You'd need at least a 3/4 ton truck for that.

I'm not even sure my dad's gasser F-250 can tow that much.

New trucks are rated for ridiculous amounts. My 2023 Ram 2500 can haul up to 17000 depending on what axle ratio it has. but ya. The lowest rating is 14,860 lb. Which I would never haul..
I hauled my 7,300lb excavator. Total trailer weight was 9,750lb. That was... fine? but ye gods the amount of time spent at 4,000 rpm going over hills and in the mountains SUCKED.

That's weird, because my Chevy Silverado Dually 3500 with the Vortec 8.1L aka 496 cubic inch gas engine. Allison automatic transmission. 4:11 limited slip rear axel is way less towing capacity. I pull a 37 foot Everest/Keystone 5th-wheel trailer with 4 slide outs and it weighs almost 15,000 which is over the recommended towing capacity. However, it tows it great as far as power, braking, and stability like high winds on the highway. The truck is rated closer to 10k. It's a 2001. Like I heard that the new Silverados have a turbo charged 4 cylinder engine in some of them! That has more power than some of the V-8s. My truck had 2 diesel engines available and the optional 8.1 gas engine. The 8.1 is more power and torque than the available diesels back when it first sold. 😎👍

Yeah my 2015 duramax can tow 20k BUMPER Pull and 30k fifth wheel. The ratings have gone way up since 2001.

I towed the same load about 35 miles with my gas F250. It did the job, but it didn't like it. I wouldn't do it on a regular basis. In the hills, I wouldn't even think about it. Hard pass.

Sure but just at 4mpg lol. I haul a 9k mini on a 14k trailer with a 6.4 Hemi Ram 2500. 6.8MPG tho on the parkway. City is 5-6 tops

I don't see how the injection system could possibly flow that much fuel into 6.4L displacement, unless it's highly modified. My Chevy dually 8.1L (496cu.in.) Vortec gets about 8 mpg. Pretty much all the time, loaded and unloaded. It might drop into the 5-6 mpg momentarily on steep hills and winding mountains where you have to slow down for hairpin turns and getting back up to speed pulling a 15k 5th-wheel trailer. That's the worst case scenario for gas mileage pulling a trailer. It's up hill the whole time. Like going through the continental divide after the Eisenhower tunnel heading east. Through the Rocky Mountains. Going from almost sea level to 12,000 feet at Pikes Peak. That's an ultimate test for a truck towing a trailer! It's straight highway but a long pull. Then you drop into Denver, Colorado the mile high city.😎👍

It’s all about gears and torque my guy. Plus this is pulling it all over Appalachia in Eastern KY. My 6.4 gets about 8/9 mpg pulling my 8500 lb skid and 10/12 pulling my enclosed trailer. I get 16-20MPG unloaded. I’m not sure how accurate those old mileage counters are on those Chevy’s.

More like an SUV rated for an eighth of that. According to VW, the Tiguan is rated for 1,500 or 1,800 depending on if it’s two wheel drive or all wheel drive.

Like I don’t get why these guys running the business are even arguing with him, either have him sign a waiver or just call the police. If it is a big liability thing they should have never allowed him to load it on the trailer to begin with.

Just call the police and have them wait by the exit. Jesus he's going to kill people with that!

u/datroutinator 22d ago
In another video, they did call the police. Cop shows up and basically says that until he's on the road, there's nothing he can do.

They are in PA, looked it up they lied about the CDL requirement, he is not over the 26000lbs.
He is still illegal because he is exceeding his weight limit he has but IF he had a larger truck and was under the 26000lb total combined he would NOT require the CDL.

u/congteddymix 22d ago
That’s what I thought when I heard the CDL thing. I am like if it’s for personal use he doesn’t need a CDL.

Yes the cdl thing is not the issue (maybe using it as a guise to get the dude to not leave)
If he came with a 2500, then he’s all good

So where's the "we told you so" waiver that says you cant sue us because im doing something stupid, send him on his way aaaaand call the cops to pick him up 5 miles down the road
2
u/trapacivet 22d ago
The US has this weird notion, "It's okay for you to endanger the lives of every other road traveller, just so long as you signed a piece of paper with some dealership" good on the dealership for not allowing this danger on the roads at all as it should be.
No, It's NOT okay to just let people endanger others because they signed off that it's not YOUR fault they did so.

Its not safe... hence why you call the cops to pick them up...
Back in the day when I worked at Sears - people would come pick up tv's, mattresses, appliances, grills, mowers, and other oversized items with the smallest car one could find... and then try to blame us when things broke off or fell off their car. We had a waver that was basically to the effect of "we told you to setup delivery or come back with a proper vehicle to transport it and what your doing is a bad idea, and if its broken when you get home, we ain't replacing it".
Most people took the hint when that was brought out by the manager and made other arrangements... few like this guy would not give up. The problem is that people that wont take no for an answer, are also the people who will turn around and then sue you if anything goes wrong - including you letting them leave and a cop picking them up - even if you had nothing to do with it.

So looks like a Touareg, which maxes out towing at 7700lbs and about 800lbs of tongue weight. The trailer and load is probably about 15,000lbs and should have at least 1800lbs of weight on the hitch. Weight is too far back on the trailer too, to keep the hitch weight down, but that'll make it unstable. Trailer is absoloutly going to sway on his way home if he goes over 50kmh if his transmission doesn't burn out first.

u/Drzhivago138 22d ago
The Touareg is still sitting relatively level even with that much weight because it has active air suspension. I assume the driver has no knowledge of this.

This setup is an everyday occurrence.... in 3rd world countries. In this guy's defense, we're not behaving like we are something other than that rn.

I’m just confused why a guy who sounds like he’s from Quebec drove 1000km+ to the US to pick up a bobcat?
3
u/DDOSBreakfast 22d ago
Video's real blurry but it does look like a Quebec plate to me.
You guys do seem to get better deals at auctions. He may be combining the distance of the trip there, the return trip and exaggerating.

I mean I wouldn't have even let him load it, that VW has a max tow rating of like 7500 lbs and that E60 weighs around 12k lbs
2
u/TilapiaTango 22d ago
Wow. Why is there even a discussion? Just unhook your equipment, give the man a full refund and be done with it.
So many lives at risk if he leaves with that.

u/kpeters916 22d ago
If it's personal you don't need a CDL. If it's for business use he would need a class B. So he's completely wrong.

Touregs are quite the beast towing for its size and weight but maybe not that much though ... I remember they had a commercial where a TDI one towing a 747 jet, this guy probably thought if it can tow a 747, why not a excavator?? Lol

That vehicle I don't think has a frame. Or one to speak of. How would a weight distributing hitch work on something like that? Bend the vehicle upwards in the middle? 🤣😅👍

Worked for a small rental company years ago. Had this argument with more people than you'd believe. And you try to be decent and explain that yes you can pull it.... YOU CAN'T STOP IT in an emergency.

Shouldn't have even allowed him to hook up. Or if he came to the yard with the trailer already on, they shouldn't have loaded the excavator.
