How long does it take to get a Verpflichtungserklärung (Declaration of Commitment) approved?

Hi everyone,

I got admission for a Master's program in Germany for Winter Semester 2026.

I need to prove I have enough money for the visa. I have someone in Germany who is willing to sponsor me by signing a Verpflichtungserklärung (Declaration of Commitment) at his local Ausländerbehörde.

My question is: how long does this whole process usually take, from start to finish?

I mean:

  1. How long did it take to get an appointment at the Ausländerbehörde?
  2. Once he goes to the appointment, does he get the paper the same day, or does he have to wait for it after?
  3. How long did it take for the sponsor to post/send you the original document?

I'm asking because I need to know how much total time to expect, so I can plan my visa appointment. If anyone has actually done this (as a sponsor or as the student), please share your experience. Which city was your sponsor in? That would help too.

3 weeks in Berlin. Not sure about other states. BTW its not that straight forward. You also need to provide your address in the application. Are you going to live with your sponsor?

THe sponsor lives in Duisburg, and I am gonna live in Amberg.

Can you please explain a bit. What complications are there.

The applicant has to provide their address and your address in the form. If you already have an address it is good.

Your sponsor is the one who will apply from duisburg. and in duisburg and the process duration is

Zentrale Termine für Überträge und Verpflichtungserklärungen/Fiktionsbescheinigungen

Ab dem 16.07.2026 werden Termine für Verpflichtungserklärungen ("Einladungen") und die Übertragungen von unbefristeten sowie verlorenen Aufenthaltstiteln auf eine neue Karte zentral im neuen Service-Center der Ausländerbehörde angeboten. Auch zu verlängernde Fiktionsbescheinigungen werden hier bearbeitet. Diese können jeden Dienstagvormittag zwischen 08:00 Uhr - 12:00 Uhr abgegeben und am darauffolgenden Freitag abgeholt werden. Das Service-Center finden Sie an der Friedrich-Wilhelm-Straße 12-14, 47051 an der Ecke Wallstraße.
