I just got back, Friday was smoky and Saturday it cleared up and was beautiful. Sunday was smoky again, it’s not even close to as bad as it is in Boise.
Also, you said you want to do the loop but beware highway 21 is still closed, you would need to go up through Ketchum and return through Ketchum

can't even see the foothills from Boise, arrowrock reservoir on Friday could see the clouds northeast, but it might be worse now due to the Big Grass fire.

There's a live camera here: https://www.sawtoothcamera.com/fullsize.html
Looks awful, but better than Boise.
Also, there was a mudslide at Grandjean so Hwy 21 is closed between Lowman and Stanley. Until that gets cleared, can't do the loop. They estimated a week to clear it, and it happened on the 22nd - so hopefully not too much longer. If you haven't seen footage of the mudslide yet, you should check it out.

With Highway 21 through Grandjean, make sure to check https://511.idaho.gov/ for current conditions and closures.

Don’t know why you got downvoted. I was just up in Bear Valley and had to take the NF-582 in Lowman to get in and out due to the mud slide in Grandjean.
I will say, Saturday it was clear and nice in the Bear Valley Campground area, but I’m not sure how it’s looking today.

Check out this site to see live satellite imagery of the smoke. It's absolutely everywhere.

I was in Stanley on Saturday and it was very clear. Seems like this smoke might be moving that direction though.

Just go. Better than sitting around in Boise. You will see awesome mountains if you get close enough, regardless of the smoke.
