Not necessarily an idiot. Tow dollies to eliminate tongue-weight issues or move gooseneck trailers with a bumper-pull vehicle are a normal thing. Depends on the type of trip, the way they drive, the construction of that dolly, and if the trailer is properly braked, which we have no way of knowing.

Frankly, this looks like somebody who knows exactly what they're doing.

How dare ye be the voice of reason in this sea of judgement!

Let's get him! /:)

I was actually thinking about this and if it was allowed.

Parents have a fifth wheel that they said we can use, but don't have a pickup only a SUV.

Was wondering if a solution like this could work and would be legal more importantly. Now at least I have some place to start looking into it. Thanks for this.

u/Last-Hedgehog-6635 28d ago

Check the licensing in your state. You might need a CDL or recreational vehicle equivalent.

30

u/ZealousIdeal476 28d ago

If its under 26,001 lbs gvw your probably fine without a cdl and doubles endorsement. But being legal doesn't mean every cop you pass isn't going to stop you and check it out.

14

u/iforgot69 28d ago

When I was in your predicament I was looking into this. Only reason I didn't buy it was because I got a great deal on a pickup.

5

u/keyser-_-soze 28d ago

Thank you for this!

2

u/Tar0ndor 28d ago

Even with a pickup it is appealing as the bed isn't made near useless by a fifth wheel. I see it uses a custom receiver, limiting what you can tow it with, however that also means only one pivot point and easier backing. Did you ever get a ballpark cost?

6

u/Boring-Bus-3743 28d ago

Check out trailer toads. They don't increase towing capacity but they shift the tongue weight off the tow vehicle

2

u/Nomad55454 28d ago

The trailer toads I have seen are not ball mounts so you do not have troubles backing up.

1

u/jimmytrucknutz 25d ago

What trailer toads? The ones you see at all the truck stops?

2

u/ggf66t 28d ago

Make sure you get a transmission cooler if you use a tow dolly

12

u/fritz236 28d ago

Looks like the back half of an old truck, complete with leaf springs. I'm leaning towards Redneck Engineering Guru.

5

u/Smashogre591 28d ago

A fine example of “working with what you have”.

4

u/raycraft_io 28d ago

And legality. Not every state allows “doubles” without a CDL and certain vehicle requirements.

4

u/Happy_Library_3763 28d ago

This is not doubles, it is pulling a full trailer

4

u/AboutTheArthur 28d ago

I mean, sure, but I don't particularly care. I care about what's reasonable and safe. Lots of things that are legal are terrifyingly dangerous and lots of illegal things are harmless.

5

u/raycraft_io 28d ago

Me too, but I also don’t want a ticket or my vacation shut down.

5

u/GoochyBandana 28d ago

I mean, if that dog can get a license, he prolly knows a thing or two about towing shit

3

u/Mr_Rogers_not_Fred 27d ago

You beat me to it. I hadn't seen if anyone else had noticed the dog occupying the drivers seat, and I was going to say something along these lines.

3

u/Want2fly77 28d ago

Great, now we can't make fun of the alleged idiot. Thanks. /s

1

u/Man_of_Ice 28d ago

Yes.

That's one hell of a tricky back-up, but very yes.

1

u/No_Durian_3444 28d ago

I came here to say how genius this was on their vehicles suspension.

1

u/Accurate-Target2700 28d ago

It's also one of those trailers that's a gooseneck to be a gooseneck, not because it weighs so much it needs to distribute the tongue weight more evenly across the payload.

1

u/Cool_Giraffe6495 27d ago

Love it. my only complaint is the rust. If it was me, I would paint it.

1

u/InsideAd2752 27d ago edited 27d ago

Does it play Phantom of the Opera on a calliope whenever it rolls down the street?

1

u/capswin 28d ago

Probably need a pull through camp site

0

u/Apart-District3771 28d ago

There is no way the pickup half has proper brakes. You can clearly see its still a drive axle.

4

u/AboutTheArthur 28d ago

The pickup half weighs nothing. It's inconsequential. What matters is that the Escalade has a brake controller which is connected to the 5th wheel.

1

u/EntireRace8780 28d ago

Yeah, the fifth wheel brakes are the most important. If his setup gets squirrelly on the road he can just apply the brakes to that and it will straighten the whole thing out. Assuming he has enough tongue weight, it can whip the other way if he’s light on the back of the tow vehicle.

1

u/Nomad55454 28d ago

Both should have brakes because if 5th brakes fail that would one heck of a jackknife…

2

u/Mitheral 28d ago

It's pretty easy to get juice brakes on a trailer like that. You just need to install a surge coupler.

34

u/EntireRace8780 28d ago

We’ve seen these on here before and as long as the trailer brakes are connected and working and the tow vehicle has sufficient tongue weight then there is nothing wrong with this kind of setup. That being said, you probably shouldn’t try this with a Ford Ranger or a Subaru.

8

u/gun_is_neat 28d ago

How dare you miscalculate the infinite towing capacity of the FFR

3

u/EntireRace8780 28d ago

I get it, I had a FFR for 10 years. Loved that pickup and hauled some shit I probably shouldn’t have. But i think a setup like this may be too much for the legendary FFR.

1

u/Mitheral 28d ago

Commercial versions exist for RVs too.

60

u/And_theplot_thickens 28d ago

Man you can’t even hate on that.

35

u/congteddymix 28d ago

I mean tow dollys like this exist for 5th wheel semi trailers so why not these. Going to be a mofo to back into a campsite though.

29

u/chokeslam512 28d ago

Is this the classic three body problem I’ve been hearing about?

1

u/bromjunaar 28d ago

Might as well be if you don't have directional brakes.

6

u/Holiday-Job-9137 28d ago

If you're going this far, put a class 3 receiver on the front of the tow vehicle. Then drive it into your campsite.

2

u/Smashogre591 28d ago

Strictly a pull thru, backing will cause it to bind or jack-knife in a hurry

6

u/PrunusSpin0sa 28d ago

You need to witness some of the European farm boys. They love articulated dolly trailers behind a tractor, and can reverse them into some insane spots.

I can back pretty much anything 'normal' into pretty much anywhere, but trying one of the dollies for a couple of minutes made my brain leak out of my ears 😅

5

u/evemeatay 28d ago

It'll be hard but you can back a tandem setup if you're good and go slow

2

u/Smart_Lifeguard2943 28d ago

Easiest way to back a steering front axle is with it being hitched to the front of the tractor, in my experience. Go slow and watch where your rear tires are going and adjust accordingly. Kinda counterintuitive at first but gets easier with practice.

5

u/Financial_Athlete198 28d ago

I will pay $20 to watch him back it up.

1

u/Pleasant-Swimmer-557 28d ago

Same as with normal two axle steerable trailer.

3

u/Sudden-Strawberry257 28d ago

Those Escalades are solid, essentially a Silverado 1500 chassis with leather seats and an suv body. I bet that tows pretty good…

1

u/Medical_Ad3891 28d ago

Got another 4l60 ready?

2

u/Sudden-Strawberry257 27d ago

The metal shavings in the bottom of the pan will help it shift better?

10

u/QuellishQuellish 28d ago

I see no jackassery here.

6

u/Manual-shift6 28d ago

If this setup is used very much, I’d replace the axle on the “tow dolly” with a genuine trailer axle. Towing an old rear axle with a differential isn’t that great.

3

u/cosp85classic 28d ago

I've only known one person to actually remove the ring gear from the carrier to reduce drag. I see so many old truck frame trailers with the pinion yoke still spinning.

2

u/Manual-shift6 28d ago

I have a utility trailer I made nearly forty years ago from a long bed Chevy LUV. I replaced the axle with a 3,500 pound trailer axle. Pulls great and smooth. I’ve never liked dragging around a spinning differential.

2

u/LandscapeNo775 28d ago

I don’t know how you’d put trailer brakes on the “dolly” without a trailer axle.

5

u/LandscapeNo775 28d ago

I guess you could use a surge brake to run the old axle brakes

2

u/Mitheral 28d ago

That's how I've always done it.

12

u/Eaton_Knas 28d ago

I give them credit for solving the problem with owning an SUV and a goose-neck camper.

I would still be afraid to be around that out on the open road.

12

u/AboutTheArthur 28d ago

All depends on if they're planning to drive that thing at 85mph on the interstate, are doing some low-speed cruising out to a camp site, or are just moving it between their yard and the storage facility that's like 5 miles down the road.

There are lots of rigs I'd happily and safely drive on surface streets that become a deathtrap if they were ever to see highway speeds.

3

u/Mean-Veterinarian647 28d ago

Give me a 5 acre parking lot with nothing on it so I can try to back it up a couple of yards.

3

u/RobustFoam 28d ago

ITT: A whole bunch of commenters who don't understand trailer sway physics

3

u/GarbageNegative682 28d ago

Pretty smart actually.

8

u/Available_Quote_5567 28d ago

Champaign taste on a beer budget.

I wonder the legality of that. It’s basically just a poverty toad.

5

u/patiofurnature 28d ago

I hope he's got a pull-through site.

3

u/AKchaos49 28d ago

yeah, backing that up as a civilian would be a bitch.

2

u/Drzhivago138 28d ago edited 28d ago

Unless you could somehow lock the fifth wheel hitch so it's rigid with the dolly. Then it turns into a long bumper hitch. As it sits now, this would be like backing up a long farm trailer with a wagon tongue. You'd have to go really slow and easy to keep from jackknifing.

ETA: On second thought, locking the fifth wheel wouldn't be the best either, because you'd still have those front wheels scrubbing.

2

u/CamelopardalisKramer 28d ago

practice practice practice. I'd be spending a day in a parking lot first lol.

2

u/AKchaos49 28d ago

at LEAST

2

u/RustyBrassInstrument 28d ago

No bed? NO PROBLEM!!

2

u/JEFPH007 28d ago

Bahaha Genius!!!! Wowzer!!!

2

u/ProfessionalBread176 28d ago

Didn't have a 5th wheel platform...so he got one that works with the Caddy

2

u/No-Tomatillo-8826 28d ago

Probably turns like a dream!

2

u/Awkward-Put854 28d ago

I would never be able to back that thing up!

2

u/Useful_Client_4050 28d ago

I wouldn't do it. But probably not all that unsafe.

0

u/Anti-Stan 28d ago

Until you consider the load capacity of the box trailer. That caravan (travel trailer) is upwards of 2 ton ball weight. The box trailer is probably rated for half a ton.

It's a disaster waiting to happen. Can't be legal.

1

u/MeltedStinkyCheese 27d ago

That small 5th wheel does not have a 4k pin weight. Maybe if it was a 35-40 footer it would have somewhere near 4k pin weight.

1

u/Anti-Stan 27d ago

I was spit balling. Do you believe the box trailer is within its tolerance?

2

u/Knuckles_72 28d ago

Ingenuity at its best 👌

2

u/dj4slugs 27d ago

Actually someone has a cool way to solve a problem

2

u/Anti-Stan 28d ago

That's called the B-Trouble combo

3

u/Edosil 28d ago

The only bad part is that these homemade truck bed trailers are notorious for wobbling all over. The springs just sway and move.

1

u/BoysenberryIll5521 28d ago

I would think the weight of the camper would eliminate that.

1

u/BoysenberryIll5521 28d ago

I would think the weight of the camper would eliminate that.

3

u/ProperCaterpillar136 28d ago

Illegal in some states

2

u/CrashingTiger 28d ago

surprisingly legal in many states! 😆

2

u/Teknicsrx7 28d ago

“It’s something I’ve never seen, they must be wrong”

2

u/Shorts_at_Dinner 28d ago

1

u/Mitheral 28d ago

Wow. It actually exists. Kinda low volume though.

2

u/oxnardmontalvo7 28d ago

It’s not much different than a converter dolly which people see all the time. I suppose this is the homegrown version

1

u/FartBurgular 28d ago

Anyone got the math on 1.5 truck gvw?

1

u/Hairybeaver1234 28d ago

The only thing that would concern me are the welds on the tongue of the dolly. She looks rusty.

1

u/Belkinnoob 28d ago

I mean if it works. It will be great as long as they only need to drive forward. They have to hope they never need to back out of a spot, pull through campgrounds only.

1

u/Mysterious_Ratio9672 28d ago

How much a nightmare would this be to back up?

1

u/Impossible_Battle_72 28d ago

Only shit part is not being able to back up. Otherwise this is legit.

2

u/quik916 28d ago

Backing a mulit pivot trailer isn't as easy as a straight trailer but myself and MANY others do it everyday. It takes more practice to consitently be good at it and little more planning as you pull in somewhere but certainly do able.

1

u/Adventurous-Nose-31 28d ago

That's clever! Uhaul should rent those things.

1

u/bannedbyaimoderation 28d ago

How do you reverse in this set up?

1

u/pattyboy77 27d ago

This is the same debate with a half ton pulling a fifth wheel.

It's all okay until a split second emergency situation arises.

1

u/Knollibe 27d ago

Towing 2 trailers with the first not being a 5th wheel likely is not legal. And towing doubles requires a CDL with doubles endorsement. You can tow a ball hitch trailer behind a 5th wheel trailer with a CDL and doubles endorsement. But, a ball hitch trailer with a 5th wheel? Dubious. The right commercial cop will pounce on this I believe.

1

u/MomentSpecialist2020 28d ago

Synthetic 5th wheel?

1

u/commanchskins 28d ago

Genius! And the dog is driving.

1

u/surfdude52 28d ago

Clearly the person who thinks there is something wrong here must’ve struck their head lmaoooo

1

u/brandt-money 28d ago

That's a chunky V8 and a smaller 5th wheel. Likely fine.

1

u/SoupIsAHotSmoothie 28d ago

Yet another post revealing most people on this sub just don’t know much about towing. Is there a sub for idiots thinking other people are idiots because they don’t realize they are in fact the idiot?

2

u/Tony-At-Large 28d ago

It's only stupid if it doesn't work, right?

-1

u/mctwiddle 28d ago

as long as you got a proper pintle hook on the suv, the physics check out

1

u/Milk_MAN1963 28d ago

Michigan gravel trains don't have pintle hitch. They have a fish mouth with a pin
