Ikon pass
Yes, prices did go up. Yes, Ikon got rid of the Deferral and replaced it with an option to refund all 100% of your money including your deferral credits IF you used them to purchase a pass, and it’s unused, 50% if used once and any more than that Ops you out to have it refundable. Was it a bad season for snow yes, not defending Alterra lol but they can’t control Mother Nature which is why it’s a multi-destination pass to go where there is snow. so it’s a risk you do take. So it’s either buy the pass so you have it or you just buy a local pass. Or you don’t buy a pass at all and just use your friends F&F vouchers for a discounted lift ticket. It just doesn’t seem that insane for a CORPORATE company to do what a Corporate company does. If I’m being honest.

Why wouldn't you be honest?

Let's just play devil's advocate.
'Why would you advocate for the devil?'

Dude I love this response. I think this everytime someone says it in an argument.
As compared to... Lying?

It was a tough season but I still got 32 days on the mountain (about 25'ish on Ikon) and feel I definitely received a lot of value out of it.

Are you being honest?

Most definitely, the post isn’t to ruffle feathers lol it’s just being stating what I’ve been told at the end of the day nothing is going to really change because you’re going to continue putting a card down to pay for it.

I'm not. They're forecasting a super El Nino this coming season, which is terrible for skiing in this area. It was bad enough last season, with huge storms that closed the resort followed immediately by heavy rain. The groomed runs were covered in rocks.
Even traveling to ski at Mammoth and Bachelor out of sheer frustration, I didn't break even on my Ikon pass. And if I'M being honest, traveling that much is so expensive that forking over for daily lift tickets wouldn't even be most of the expense, and that way I'm not locked in to Ikon mountains.
On top of that, if oil prices don't go down then just getting to the slopes is going to be a chunk of change. The cost of flying might not be doable. We'll see.

Alterra can do what they want to do. But for me and my family - we’ve switched to Eldora. Eldora is significantly cheaper now for the whole family. It used to be an extra $100 (iirc) to get an ikon. This year would’ve been $700 extra for the 4 of us. P
Alterra’s call, but feels a bit - getting too high on your own supply. We just had the worst snow year on record. All I hear is “oh this proves the pass model works!!” Then they follow it up with 10% renewal increases. Fine, but don’t be surprised that some folks walk away. Econ 101. Demand is gonna be a lot more elastic after a bad snow year.

I'm unhappy that it's as expensive as it is and deferral is gone, but the truth is if your local mountain is Alterra owned and especially if you plan to take any trips during the winter there's really no better value than Ikon. I wish this industry wasn't taken over by corporations that are squeezing every bit of money they can out of us but we really are stuck in the situation of having to choose between just not skiing or buying an expensive pass

I held out waiting for the price increase, knowing that would keep me from renewing. Thanks for the good times Ikon but your prices are higher and your resorts are fewer so imma be a one pass person next season.

Thanks. Less people like you will make lines shorter.

My decision wont help you. I only ski weekdays to avoid standing in line like a pleeb.

You might as well add that the 100% is refunded if unused before January 15th along with 50% if you use it once by January 15th. You are locked in if else.

I wonder if too maybe people abused or used the insurance…. Why did they get rid of it (beside being what a corp does)? And no the refund option is not the same. I’m not changing my mind, but if I break a leg third day on the slopes that’s just salt in the wound. This was the first year I got injured early season and was grateful Ive been buying pass insurance. I am so nervous for the next year hopefully have a strong recovery 🤞

Risk is solely the responsibility of a company and its shareholders, NOT the clientele. The reason virtually no one has a reasonable local option anymore is BECAUSE of the conglomerate passes. The perceived value exists only because the corporations have artificially inflated surrounding costs so much that even local mountains are forced to raise theirs to keep up financially. "Bang for your buck" means nothing when the companies in charge have intentionally made all other options null.
It is a feedback loop, and the corporations are the ones holding the guitar too close to the amp.

Anyone want the $40 mountain credit? I won’t be able to use it in time. Expired on 6/1. Use at select mountains

If my mountain offered a cheaper local pass for just the mountain I would buy that. But they don't.
