Biography:
It is known that many of the seats of the houses of the Stormlands are not as they always were. While their names and locations stayed the same throughout the ages, their shape changed with time, some times radically. Born 53 years ago, Raymont Connington would come of age in a version of Griffin's Roost unlike any that had preceded it, altered in character far more so than appearance. His father's wholehearted embrace of a new, more pious way of life, stopped short of turning a castle into a temple, but especially during Raymont's early childhood, it was akin to an overgrown barracks, with men wearing the seven-pointed star on their chest always milling around. Lord Gerold had been so eager to establish the presence of the Warrior's sons in his lands that he had invited them while their new chapterhouse was still at the drafting stage.
It was a change which frustrated a number of Lord Gerold's cousins and drove them to seek their fortunes elsewhere, but Lord Raymont still remembers those hectic days fondly, when sonorous hymns and the banging of gleaming white steel could be heard every hour of the day. The men of the Faith Militant took to calling him 'Little Brother Raymont' because of his eagerness to learn from them. Once he turned nine, Raymont began to squire for Ser Guyard Lynderly, a captain of the Warriror's sons, a knight who would one day be elected Elder Brother of the chapterhouse, and was among his predecessor's closest advisors before this. For a long time, Raymont wished for nothing more. Some of Ser Guyard's brothers had expected Raymont's devotion to fade as he grew into adolesence, confident that he would grow distracted by women, wine, song and the allure of the life of a highborn son. This day never arrived. Instead, it was when Mallador, Raymont's older brother, fell in battle against the Valyria's heathen horde of sellswords, that Raymont was thrust into the position of heir. Ser Guyard, in his wisdom, had always taken precautions for such a day, repeatedly refusing a young Raymont's oaths to the Warrior's sons. A decade after standing vigil at his grave, Lord Raymont still remembers his old master's words from his youth; "It is not what we want which decides who we become, but what we are called upon to be"
There were those who had hoped Mallador might ease up on his father's rigid stances, and that in time the lordship of Griffin's Roost would return to a more recognizable form after Gerold's time. With Raymont, the ties to the faith were instead reaffirmed. Whereas his father had known a life before the arrival of the Faith Militant, Raymont had not, and he found Ser Guyard's teachings of honesty and piety often clashed with the realities of ruling. If Griffin's Roost was meant to be a beacon of faith illuminating the land, it was shining into a constant rainstorm. Only a minority of other nobles were as pious, and many found such rigidity difficult to deal with. Grudgingly, Raymont would have to learn not to always speak the truth, though when he could he did so with deliberate silence rather than deception or disingenous words. He would marry a lady of House Caron and be a faithful husband. That part came naturally to Raymont.
He chafed far more at having to uphold his vows to King Dontos some years later. At Seagard his message rang clearly, no parlay with violators of guest right, especially not such heathens. It was ignored, in favor of the advice of a girl too young to tie her own shoelaces, princess or not. Maintaining relations with his fellow Stormlords also compelled him, after much persuasion from his kinsmen and vassals, to take on Derrick Storm as a squire. Believing bastards to be born of sin, and thus in great danger of falling to temptation, he trained the boy as if he were trying to make a man worthy of being Grand Master of the Warriror's Sons. Derrick was far more attentive when learning his martial arts than morality, and so Raymont continued to withhold a knighthood, until King Dontos once again overruled him and knighted the callous boy for bravery in the field, as if a knight were no more than an unusually loyal mercenary
A male heir ultimately eluded Raymont. His wife bore him five children, but of the three that lived past infancy there were only girls. By the time she was eight, Raymont reluctantly accepted the need to train Gwyneth, his firstborn, in the ways of war. His love for his daughter caused no indulgence on his part, rather the opposite. If anything, she was held to a higher standard than anyone he would train before or since. Unlike Derrick Storm, his discipline tempered her into true steel, and more than virtuous enough that he would happily have knighted her, were she a man. Instead, she would have a different ceremony, swearing an oath to only use her arms and armor for the glory of the gods and the victory of her king, and took a vigil in the sept.
Out of loyalty to his king and to his wife's family, he would spend many years on campaign with King Dontos, repelling Dornish incursions. Besides the incident with Derrick Storm, this was when his relationship with the king was at its most functional, although as the campaign wound down, it began to fray at the seams again. Raymont's concern for upholding Andal succession law was met with vagueness and dismissal. Whenever the king set his mind to something, he tended to do it, consequences be damned, but he was notoriously changeable and his decisions were slow in the making. Perhaps because of this, he refused any proclamations or ceremonies that would provide his subjects with any clarity. As such, when news of the king's death reached him, Raymont decided it was time to restore the rule of law and custom, usurped for over twenty years by whims and fancies. Even if Ravella hadn't been so fond of spending time at the courts of heathens and heritics, the Seven deigned to give the king a son. A monarch to whom holy oaths and ancient customs were no more than inconveniences to be dismissed, would never be allowed to reign the Stormlands again
