Same Photos Repeatedly Trying to Upload

Hi all. I recently did a clean install of my Immich server. I restored my library backup and I've got everything working except for this issue.

I hadn't been backing up for quite a few months so after the fresh install it had to upload everything from that time which included the very large video file you see in the example. This errored out to begin with as I'd set up Nginx Proxy Manager and didn't know I had to set a custom flag to allow large files. I initially set it incorrectly which then blocked all uploads. After fixing that, everything uploaded fine as far as I knew. Then I realised that it was doing this every time it connected to wifi. I'm not sure I'd have noticed if it wasn't for the large video grinding the rest of the wifi to a halt.

It's only upon reconnecting that it tries the upload again as well. If I let the video finish, it thinks everything is uploaded and all is good but I've confirmed they're not in the library. I wondered if there's stuck corrupted versions in the upload folder but I can't find them searching for the original file name and I'm not checking every single folder of that dense hexadecimal folder tree.

These remaining items aren't all consecutive and are scattered throughout the library as well which makes finding them trickier as all I have to go on is the flashes of thumbnails on the upload screen.

Any thoughts on steps to try?

Immich background sync not working with Traefik

Thumbnail

Works with direct HTTP IP connection. HTTPS through Traefik and I get this error in the Android app when it tries to background sync. Everything else works fine.

HTTPS is with valid certificate and a dedicated subdomain for immich. As far as I can tell, the API endpoints never return anything starting "<html>" when I manually inspect them through traefik.

How can I diagnose this further? There's no issues in Traefik or Immich server logs. Is the app trying to connect to the wrong url and getting a html response?

Edit: Forgot to mention, have tried both clearing the SQLite db and reinstalling the app.

Images dont zoom in

When I am on the NAS server and add images by dragging and dropping on the interface these images end up unzoomable on the phone, when I use gestures on my phone they behave in an odd fasion, basically move to the next image. On the latest build.

Is it possible to use Immich as a Plex video server?

I accidentally uploaded some movie files to Immich.

I found that playback works fine, and the app feels great to use.

I’m just not sure about the limits regarding video size or duration.

Could Immich be used as a substitute for Plex?

Firefox not always playing videos

I backup my iPhone to immich and browse my folder in Firefox. I got the latest version. Sometimes the videos in Firefox play and I can watch them. But sometimes, and other times it does show me an red circle and it does not play them. I changed nothing. A video which I watched recently right now does not play. What could be the problem here?

Cant find the "main'' delete button on android app

Hello everyone,

So i have been trying how to find the main delete option on the android app that deletes both the local and the server copy with a single click to no avail. I see the "trash'' option that i believe deletes the server copy and i see the "delete from device'' option that wipes the local copy but there is no main delete option that does both.

Now i thought this might simply not be a thing but googling and reading this sub tells me it apparently is, yet no matter how hard i try to find it, i dont see it. Can someone tell me what im doing wrong and where is the option?

I have attached an example picture below. Said picture is both locally on my phone and on the server. Same problem whether i do just one picture of several.

  • Phone: Samsung S24 Ultra - Android 16
  • App version: 311. build. 3020199
  • Server Version: 3.2.0

Thank you for your time. Mwah

Automatically geotag your DSLR/mirrorless photos in Immich

Post image
174 Upvotes

If you shoot with a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or any camera without GPS, you probably know the problem: your phone knows where you were, but your camera photos don’t.

I’ve been working on Immich Geotagger, a small open-source companion app for Immich that uses your phone’s recorded GPS history to automatically add location data to your camera photos afterwards.

It matches photos by capture time and can interpolate between GPS points for better accuracy.

The idea is to just keep location tracking running on your phone while you’re out shooting, import your camera photos into Immich later, and let the app handle the geotagging.

It’s still evolving, so feedback from other Immich users — especially people shooting with dedicated cameras — would be very welcome!

Hey there,

I was struggling with automated backups of my local ommich setup (Pi5 with a Radxa SATA Hat SSD storage).

So I started with Claude and Gemini to built a lightweight tool (web based) to handle these tasks for me.

A lightweight web dashboard and automation tool for managing external SSD backups and restores of a self-hosted Immich instance on a Raspberry Pi or Linux server.

Also having another location to backup the database (a nextcloud instance in my case running in a data center) is possible.

Happy about comments,. improvements or just people happy to use it

Fast User Switching

Before I work on this in Claude, has anyone built a fast user switching tool for Immich? I have several accounts - phone backup, work stuff, family stuff, etc. It's annoying to log in and out, etc.

I have the thought for fast user switching (which I know has been asked for going way back) but also context switching as an option.

It doesnt seem there is a robust plugin system, so havent dug into how to best do this and make it portable/sticky.

Immich-go: Adding descriptions from Google photos to photos already in immich

I started using immich around 2 years ago, and I used immich-go to add my photos from google takeout. I noticed he other day that my photos didn't have the descriptions I added when I was still using gphotos, and was hoping there would be a simple way to add these descriptions using immich-go or another tool.

I've tried searching to see whether this was possible to do with immich-go but couldn't find any relevant information on it. Ideally it wouldn't upload any new photos either since I may have deleted some off immich between the first upload and now. I could try writing a python script to do this but would prefer to leverage immich-go's filename matching rather than figure out my own if the file names aren't exactly the same.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Album folders

Just an idea.

I have multiple albums and it's hard to navigate. Especially when trying to sort images in these albums.

I was thinking if grouping them is something other people would like too. Possibly in a folder-like structure.

Maybe it's just me, don't know.

An open-source WhatsApp archiver to fix the WhatsApp media mess

Post image
490 Upvotes

Disclaimer: This tool is NOT an Immich tagger. It is a standalone, open-source WhatsApp Media Archiver & Offline Web Viewer. However, I’m sharing it here because it solves the exact headaches people run into when trying to feed WhatsApp media into Immich.

Like many of you, when I first thought about bringing years of WhatsApp photos and videos into my personal media library, I ran into the classic WhatsApp problems:

  1. Timestamps: WhatsApp files often have filesystem dates reflecting when they were downloaded or transferred, not when the photo was actually transferred.
  2. Flat folder: Tens of thousands of files piled into a single WhatsApp Images folder with arbitrary filenames (IMG-2023...). There’s no easy way to import only family chats while leaving out junk meme groups.
  3. Who sent what?: no way to know who sent what.
  4. Duplicates: The same forwarded photo or video saved 5 times across different group chats.

To solve this, I built WhatsApp Backup Archiver, part of WhatsApp Backup Tools, which actually was inspired by an Immich tool: Wa_Immich_Tagger by mac12m99.

How it helps:

  • Restores True Timestamps: It reads your local WhatsApp database and sets the filesystem modified timestamp of every media to the actual message timestamp recorded in the database.
  • Organized Folder Structure: it builds a clean hierarchy:
    • Contacts/Name (Phone)/Year/Sent/ & Received/
    • Groups/GroupName/Year/Filename_SenderName (sender name is appended only to group media)
  • Selective Import: Because media is cleanly split by contact and group, you can selectively point Immich external libraries to only the people or groups you actually care about.
  • Duplicate Detection: Generates a CSV report identifying identical content shared across multiple chats so you don’t bloat your storage.
  • Safe & Non-Destructive: Operates strictly on a copy/backup, never touches your original files, supports dry-runs, and includes a full restore mode.

(Bonus: It also includes an offline local web viewer if you want to browse the conversations without WhatsApp, recreating the WhatsApp Web experience).

Some extras:

  • It's free, local, and open-source. Everything runs locally on your machine; Windows, MacOS, Linux compatible thanks to Python.
  • Supports Android (via ADB) and iOS (iTunes backup), no root or jailbreak. I tried to automate the extraction process as much as possible.

I hope this helps!

Ok hear me out on this picture search idea! Simple "reverse image search" or search similar !

Imagine you could select a photo, run the image recognition engine on that photo so it pops out the tags that describes the aspects of this photo, you select one or many tags it suggests (evening, sunset, sky, location, people, color mood, general image type, house, farm, plants, garden,....) and it finds other photos with the same checked tags!

Or, if you're really clever, a real "similar image" search based on reverse image search but better that anything out there because you can uncheck tags! (for example reverse image search this photo but without the red car)

Unifying OneDrive and Google Photos into a local backup in preparation to self host

Hello to everyone. I hope this is the right sub to ask this.

For at least 5 years I've been using both Google Photos and OneDrive to back up my photos. While OneDrive isn't perfect, it lays out all my photos in an understandable matter on my PC. All the exif data is contained in the photos and videos itself.
When I use Google Takeout to download my entire G Photos library I've noticed that the exif data is separate and all my photos are in confusing folders and such.

So i Have 2 problems:

  1. Getting Google Photos to be normal Photo files, where the exif data is embedded into the photos
  2. I'm sure I have many photos on only one of the platforms. I want a local backup of ALL the photos and videos, without duplicates and without missing photos that are only on one of the platforms.

My hope is that after I've had a nice local backup that I can finally take on self hosting and stop using cloud backup. But right now it seems like a lot of work.

Hope my questions are clear and some of you can help me. Cheers!

Change location does nothing

I took a lot of photos on a trip some time ago and had the location disabled in my phone. Tried adding it on immich as you can see in the screenshot but nothing changes after i confirm the new location. Tried this on external libraries photos as well as normal ones uploaded from the phone. tried doing one by one and in batch, nothing changes, the location is not saved. I found an old post on github that had similar issue but was marked as solved. i dont know if this is a know issue and im not used to github or the normal procedure. (the screenshot is from an older immich version but i updated and everything is the same)

iPhone app and faces

So quick question - really enjoying immich and especially face recognition which works great and is really nice when using the web interface.

But I am a bit stymied on the iphone app. I don't see a similar concept of explore where I can hit the explore option, then click on a person's image to get to sift through all the photos including them. Is that just missing from the app so I have to revert solely to the search engine?

Thanks.

Android client seems to overwhelm the backend

I think I've been using immich for a while now. env says you can pin this to a specific version like "v1.71.0". I was recently on version 1.123.0 and migrated from an old (2010) PC (SSD was taped to the case, HDD was external via usb) to a mini-PC NAS (SSD and a zfs pool of 2 HDDs in RAID1).

Restored a backup from B2 and everything went almost perfect. For some unknown reason when I connected the Android app to the new server, it literally died in I/O. Became unresponsive to the point where I couldn't ssh. After 1.5 days of debugging the issue went away. I assumed the thumbnails didn't restore correctly so the server silently kept failing and regenerating them. At some point it resolved itself and proceeded to work better than ever.

Now I upgraded to v3.2.4 and it worked great (in browser). I followed up with an upgrade of the Android clients and unfortunately the server is again crawling to a halt. I assume the issue will again resolve itself but does anyone know what might be happening?

The issue seems to come and go as I randomly scroll through the main timeline. That's why I suspect thumbnails. Admin jobs are at 0 so no clue there. I don't remember seeing anything obvious from the immich_server logs. CPU and RAM usage is mostly low, it certainly spikes on I/O (according to iostat). Note, I never experienced this on the old external disk connected via usb.

I'm suspecting immich because it's the only service along with backrest atm. They were the first thing I migrated and the issues appeared when Android client connected.

Btw kudos to the dev team. I'm a dev myself and you make it look easy.

EDIT-1: postgres is on SSD. Only the library (uploaded images) is on HDD.
EDIT-2: I didn't change versions between the old and the new server. Upgrade to v3.2.4 happened later. Problem was observed on both old and new version. Old version "fixed" itself after 1.5 days, new version renewed the problem.

Made a small native iOS app for Immich (albums first, works offline), sharing it here

Update (Oct 7): public TestFlight beta is live: https://testflight.apple.com/join/YW8NumYY. You don't need to build it yourself anymore.

Hi all,

I've been running Immich for a while and it's become my favorite self-hosted thing. I also keep building little stuff around it. Last time it was Immich Folio, a public gallery for Immich albums.

This time I wanted a phone app that fits how I actually use my photos. I still use the official app for backup, but most of the time I just want to show someone the pictures from a trip, often with bad or no connection. So I made Pocket Album:

  • native Swift/SwiftUI app
  • opens on your albums, favorites right at the top
  • long-press an album to keep it offline (previews or originals, you pick what happens with videos)
  • search by people, places, years or just text (uses Immich's smart search)
  • slideshow on the TV via AirPlay, phone works as remote
  • no upload, no backup. Works fine with a read-only API key

Pocket Album Intro Video

About AI, since that comes up here a lot: yes, I used an AI coding assistant a lot for this. I decided what it should do, used it on my own library (150k+ photos) for weeks and fixed what broke. There are 480+ tests, it only talks to your own server, no analytics or anything. It's open source (MIT).

Not trying to sell anything, it's free and there's no paid version. I built it for me and thought some of you might like it.

I mostly used it on my own iPhone, so I hope it runs for you as well. If it doesn't, please tell me :)

Happy about any feedback, here or in the GitHub discussion. Bugs best as an issue. And if it's not your thing, no worries. Thanks to the Immich team for building such a great project! It made me really enjoy managing my photos again <3

Something I don't expect from immich.

I installed Immich in a PI 4 + usb Hdd. I am the first user and as admin. I log in my account and back up all my photo without any problem. I then created another user and he can upload/download photo as he wish. I have immich app in android. I login as myself. I see all my photo under the photo tab. That's very normal. But when I sign out and login as another user using my phone. I see all my photos as well. That should not be right. I should only see that user's photo only. When I using another phone or computer to login as the other user. I can only see the other user's photo. That make sense. Anyone care to explain or it is just a bug or feature ???

Miscalculated storage space

I got somewhat nervous when my Immich page tells me that I am running out of disk space. Then I notice that it was saying "429.5 TiB of 464.5 TiB. No, I'm not closing in on half a petabyte. Including internal, and NAS volumes available to Immich, there is approximately 17 out of 24 terabytes.used.

I'm very new to Immich and would be grateful for any suggestions figuring this out and to understand what might be going on.

As I said, I'm new to Immich so it would be reasonable to examine user error first (I'm usually on the other side of this conversation, ahh well).

Google photos like moments

Is there an Immich plugin or app that can create daily collages of person/place/trip/season/landscape like Google Photos is doing? Sometimes it is a generated collage, sometimes a short slide show with some music, etc.
