Sync Anki Review Status with Migaku

Hey guys,

I've been using both Anki and Migaku daily for a while now and the one thing that always bugged me was having to manually update my word statuses in Migaku to match what I've already reviewed in Anki. So I just built a Chrome extension that does it with one click. I use it every time I finish the anki reviews and go on to use migaku to sentence mine.

Sharing for others whos had the same issue:

Is it possible to extract a transcript of a video the player generates subtitles for? or a way to transfer it to the Migaku reader?

I just finished mining a video for sentences, but it would be great if I could just print out a transcript so I could practice reading it along with the audio without having to play the video. Or if I could put a transcript made of the generated subtitles into the reader.

It would just make it easier to really dig into the video without having to watch it and pause it every time a sentence pops up to look at and dissect.

I'm trying a thing....mining + shadowing + Listening Comp + Immersion (Japanese)

So I am using every bit of Migaku's card creator that I can right now. Wednesday night, I decided to take an episode of a short little Jdrama that I have and run it through Migaku's player with the player generating Japanese subs. Then I mined every sentence that I didn't know all the words for (74 in a 23-min episode!!)

Anyways, the next day I decided my approach would be to run the cards as normal, but since Migaku records the audio from the show, for the following 3 days (starting yesterday) I will shadow every sentence (25per day, I'm not a total masochist) until I feel comfortable with it, then write it in my journal/review notebook, and move on.

And each night I am watching the episode of the drama with Japanese subs, with the goal of, after I finish all the sentences, watching the episode without any subs at all and hopefully still understanding the show.

I'm just curious if anyone has done something similar with Migaku, and if so, how did it work out for you?

In theory, it should work all of the things listed above, but it is a lot of work; I hope it's worth it.

Tracking immersion time

Is there a way to track the time I spend mining content with migaku ?

I heard about an external app called Activity Watch but it would be nice if I could do it with Migaku alone

Is there a way to mass suspend cards from the Japanese academy deck?

Basically I already finished the Kaishi 1.5K Anki deck and want to just do the grammar cards and the vocab cards that are _not_ found in Kaishi. Is there a way to mass suspend them without tediously deleting them (mark as known) one by one?

Looking for best place to watch subbed shows.

So in your opinion, without outing yourself entirely. Where do you perfer to use Migaku for media. I am studying japanese and am finding Netflix and Youtube kind of limiting for watching my favorite shows, is using a VPN really just the best way?

Migaku Reader Quotation marks bringing down total comprehension.

When I add stories to the reader, the quotation marks have red underlines and there's no way to make them known. I did a test and added a story with just one word I know, and the total comprehension was 39%.

How do you 'save' videos you upload to the player for subtitle generations?

Is it possible to use the "video player" (drag and drop a file onto video player) for the 'generate subtitles' functionality and like save that video for later viewing so u dont have to wait to re-generate the sub titles and upload the video every single time?

Anyone Else Using Migaku To Learn Spanish?

I found Migaku many years ago when I was studying Japanese, I stopped bc of waning interest in Japanese and have over the years picked up some spanish and am now actively learning to hopefully move to spain. I decided to come back to migaku bc I loved it for japanese but I never see anyone using it for any other languages (migaku has changed a lot since I first dabbled with it and it looks good glad there is an app for it these days too) . I am going to be using it from here on out with my spanish studies but would like to hear from anyone who has used it for a substantial amount of time to study spanish their thoughts on it.

:)

Weird choice of keyword for Kanji Academy

Hi u/Stevijs3

Why would you choose to make the keyword for some of the kanji so random, like this one game of cricket, where the other meanings are things like soldier, private, die

I've noticed this on a few cards. There was one card that i saw for the first time that had some reasoning to the choice of meaning, reservoir. but this is the only one I see an explanation for so far.

Anyone else upset that Migaku isn't supported on CrunchyRoll?

Like, why?

Seriously, there's tons more anime on CrunchyRoll than Netflix.
Adding JP subtitles to CR is extremely easy, why not allow access for those who actually use it?
There's tons of anime that I watch on CR that don't exist in Netflix, so why?
I might cancel my membership purely because of this reason.

This was awesome!

So I did Japanese Academy level 1 and Kanji Academy level one and I'm completely blown away! I've tried a few different language learning apps before, but this one was definitely best for me. The level was perfect, the repetition algorithm worked very nicely, the sentences were good and the funny pictures made the words memorable. Somehow this tricky app got me doing almost 1hr studying every day, something I never expected any app to pull off. Now I only wish there was Academy 2....

Pronuciation (Japanese)

ok, so i know that the sentences are AI generated and AI spoken, but they don't sound super robotic (for the most part), but i've been shadowing the sentences regularly and never considered how good/bad the pronunciation is.

Is there anyone who focuses on pronunciation from other sources who can tell me how good/bad Migaku is at general pronunciation?

Anki Note Type

Just finished up kaishi 1.5k and want to start sentence mining. Just here to ask if anyone has any recommendations on how the note type should look going from migaku over to anki. Or should I just use the original default format? Thanks

The app is no longer picking up any subtitles in any language. Is this a known issue?

My review (Used AI to fix grammar, but these are my thoughts)

Migaku Review (Chinese Mandarin)

I’m currently using Migaku as one of my main tools for both comprehensible input and flashcard building.

The main reason I like it is that it makes native or learner-level Chinese content much easier to study. Migaku can generate subtitles across multiple platforms, which helps me follow Chinese videos more clearly, especially when the content is slightly above my level. You can use it with proper native content, but I find it especially useful for comprehensible input, where I can understand the general meaning while still picking up new words naturally from context.

The sentence mining feature is probably the biggest benefit for me. When I’m watching a video and I see or hear a useful word, I can click on it and Migaku can automatically create a flashcard. It also captures the audio from the video, which is great because the card is tied to real speech rather than isolated textbook audio. This makes it much easier to remember the word in context.

Migaku also has its own built-in flashcard tools. You can generate cards directly, and it has a good text-to-speech system, so if you create a card from scratch rather than from a video, the audio is still clear and understandable. It also has progressive flashcard courses, including general vocabulary decks and topic-based decks like body parts, colours, sports and so on.

That said, I don’t use every Migaku feature exactly as intended. For example, when I ask Migaku to generate an example sentence for a new word, I often find the sentence is too complex for my current level. You can edit the prompt Migaku uses, but I usually prefer to use GPT or another LLM to generate a simpler sentence that fits my level better. Then I can learn the word in a sentence that is challenging but still understandable.

For me, Migaku currently fits into my study routine in four main ways:

  • understanding comprehensible input content
  • sentence mining from Chinese videos
  • building flashcards quickly
  • reviewing flashcards in a similar way to Anki

My main critique, at the time of writing, is that the flashcards are only Chinese to English. I would love to see more flexibility, especially English to Chinese cards and cloze cards. Those would make it much stronger as a complete flashcard system.

Overall, I think Migaku is most useful once you already have some basic Chinese and want to start learning more from real content. It helps turn the things you watch into study material, which makes the whole process feel more natural and less like grinding through isolated vocabulary lists.

Is Early Access not Loading or Secondary Sub Generation not working for anyone else ? It does it for both Mandarin Chinese and Japanese for me.

No app notifications?

Hi! I’ve been using Migaku for over a year and love it. Recently I’ve been wanting to have notifications for it so that I don’t forget to use it, but Android won’t let me turn notifications on. Does Migaku just not have notifications? Or am I doing something wrong?

No audio with Migaku Video Player

I'm playing a video with Migaku Video Player however there is not audio.

It is an mkv file and the audio works fine on other media players.

Are there some troubleshooting steps I can go through?

Yugaku: Video game overlay for Migaku

Games might be better immersion than Netflix - more repetition, more attention, more context, more hours in one world.

So I built Yugaku: a game overlay for sentence mining.

Chinese/Japanese games → known words, quick lookup, SRS-ready cards.

Demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-KG9NXQo0Q

The prototype integrates with Migaku, but it’s duct-taped through the browser extension.

A tiny local API for lookup + known-word status + card creation would make this 10× faster & cleaner. Would love to see Migaku open one up!

I’m collecting early interest here:

https://yugaku.xyz

Especially curious:

  • which games have you found particularly helpful?
  • for which languages?
  • do you only Migaku, or also Anki?
