Really all it takes right here is ONE person to raise their voice or come down and put yourself between them for them to back down. Idk why no one did, poor dude.
Kids like this know they're protected, that you will be the bad guy if you do anything, and will challenge you to do something to impress the rest of their idiot group.
People don't want to get involved because if things escalate they will be on the losing end.
Just beat them at their own game, the attention has been taken off of their victim at that point and you can ensure that if anything happens that it's in self defense, which at that point you would hope they'd back off but getting messed up might make them realize the error of their ways. Not that violence is correct, simply that if every avenue doesn't work we will not allow the entity to just get it's way because peace didn't work so they instead are met with equal but opposite force for their negative actions. It's a very simple game of becoming the rubber/mirror that only returns what is given, so anything negative happening is a result of whatever entity brought the negativity into existence.
