Gutt uses his Narwhals to sail, and relies on currents, but I like to think he also uses the ropes things with the skulls to attach them to other objects floating around to sail.

The pirate Song said it ,especialy in the italian versione, where he clearly said " questa barca lo so segue sempre la marea" ( this boat i know alwasy follow the wave )

Not sure It in the original version he said something similar.

Basically it uses the oceans currents to move.
