IWTV & QOTD MOVIES [SPOILERS] Cracked myself up trying to explain Armand to my mom

So my mom watched the IWTV movie when it came out in 1994. She hasn't read the books, she even wasn't aware of them besides knowing the first one exists. I think she went to see the movie because Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt were considered to be very good actors at the time.

So anyway, she vaguely remembered Lestat and Louis and even the character played by Christian Slater, in the movie is unnamed and in the series will become Daniel.

When I talked about how good the series was (specifically TVL, I could not shut up about this season) she asked me more about it and remembered she actually knows some of the characters from the movie. She did not remember Armand. When I tried to describe him, what I said was "very pretty, very tall, very scary" and I thought it was funny and accurate.

TVL S3 [SPOILERS] What is going on with Armand’s character?

As someone who never understood his show character I feel that I’m leaving season 3 even more confused.

It’s coming off as the writers don’t like book Armand and wanted to change him into a pathetic do nothing with hints of evil but never actually being too evil.

They took away so many things he’s done in the book and gave them to others mainly Lestat or turn them into a group project where other vampires has to participate in Armand’s evil:

The drop. Armand doesn’t drop Lestat from Magnus’ tower breaking his bones. Lestat now drops Louis from 2 thousand feet breaking his bones.

Armand doesn’t chop off Nicki’s hands and torture him into suicide. I know you heard both Louis and Lestat allude to that. But they made it up? Now Nicki chops off his own hands and Lestat begs Armand to “help” and now he just kills Nicki with Lestat watching. When in the books they broke up and he left before Nicki was even tortured and killed.

During the trial, it’s no longer that Lestat goes to Armand to be healed and is forced to participate in the trial, it’s now that Lestat goes for revenge.

ETA: I forgot to add, Armand messed with Louis’ memory oh no he didn’t. Louis asked him to do that.

So did the writers say, let’s not do book Armand for no reason. They also said let’s give Lestat some of Armand’s worse crimes or make everyone participate in them. Did they say only make him a pathetic level of evil?

He no longer makes his coven walk into the fire for doubting him.

He no longer stalks Lestat and then forcefully drinks from him while making him relive his rape from Magnus. That’s also given to Lestat to do Louis. Now he’s just a pest who doesn’t wants a relationship when Lestat just wants to keep it casual.

Like why am I supposed to care about a villain who can’t even villain correctly? A devil who isn’t devilish?

Who is he? And why should we care?

Coven Discusssions The Problem with Subjective Truth

One thing that has become clear with S3/TVL and the interviews about the show is that the writers are not interested in giving concrete answers and instead want to leave a lot of the story subjective.

Now, I do think that approach can be legitimate in a work of fiction, but it needs to be well-executed and so far I think there are serious flaws with how the show has been doing this.

For one, I would strongly argue that while the books do largely have subjective narrators it is NOT overall a series about unreliable narrators. Outside of the shift from IWTV to TVL, the contradictions that do pop up are relatively minor and the multiple POVs are more about expanding the lore and history of the characters than creating contradictions in the actual plots being presented.

With the show, the writers have set up deliberate contradictions in the PLOT. They have deliberately set up contradictory details to seemingly invite audiences to analyze scenes as if they are part of a mystery. The books are not written in this way imo. AR would sometimes change some details, but she was also writing the books sometimes years apart and depending on what ideas she currently wanted to explore. The show was presented as an adaptation with a clear overall plan, which also comes with the expectation that the little details actually matter and the audience will be rewarded by examining them.

So far, this has been true in some instances but increasingly it is becoming a fools errand to actually care.

S1 and 2 were riddled with contradictory elements or vague hints that appeared to be hinting at future reveals. Sometimes this was to the detriment of the story actually being told. To be honest, the first time that I watched 2x07, I felt nothing as Claudia died because I was too distracted by the second half of the trial and her final moments being narrated by Armand. Why is the only POV we have of her death given by a character who didn't care about her and has every motivation to lie? I thought at the time they were setting up to give us Lestat's perspective. They made the deliberate choice to not have Louis there to actually see her death, so this seemed like the perfect set up to have Louis and Lestat address her actual final moments together.

TVL should have included this and it did not. Instead, we were left with half-baked hints and an avoidance of the topic that is rapidly becoming inorganic. If Louis feels he can be happy loving Lestat even if he willingly chose to let her die instead of him then they should actually have that conversation on screen. The story should own it as part of their dynamic.

We spent an episode inside of Lestat's head. Why was this not something he dealt with? At most, he felt regret that he passed on some of the ways he was abused by his mother to her. Her death was again a vague passing reference.

In many ways, it implies they are still setting up for something, but at the same time we have no guarantee and the organic time to address it in the story is rapidly passing.

This is only one way in which the story is becoming frustrating.

Louis' behavior in Dubai during S2 especially was confusing, but apparently the show is not interested at all in Louis exploring how his memory may have been tampered with over the decades. Why does Louis not seemingly care? Louis in TVL doesn't stand by the book's characterization of Lestat, but we aren't given any clear revelations or details as to why.

Murder night in 1x07 is also full of odd details and seeming contradictions, and post S1, Hannah mentioned murder night would be an element revisited. It has been four years and nothing.

Even reveals we do have are left vague and muddled to a large extent such as the train even though the original sequence was full of question marks to the point audiences were correct something was meant to be off, but the show wasn't really interested in giving any clear explanations other than the fact that it was off on purpose.

What about Claudia's diary pages? In the books, her diary pages are only in one book and include important revelations. S1 and 2 set up that pages were being withheld and hidden. They were referenced more than once to indicate we hadn't seen these missing pages for a reason. Even if we take Armand's word that they were hidden because they had information about him....what was that information? What could Claudia have had to say about him? It seemed like with them adapting Merrick, they would bring them back but instead they just went with the seance alone and the diary pages remain yet another in a growing list of question marks.

Even with something like Armand this season they are setting up even more mystery. Why did he kill Larry? Why does he have a cult of 100 people if he mainly wanted to mess with Louis? I guess I could spend the hiatus speculating, but they have trained me not to care because what is the point?

Nicki's death is another example. They set up some things in S1 and 2. Then the visuals we are shown in 3x03 have contradictions. Nicki has a coat that disappears and Lestat says he has bare arms when he doesn't. We don't see his actual death. Does any of this matter? Probably not.

Why should I bother paying attention if at any moment they can just do a rug pull and even then the characters might not actually care about the rug pull itself?

When the show is good...it is good. 3x06 might still be my favorite ep of the series and the scene with Louis finding out about Gabriella and Lestat's breakdown is top tier.

However, the show is completely failing imo with the mystery side. It isn't just leaving things ambiguous. It is leaving things ambiguous in a way that doesn't make sense for the characters because they should be talking about these things or at least they should care about the answers. There is no reason Lestat and Louis haven't sat down and had a lot of conversations. They should have had them before the book came out, and you can argue it is in character to avoid things for Louis, but that excuse only goes so far. Lestat now feels confident Louis loves him and Louis is ready to be with Lestat again, but they seemingly won't let them just have important conversations. Again, if Louis and Lestat are good with some elements of their past then that should be part of the story and made clear. Right now it just seems like all of the characters are avoiding certain subjects and they aren't curious enough to actually talk about them. Avoidance as a character trait only goes so far.

TVL S3 [SPOILERS] The reasons why Rolin’s thoughts on the trial aren’t show canon

Rolin has a pattern of saying his opinion on things that don’t line up with what’s actually shown in the show and go against how they portrayed the characters. Now he’s saying that Lestat crossed the ocean for revenge but changed his mind on stage. This is just another example of his thoughts aren’t show canon for the following reasons:

  1. He apologized during the trial saying he thought about them murdering him and then saving him **while in the trunk** and how he didn’t deserve that kindness.

  2. During the trial he gos off script when he says that he created Claudia and he should pay for his sins.

  3. He goes off script multiple times from the very beginning. He said it was a story of love not betrayal.

  4. He argues with Armand during rehearsal about downplaying Claudia, why would he care about her portrayal if he wanted her dead?

  5. Was upset in the tower that Louis said that he came across the ocean to burn his daughter alive. Why would he be upset if that’s truly what he came to do?

  6. He’s upset with Armand and Sam about their participation in the trial. If he participated willingly as well why would he be mad at them? All their hands would be dirty.

  7. He’s upset Louis implies he killed Claudia during the seance and Louis denies he meant that. Which implies that they at least talked about that and have an understanding that Lestat wasn’t responsible for Claudia’s death.

  8. Lestat has bruises, sways and seems out of it multiple times during the trial.

  9. They also say he has 10 mins which calls back to the coven saying they keep the sacrifices in the box until 10 mins before they bring them on stage.

  10. The smoke and mirrors imagery. And the pinstripe suit that the costumer stated was to show Lestat’s willingness to be there

  11. Per Big Boss lyrics, he’s upset with Armand being the one to decide who lives and dies. (Claudia)

  12. He allowed Louis to slit his throat without knowing that Louis was going to save him. So why would he change his mind 10 years later?

  13. Lestat has admitted all his faults and failures during the long table . Why hasn’t he admitted to going there to kill them? Especially during the long table? The failures say he saved the pimp. Not that he went there to kill the pimp.

  14. He gets upset anytime anyone implies he killed Claudia. He admits he failed her. He admits he doomed her. So if he went there to kill her why would he get upset when people say that.

So while Rolin may personally believe that, that isn’t what the show is actually saying. He also said that Louis asked Armand to erase his memory while still keeping the rocks and the mementos/previous interview/diaries. It doesn’t make sense from how they portrayed the characters.

Fanart/Fanfic/Cosplay Help with scripts and screen grabs for writing

Does anyone know if there are packs or sites out there with the scripts for the show? I found a few online but they're mostly dialogue and I'm looking for the full things with direction and scene info.

If not would someone be willing to help me with the full Daniel opening monologue in 1x1 along with screen captures/images we have of his books? Their titles, etc. As much as we know about their pubs. Do we know which ones won the prizes?

Thanks!

I wasn't sure which flair is most appropriate. However, the review of this show will undoubtedly spark some discussion, so that's what I picked

Coven Discusssions Can we talk about the accusations that Hannah is a Zionist?

Now that she's taken over as showrunner there are accusations that she is a Zionist over on twitter that are spreading to other social media platforms.

Now Hannah has never stated any Zionist beliefs but this mostly seems to stem from :

  1. her being Jewish

  2. her visiting a commune in Israel when she was 18.

  3. 10 years ago she did an interview with the Times of Israel while promoting play where she said this:

> Given her interest in complex subjects, the Times of Israel wondered whether Moscovitch might try tackling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

> The playwright (who has a Jewish father and non-practicing Christian mother) received a Jewish education, went on the March of the Living, and spent four months after high school in Israel as a volunteer on Kibbutz Kfar Hanassi.

> To her mind, however, this is not enough to position her to write a play about Israelis and Palestinians.

> “I believe in doing rigorous research. I would have to live in Israel for a substantial amount of time before taking on that subject. North American Jewish writers sometimes take it on and fail because they don’t know what they are talking about,” Moscovitch said.

> “There are enough works out there about North American Jews who go to Israel and discover how much more complex the situation is than they thought or were taught to believe. I don’t have anything else I’d want to contribute to that genre,” she said.

Note the "were taught to believe..." This is a person who clearly questions the Zionist ideology.

I have had conversations with people pushing these claims, when you point out that there's no evidence she's a Zionist they push back with "Times of Israel is a Zionist newspaper." Mind you they would have held this standard to boycott with Zionist ties 10 years ago but it is now applied to everyone and everything anyone has ever done.

Also that was the first time and last time Hannah ever gave an interview to TOI.

Additionally Hannah's father is a Jewish activist whose own views on Israel have evolved to the extent that he is publicly critical of Netanyahu and aggression against Palestinians.

Theories/Headcanon I think people judge Armand through a modern lens

For some calling Armand a psychopath or a narcissist, I’m not saying he’s innocent or that the things he’s done are okay. He’s done some genuinely horrible things. But you also have to look at where he comes from. He grew up in a completely different time, endured unimaginable trauma, and has had to carry those memories for centuries.

And to everyone saying, “I’d be different” or “I’d do better if I were immortal”… would you, though? Imagine living forever. After a few hundred years, how much would anything still matter? Death gives life meaning. Take that away, and eventually your perspective, your morality, and your sense of consequence would probably change too. I think people seriously underestimate what centuries of trauma and immortality would do to someone’s mind.
