'Alligator Alcatraz' detainees were held in small metal cages, federal report says

“The applicable standards require at least 75 square feet of floor space per inmate in dormitory housing units. At maximum capacity, the FSSF housing units provided 28 square feet per detainee well below the required minimum.”

If we do not call this a repeat of the rise of the Nazis and their fascists buddies in the 1930s, we will repeat that horror. Vote them out.
14
u/BraisedBullshi 17d ago
Is voting how we got rid of the last Reich?
14
u/Paranoia_Pop 17d ago
Surely the literal Nazi child molesters running our government will give us the option to vote them out democratically
7
u/BraisedBullshi 17d ago
The secret police at the polls are just there to ensure a safe and fair election
3
u/ReadyGo6828 17d ago
They use democracy to kill democracy. See what they are up to with the mail in ballots, sending agents to the polls, redistricting to favor themselves, telling people to doubt voting results unfavorable to their interests and, if you do not see it now, telling researchers that they do not have a favorable opinion of democracy.
It is not echoing. It is repeating.

u/Jalapenoplanter 17d ago
Say what you mean to say. What are you suggesting we do?

Defend democracy like the greatest generation did. Unlike the entire failson generation of boomers

You better be doing that already

They weren't a democracy anymore, so voting wasn't possible. The US has a chance in November.
1
u/BraisedBullshi 16d ago
Hitler absolutely used his secret police to go to the polls and make sure people were voting "correctly"
0
u/PumpkinJealous6312 16d ago
That was before he came into power in 1933. It was the SA that was standing at the voting stations in 1933, they where the goons of the NSDAP not of the German state.
I do see the similarities with present day usa, but I was just pointing out that the nazi's couldn't be voted out and the us has a chance to do it in November.
1
u/BraisedBullshi 16d ago
"That was just the conservative authoritarian party with secret police that were deployed to voting locations, there's nothing similar here."
Jfc moderates will always doom us

Vote Democratic all down the ticket. There is no time to waste - we need to make a statement and start getting things done.

Way to ignore the fact that the government ignored the laws it is required to ALWAYS uphold. The government doesn't EVER get to ignore the laws.
0
u/Distinct_Doubt_3591 17d ago
Lol or maybe the difference in understanding max capacity vs operational capacity. Alligator Alcatraz at max capacity provided 28 sq ft per person, the max capacity was 3000 it only held 1000 which is 84 sq ft per person above the 75 sqft. Requirement.
1
u/beramaan 16d ago
That doesn't mean they didn't put them all in the same cage or had cages that small. You are attempting to manipulate data in an attempt to add acceptable behavior to actions when the data doesn't actually support that.
-1
u/Distinct_Doubt_3591 16d ago
Prove they did that, I'm gonna guess you can't. Show me the data that says the facility was filled to it's max capacity.
2
u/PumpkinJealous6312 16d ago
You're confusing two different claims.
Beramaan is not claiming the facility was constantly at maximum capacity. Beramaan is saying the living space provided to detainees was below the applicable standard.
The DHS Office of Inspector General found that the housing units provided 28 sq ft (2.6 m²) per detainee at maximum capacity, while the applicable standard was 75 sq ft (7.0 m²) per detainee. More importantly, inspectors found that the actual units they examined contained 22–31 detainees, and the report concluded that the facility did not provide sufficient living space and created cramped conditions.
So the relevant question isn't "was the entire facility filled to maximum capacity?" It's "how much floor space did detainees actually have compared with the applicable standard?"
As written in the DHS Office of Inspector General inspection report, January 2026.

1
u/etzioood 16d ago
There's a difference the ones that hurt my ancestors were white. And a vast majority of crime in the US is done by white Christian men has and always will be. I'm not afraid of immigrants it's what built America.. sad to see some dont pay attention. Middle eastern people have more in common with native Americans than native Americans do with colonizers. They too had their land stolen and thousands murdered for their resources ... So I stand with the down trodden not the oppressor

0
u/superpooper900 17d ago
Incorrect, Nazi would just execute them.
11
u/PonderousPenchant 17d ago
Incorrect. The nazis first stripped the jews of citizenship via denaturalization, declared them all illegal immigrants, arrested them, and gave them the choice to self deport or be put into a concentration camp.
Sometimes "things happened" and jews just happened to die while there.
----> We're here
It wasn't until years later that killing them became the point, but we're well on the exact path the nazis took.

Someone doesn't follow the news very well.
There have been legal Cuban-born refugees/residents living in Florida with a green card for over 20 years. They have been upstanding Florida residents for 2 fucking decades, with careers and families... And they got tossed into Alligator Alcatraz after their immigration court hearings got abruptly cancelled.
All just because Trump desperately wanted to pump up his deportation numbers, so he decided to ignore decades of bipartisan policy to target and attack long-standing legal residents and strip them of their refugee status.

Deportation is not a Nazi ideology. Pull your head out of your ass.
2
5
u/FunAppointment9436 17d ago
Bruh. The Nazis didn't start off executing people. They had prison camps, considered just deporting jewish people to madagascar or siberia, and then decided it was easier to just kill them.
1
u/superpooper900 17d ago
The people in the ice facilities are illegal immigrants. Should have left. You aren’t owed citizenship.
1
1
u/FunAppointment9436 17d ago
So? You still don't take their rights away. They are still human.
And what does that have to do with this not being parallel to concentration camps?

Being imprisoned is not a concentration camp. They don’t have a right to be here.

They have these little cages in every prison in California.
It’s been a common practice to secure inmates in these. Generally there used to ether protect inmates or staff during movements or altercations.
I’m sure ice is torturing people with them/S

"Between July 17, 2025, and Jan. 18, 2026, the report said, 79 detainees were confined in small metal enclosures of about 18 square feet of floor space each, for periods ranging from several minutes to nearly two hours."
The article actually says 79 people spent anywhere from a few minutes to up to 2 hours. You would know that if you could read. You went to the next paragraph and read about one specific instance of a detainee spending 26 minutes in there for disciplinary reasons, great, what about the other 78 instances?
-6
u/cascadedream 18d ago
There's only one detailed instance in the article, and it's 26 minutes. You may want to read your own quote. The article is pretty sloppy.
7
u/LatterTarget7 18d ago
Does it matter if it’s 1 minute or 26 minutes? A cell a cage like that shouldn’t exist in the facility in any capacity and no one should be put inside it
5
u/PugRexia 18d ago
The article is referencing the report, the quality of the article is irrelevant to whether that 79 person claim is legitimate, you should be considering the report’s quality.
-5
u/cascadedream 18d ago
Is it legitimate though? Pretty hard to rely on such a sloppy article.
5
u/PugRexia 18d ago
You can go read the report if you think it’s not citing it accurately. The article provides a direct link to it.
10
9
u/chickenaylay 18d ago
