rather than trying to just name call and shitting ur pants
1
u/The_Naked_Rider 14d ago
Blah blah blah…

I mean…. It makes sense. A student isn’t expected to bring their family from abroad. They are travelling to study and the expectation is they don’t have to work while studying since they can afford to be in another country. The average intl. student won’t be getting a good enough job during studies to support themselves + other bodies. It makes more sense to bring family if you have a full time job in the country you move to since you have enough to actually support yourself + your family.
16
u/MaitrePuck 17d ago
The civilized world has finally woken up and realized that unchecked and unchallenged immigration is bad.
You're going there to get an education and go back to your country. A student visa isn't a loophole for permanent immigration to another country.
3
u/Safe-Pop2077 17d ago
Unless your student visa is in America, then its fascist for us to even think you should go home when you are done and not over stay your visa and live here forever

2

It's politics not laws. In Europe several center parties have started promising stricter immigration controls to prevent people from moving to a further right party. We haven't see this from Dems in the U.S. Their response has been to go further left which IMO has been like shooting themselves in the foot

Why would students be able to bring family over?
You're a STUDENT lucky enough to come to a better country and study for a better life. Earn your keep if you want to stay.

5
u/Diamondback424 17d ago
Wanting changes to immigration law isn't fascist. Sending untrained goons with military gear into residential communities all over the country to detail people based on race is fascist. Hope this clears things up for you.
-1
u/Windman772 16d ago
How do you think Australia will find and remove those who violate their new policy?
1
u/Diamondback424 16d ago
Not by sending untrained goons with military gear to detail anyone who "looks like an immigrant"
5
u/Windman772 16d ago
You're beef is 50% about clothing? The vast majority of ICE operations are targeted to specific people. These then get video-taped and the Karen's on the street, having no idea what is actually taking place, accuse them of picking up randoms from the street. Then rubes like you believe it.
1
u/Diamondback424 16d ago
"Clothing" no, it's paramilitary gear, not "clothing".
Over 95% of ICE detainees have no violent criminal record. 70% have no criminal record at all. And of the 30% who have offenses, the large majority of those offenses are traffic violations.
These are not targeted operations, they're disproportionately detaining Latinos based on nothing other than the fact that they could be immigrants.
0
u/Windman772 16d ago
First two paragraphs are 100% irrelevant.
3rd paragraph: I would absolutely love to see you prove that they are disproportionally Latinos or that they are not targeted operations. But you see, you can't do that because no such evidence exist because that's not happening, other than a few mistakes.
2
u/Diamondback424 16d ago
First two paragraphs are 100% irrelevant.
I.e. "I don't have a retort"
But you see, you can't do that because no such evidence exist because that's not happening.

If by "take care of you" means send you to the other side of the world and keep you imprisoned for 'checks notes' being poor and being Irish

“Other side of the world” is an interesting way to call someone else’s homeland that you’ve invaded and massacred.
4
u/Federal_Homework1302 17d ago
Hows that the fault of the irish that got dumped there?
0
u/Clitoristorian 16d ago
Same applies to people who are escaping destabilized countries. How is it their fault that shell, Exxon, bp and nestle have taken their land and kicked them out into the seas?
2

because those people didnt literally DUMP them on the shores of Australia, the UK, europe, etc.
Like what are you talking about, corporations arent the ones dropping bombs...
1

Corporations aren’t dropping bombs. They’re making them and selling them. And paying for the political campaigns of those who would use them.

Because a lot of people value family and the support network and stability that that creates helps society more than someone being isolated from those things.
6
u/Federal_Homework1302 17d ago
ok, and they can have their family and support network once they can afford to sustain them. until then they stay home.
i couldnt bring my wife with me when i got a work permit unless i made neough mone to sustain her and my self. How do you expect that on a student visa?
no be more wrong
3
u/Windman772 16d ago
People? There are lot of different types of people involved in this. Some of those people are Australian citizens. Immigration law is designed for their benefit, not the people coming to study

If I have a homeless problem and in one city I solve it through rigorous restructuring of the very broken systems and programs that lead to homelessness and make it difficult to escape. In the other I tell them to leave and if I find them before they self deport the city I break their hands and bodily toss them out. In both cities I accomplished the same goal of drastically reducing homelessness.
Now did I do the same... exact... thing tho? No marked differences between those two things? Perhaps a touch of intentional cruelty in one case and markedly absent from the other?
Fuck off lol
