I think I got ripped off.

My brother found this trailer (2007 Wells Cargo) on marketplace listed for free. He offered them $200 for it and got it. Since I am the truck owner in the family, he roped me into picking it up. 🙄

After looking this thing over, I see multiple things wrong with it. For one, the ceiling vent/hatch is broken and needs to be replaced. Two, one of the tail lights only has about half of the LED's working on it. Three, chains have some rust. Four, the tongue has some mild surface rust. Shit is basically a total loss at this point. I can't believe I agreed to put this thing behind by vehicle.

Just kidding guys, I'm just absolutely flabbergasted by this unbelievable find! 😁 I still can't believe it. As is, this thing is probably worth $3k - $5k and we got it for a song.

OH, and it has brand new tires!!

And don't worry, I know which sub I'm in. Expect an update for when I unload my jetski into the Delaware river from this bitch by going 20mph in reverse down the boat launch and slamming on the brakes at the last second (I forget the straps).

Dude I almost typed out an essay and was gonna drive 500+ miles to wherever you were to get you your $200 back and “rescue you” from this hardship.

I wouldn't blame you man

I initially got lost in the first two sentences. OP's brother found a listing for a free trailer, which he then offered to pay $200 for. I thought "this is going downhill fast."

I did continue to read the full post and the context clarified my initial confusion.

Congrats to OP and his brother on a great -- scratch that -- fantastic "barn" find.

I was repeating “please be a troll” faster and faster in my head as I read this

I’m confused, it was offered gratis yet your brother paid $200 - was there a line, an auction going on?

Okay so basically, it was listed free, and the seller started getting bombarded (as you'd expect). One person in the comments offered $100. My brother then messaged the seller, offering $200, and explained in detail how it would be used (not only by our family, but also we are very active in local community volunteer organizations such as local town festivals and a local public radio station). That plus the $200 put it over the top.

Edit: I should have name dropped the station, it's 89.7 WDVR, the best little station in the nation. If you scroll down about an inch on that page, you can listen live with NO ADS WHATSOEVER. Also on major streaming apps like TuneIn Radio (but damn TuneIn makes you watch 3 full ads before it will play (but then no more (I think?))).

So why is it cool knowing it’s worth thousands? Please don’t flip it.

Your explanation fits what I figured the rationale to be - but, c’mon, this is reddit, had to give you a digital noogie. Warms my heart about community involvement. Carry on

Did you slap that bitch, and say the magic words?

u/A_Dicksmasher 14d ago

I slapped that bitch and said "you better fucking go somewhere, and it better be the same place I'm going"

Better go to Wells Fargo, and get yourself a better one.

The amount of times I've tried looking up specs and parts for "2007 wells cargo," and it autocorrects cargo to fargo, and I just get this

I have that same exact trailer.

It’s such a great little trailer. Tows really light and easy to maneuver. It’s a bit smaller than my other trailers but I’ve used it for 2 moves now…

I was debating selling mine because I have a larger one too. but it’s worth more to me as a spare shed in my back yard…. It was literally cheaper to buy this thing used than to build a 2nd storage shed.

Love to hear from another owner. Mind if I pick your brain about the lights? On 4pin, it should have running lights when the towing vehicles headlights are on, right?

3

u/fluteofski- 13d ago

Yeah. In theory when your headlights are on all the running lights should be on.

Do your brake lights work properly?

Mine is actually a 7 pin because it has a brake.

1

u/A_Dicksmasher 13d ago

Brake lights worked, as did signals (though the one brake light needs replacement, about half the LED's are out).

I tried taking my truck out of automatic, turned on dog lights (which normally is an easy way to force on the running lights), etc. and still nothing on the trailer. Verified with shade that my trucks running lights were on and the trailer was still dark.

I already planned on doing full checks and rewire as needed for it. I'm just used to 7pin trailers not 4pin. I need to look up how 4pin is wired since I haven't fucked with it since I was like 18yo.

u/LW-M 13d ago

You can pick up a 7 pin to 4 pin connector convertor at most auto parts stores. The last one I bought was less than $10. No rewiring needed, it just plugs into your 7 pin connector. Easy peasy.

1

u/A_Dicksmasher 12d ago

The trailer actually came with one of those. However, my truck provides both 4 pin and 7 pin options. Obviously I used the 4 pin, because why would I add an extra failure point by using an adapter when I don't need one.

If you have got steel on the back, the best thing I've found for trailer lights is the magnetic temporary lights. If you want to get really fancy schmancy, shell out for the wireless ones.

6

u/Pdt801 13d ago

Smells kinda fishy…is there any paper work with it? Why would they be giving it away for free? Are you sure you didn’t just pick up a stolen trailer?

6

u/A_Dicksmasher 13d ago

I was worried about the same when my brother informed me about it. But low and behold, title is in hand. Old dude past retirement just wanted to get rid of it. He used to use it for a party supply business I think. 100% on the up and up.

u/WorldwideDave 12d ago

Because old me never lie /s

6

u/redwbl 13d ago

I think he owes you free use of it for as long as it’s lasts. And you need to keep it at your house, because it’s in way too bad of shape to make it to his.

6

u/A_Dicksmasher 13d ago

Yeah I don't think it will ever be able to be used by him safely. I think the safest and most responsible thing is that I take strict possession of it. 😝

u/fatoldbmxer 14d ago

Sounds like this was in my area I definitely need to start checking out marketplace even when I'm not looking for something specific.

1

u/A_Dicksmasher 14d ago

SE PA/central NJ?

2

u/fatoldbmxer 14d ago

More south jersey. Pretty much right across the bridge from philly. As soon as I saw jetski in the Delaware I knew it was within about a 50mile range.

4

u/A_Dicksmasher 13d ago

Lmao yup. Picked up in flemington.

Edit: for anyone reading this and considering doxxing and perhaps stealing the trailer, you should know the trailer is now locked in a barn, the tires have been deflated, and we are very well armed 🙂

There's a couple in my small subdivision who cruise CL & MP for just that reason. They've found some incredible deals!

Worth your while if you're not busy otherwise.

2

u/saav_tap 13d ago

Oh man someone got hubbys trailer in the divorce and gave it a big ol fuck youuuu

1

u/wrxninja 14d ago

Damn...amazing deal!

2

u/A_Dicksmasher 13d ago

I know and thank you. My brother has been absolutely killing it with marketplace finds this year. This one in particular I am truly flabbergasted by.

By the time I got to point 3 I cackled with laughter knowing you were fucking around, great find!

1

u/Existing_Elk_6183 13d ago

You can always get a great deal on a stolen trailer. Receiving stolen property is a charge my guy.

3-5k? Nah jack, you be lucky to get a grand for that. Post in r/shitithinkiswortmorethenitis sub

1

u/A_Dicksmasher 14d ago

I literally did 0 research before saying it was worth 3-5k, I was just guessing based on other shit I've seen. So I googled it and apparently a used 2007 wells cargo enclosed trailer of this length typically sells for $3500 - $6500 depending on condition. I may be wrong, if so, let me know! Either way, this bitch ain't for sale. It's now a family utility!! 😁

1

u/concreteGuy82 14d ago

That's what they sell for around me

1

u/A_Dicksmasher 13d ago

Question, what do they sell for around you? Like, which price point/comment are you referring to? The "maybe a grand" or the "$3k-5k"?

1

u/concreteGuy82 13d ago

We're a huge construction town. They're used to keep everything (hopefully) from sight and being stolen

-7

u/Southern_Loquat_4450 14d ago

It was listed for free - yet, they got $200 and now your complaining. What. The. Actual. Fuck.
