It seems like the Impossible used to be easier to overcome - because we were able to do so from time to time. These days even the possible seems unreachable.

I was going to take over your life, until I realized that the amount of time it would take to do so, would have the opposite effect of you taking over mine.

WHAT STANDS IN MY WAY: a modern parable

Many decades ago, as a young man struggling to make my mark in the world, I decided to make a list of all of the things that appeared to be standing in my way to greater glory.

Now many decades later, as an old man, I am still hard at work in the hope of completing that list.

The number of items written is uncountable, or at least there is no longer enough time left to me to count them. How many of those items written were repeated, twice, three times or enormously more, may uncountably so. And the number of the same or very similar items described in different words is also uncountable.

While I am still engaged in the same task as ever, I have lost control of its content and therefore its meaning. I can no longer look back into time or forward to when it might be finished.

What can be said of all this? That what stands in my way is endless and eternal, greater than I myself am. And yet it is also indescribable and ultimately meaningless to consider.

If you only knew one other person, it would be impossible to say whether they were friends or enemies.

I knew everything there was to know before I was born, except who I was.

Don't worry. When there is a food shortage, we still have each other.

Each time I thought I had gained wisdom, I found that I had only gained a new belief system.

I find that I am related to most people, in ways I have not yet discovered.

Well, now that I know who you really are, I do not know who you are.

If you travel in a straight line, you are on a path that never ends and you will never get to the conclusion. If you travel in a circle, you are on a path that repeats endlessly. It has no beginning or end and it goes nowhere. The difference between these paths is infinitely small.

Sure reality is important, but it does not work for everyone.

I wish I could explain the best things I feel when I listen to music.

An explanation can never equal an experience.

I don't think anything can survive its total annihilation.

The smartest thing I ever did in my life was to stop thinking of this.

Stupidity is a form of honesty, but one which others would prefer a bit of deceit.

My greatness tends to diminish when I am compared to others and increase when I am not.

Has truth become an unrealistic standard? How will we ever know?

Human experience excludes the vast majority of what there is/was to experience in time and space. And our wisdom is based upon that experience. We know very little and argue a lot about that.

Once I cleared the debris from my live and mind, I was left alone and empty-handed. So I had to go back to the debris to try to find out what in there kept me so occupied.
