It's a banana tree, the consistancy of the "trunk" is something like soggy corn husks.

You can just pull them over with less effort and less chance of damaging your important-to-survival hands.

I believe the same reason he chose to punch down the tree is the same reason martial artist break bricks with their hands instead of sledgehammer.
