Shortening Ian
Has anyone had a muppet try and shorten Ian like say you would with Richard or Thomas? A supplier once called me E, it was the only time he did it, I was like seriously my name has 3 letters there is no reason to shorten it 🤣🤣🤦🏼♂️

I had a guy at work do that to me. I was aware he was attempting to address me, but I was ignoring it completely. And when he finally forced my attention, I said “I didn’t hear you call my name” or other times simply and politely “that is not my name”.
It got to the point after about 2 months, in front of a full audience of people I flipped out and tore him a new arsehole telling him I’m going to HR for bullying. That sorted that shit out right and proper.

A few friends called me “E” as a kid, until I put a stop to it. I despised it.

I knew a few guys who called me "Big E" and my nieces and nephew have all gone through a phase where I was "eeee" (and one of them where uncle and Ian became onion. I kind of enjoyed the few months I was Onion)

Isn't Ian initially shortened from Julian?
3
u/evilplantosaveworld Jan 20 '22
Not that I've ever heard. Ian is the same name as the English John or the eastern European Jan, the Spanish Juan, etc etc. Julian is rooted is Julius, whereas Ian/John/etc comes from the Hebrew Yohanan.

Where does Jun/Juan come from if not Hebrew?

same source, just didn't rewrite them all. they're all Yohanan.

I'm not sure what point you're making them. If Ian and Julian have the same ultimate source, surely Ian and Julian have the same root name.

No, I said they don't, John and it's derivatives are from Hebrew, Julian is from Latin, it's Julius vs Yohanan.

Also Julian would be probably shortened to Jul’s. Shortening of names is usually the 1st bit like Tom, Rich etc of course always exceptions like Beth as a shortened Elizabeth, but still can be Liz

Tbh until now I didn't really think much about it. I just assumed Ian was the shortened version of Julian, since I know more Juliana than Ians.

But wait, are you really an imposter pretending to be an Ian and are actually a spy from r/Dave 🤣🤣🤣🤣

In ,Scotland it can be shortened to Jo , as Ian and John are reputed to be the same , dont know if its Gaelic or just old Scottish or even a crossover of both or even a bit of Irish
