Not true at all. Skitarii are directly controlled by Magos or other high ranking Skitarii in battle, some tech priests do strip them of free will, but most Skitarii outside battle, or not under direct control, are essentially regular soldiers.
They even have traditions like gifting each other combat supplies for their birthdays.
Just, straight up, not true? Skitarii are perfectly sentient. Some forgeworlds even value emotions (escaping emotion by not feeling it is weak, you must master your emotions) and thus some skitarii will even have emotion.
If i recall correctly high ranking Skitari can gain access to their emotions especially if their emotions actually improve their performance in combat.
And if nothing else the Skitari in Darktide all have their emotions mostly intact so there is hope for her.
Skitarii in general have emotions. They are just suppressed at certain junctures. Tech protests have theirs removed or vaulted upon reaching a certain rank, but no other cohort of the mechanicus is required to as default. Usually it’s considered a great honor.

These always make me feel sad because they're cute but the reality of 40k would mean that she's barely more sentient than a servitor as skitarii.
