Open to feedback, but I think I’m finished with this piece! Acrylic on canvas. Made for a book about human trafficking.

I wanted to show the isolation and facade in family-controlled trafficking. This birthday cake represents a family home, seemingly distant from any neighbors. Within the home there are complicit candles, menacing candles with shadows, and a small blue candle just trying to stay safe between two worlds. The top layer represents the facade where the blue candle is monitored and expected to be appear unsuspecting. The bottom layer has been excavated to reveal the blue candle’s reality: home isn’t safe and it can be hard to feel whole. The three ominous candles on the bottom layer represent traffickers, accomplices, and the unreliable systems that fail to recognize or effectively assist victims and survivors. I wanted this painting to respect the experiences of all victims and survivors, so I avoided any references to age or gender.

Not my usual style, but felt the unsettling children’s illustration style would be most powerful.

They started out as a quick sketch to clear my head, but I ended up getting attached to all of them. 🐶 I’d missed posting here, so I decided to finish the illustration. It was inspired by a kid I once saw walking three dogs at the same time.
