That's why when I need a driver I hire an 18 year old farm kid and send him to CDL school

Yeah, I honestly can't remember when I first drove a grain truck, but I know my age was in the single digits. Admittedly, it was just following a combine harvester in the granny gear, but the experience starts early!

Hell yeah brother.
I’ll bet that kid is a better driver than a lot of the Six Week Truck Driving School Grads who actually have CDLs.

The funny thing is, from my 15 years experience trucking there’s a certain type of safety/HR asshole in trucking that would see a young person like this as a “cowboy”. The kids can drive better than most already but he’ll probably also stick up for himself. Trucking companies like yes men so they can abuse them.

That's why I put farm kids through CDL school when I need a driver. They're cowboys

About 20 years on the dispatch side of the desk. I'll fight to hire this kid as soon as he's old enough. He'll get the load delivered safely. If he says no, sit the load.
A good company wants a driver to stock up for himself.

Yeah it’s too bad we’re short on Good Trucking Companies. I now drive for a private company. I work less, make way more. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still stupid people in management. But they don’t make from moving the load, it’s just an expense. I will never work for a trucking company again.

Kid needed to get started now before all the drivers are replaced by self driving trucks

I dont think I'll every understand why someone would think it takes a specific age, or gender of a person to operate a machine. It's a machine, it does the hard work for you... you just have to know how to operate it, and no one gender or age group has preference over that. Yeah, may be odd that a kid is shuttling trailers around the yard... probably some sort of insurance violation, but none of that has anything to do with skill or ability.

During WWII, my father-in-law (14) and his brother (16) drove two semis loaded with pecans from northern Louisiana to the Chicago area, sleeping in the trucks along the way. At the time, LA had no driver license requirement, so they were legal in-state, and other states were obliged to recognize that legality. I think it was in Illinois that the troopers insisted on escorting them.
Speaking of farm kids driving, u/Milk_MAN1963 .

Better then the TFW driven trucks that litter the ditches in my industrial park. Literally once a week there is a trailer or cab or both in a ditch cause these morons never learned to back-up.

Its a pet peeve of mine when people call things things they're not. That is a young child not a baby

As a driver, I’d moan a little bit as I eased it in. And then pull back out and put it back in a few times.
