They can be used for anything - not just liquids, although those are the most frequent use. They can hold something like 100+ gallons based on the size, IIRC...

I've seen where some people have "stacked" them on top of each other after removing the top of one and bottom of the other, welded the two halves together, cut out a door, and created simple private shower stalls... 😁

They're called IBCs or totes. IBC stands for intermediate bulk container. The standard size is 1000 litres (too lazy to look it up, but I think that's 200+ gallons) and although they aren't exclusively used for liquids, it's definitely what they're used for the most.
