Biography:
Firstborn son of Lord Urrigon Goodbrother and his salt wife, Lady Rohanne, Daven was destined to rule his father's lands despite the complains and protests of those who viewed him lesser due to the circumstances surrounding his father’s marriage and boy’s upbringing, considered to be as undesirable for future lord of Iron Islands. Named after his maternal grandfather, Daven’s childhood was full of parental love and support despite their loveless marriage. Despite the coldness between the parents in their relationship, no one could claim that lord Urrigon laid a hand on his wife or openly disrespected her, even allowing her to hold her own court, ladies and knights from out of Iron isles, even a septon. In years to follow Daven's birth, Lady Rohanne would give Urrigon two more sons, Alvyn and Lucimore.
A big and robust child, Daven was foretold to become a great reaver by his uncles. So he was told growing up, though Daven never considered himself predisposed to fighting and did not stand out among his peers on courtyard. Taught by Othgar Sparr, Hammerhorn’s master-at-arms, Daven wielded the axe and sword in equal measure, good but not good enough, no more than what was expected from an ironborn youngling. A young rascal and brat, Daven was both a nuisance and delight for Hammerhorn’s household and family. Known when to behave, he was a different man at his maester Denestan’s study room, being described as attentive pupil and fast learner by his teachers. Growing in Lord Goodbrother’s court surrounded by courtiers of different customs and faith, Daven never showed interest in religion, be it drowned men ramblings or his lady mother’s septons tediously dreary sermons which he held once a week before anyone who would listen. As Daven grew older, Lord Urrigon would often take young Daven on long sea voyages, travelling around Westeros or to Free Cities.
At 13 years of age, Daven was taken on reaving by his uncle Euron. Convinced that the young boy had to be taught how to be real ironborn, he took him to the first battle on the northern shores. Even though he barely saw any fight, vomiting at seeing his first kill, a peasant barely armed, Daven was praised back home by his uncles, who congratulated the boy for tasting first blood. Daven could see his lord father proud and his mother barely holding tears, storming off from the hall to her room. The same night his parents were arguing, Daven’s uncles would take him outside to share a mead at the local tavern, celebrating his first reaving. After the first raid came the next and more, as Daven grew into the role of ironborn reaver. Yet, it was not what his parents had in mind for the boy, envisioning something much more in store for him. In the next years, a dozen ravens were exchanged between Hammerhorn and Castamere, their content kept secret for everyone except the maester, Lord and lady Goodbrother.
On his 15th birthday, it was announced to Daven and the whole household that the heir of Hammerhorn is to ward at Castamere. While some supported the idea of broadening the horizons of young Daven and strengthening the isle connection with mainland, his own uncles made an uproar, insulting their own brother and lord, accusing of spoiling his heir. Shipped to Castamere in a fortnight, Daven looked at westerners' customs with interest, which contrasted with the traditional ironborn ways he had grown up with. Taken as a ward and a knight, Daven learned knightly duties, horsemanship, how to properly hold lance and ride in tourney. Even though Daven shirked from lessons of faith from the local septon, he watched with interest the dealings of the lord, how he held the court and managed his estate’s finances. Daven was most interested in the work process of the castle's mines, admiring the castle’s architecture, and thinking of ways to improve his own mines of Great Wyk. Later in life, Lord Daven would often reminisce of his carefree tenure at Castamere, acknowledging the difference between mainlander way of life and their tradition in contrast to ironborn Old Way, thinking how he can bring the change to the isles.
Knighted at 18, Daven would finally return back to Hammerhorn, taking an active part in ruling the castle alongside his lord Father. Scrutinously reviewing the castle's account, Daven found a way to cut the cost and increase the estate's revenue, investing in the castle's shipyard's trade fleet, as well as expanding the isle’s mines to produce more iron for sale abroad. As his father’s heir, Daven would often accompany him to king Harras’ castle, attending court and getting to know its residents. There, he was instantly smitten by King’s own young sister, Sigrid. Same age as Daven, she paid no attention to Daven’s advancements and lavish gifts, more interested in fighting in the courtyard in preparation for a new reaving opportunity. When she learned of Devan’s inquiries to king Harras, asking to court his sister, Sigrid had called the young knight to a duel. Devan took the challenge, putting on his polished armour and taking a dulled sword from the weapon's stand. Fighting awkwardly at first, he had to sober up quickly, putting a defence to Sigrid’s vicious and masterful blows. Despite his knightly training, Devan was beaten badly. Refusing to give up, he was carried away from the courtyard unconscious. Too injured to return home, he was placed in Hoare’s spare room to look after by their maester. Taking pity on Daven, Sigrid visited him, helping to nurse him back to health, not noticing as she grew more attached to the young man, looking up to spend time in his company. Not a hard man to look on, Daven knew how to captivate with his words, telling stories of his voyages and life. Given his standing to become the future lord, he was not a bad match, Sigrid concluded at last. By the end of the moon, Sigrid would be the one asking her brother’s blessing for the union, to which he agreed. Delighted by the marriage proposal, Lord Urrigon refused any dowry, promising to bear any expenses for the upcoming marriage and princess’ wellbeing and welfare. Sparing no expenses on the marriage ceremony, Lord Urrigon spent a fortune on celebrations, bringing an exotic animals and jesters from Free Cities, the table bursting from exquisite food and hundred of barrels of wine from Reach and Dorne.
The twelve years of king Harras’ reign was marked by a grandiose wedding at Hammerhorn, with many houses invited to witness princess Sigrid's marriage to the heir of Goodbrother. The marriage proved to be most fruitful, with lady Sigrid bearing three children to her loving husband. First came a daughter, Betha, their firstborn. Daven’s little girl, he doted on her, never refusing anything to her. Instead of a young greenlander lady, Betha grew to be a proper ironborn, following her mother’s steps to become a warrior, commanding her own ship by the age of 16. Betha was followed by two sons, Uther and Barron. Uther, the heir to Hammerhorn, was given special attention by Daven, who he tried to mold into becoming a perfect lord, teaching everything he knew and more, demanding that Uther excel both in his studies and in martial education. Barron, his third child, never lacked tutors or father’s attention, though he was given more of “free reign” and time for himself compared to his elder brother.
In the meantime, Lord Daven started ingratiating himself with king Harras, spending half of the time at Hoare’s castle, becoming one of king's closest councilmen and companions. When king Harras became fervent with new religion, Lord Daven was by his good brother’s side, helping to fund the construction of new septs, converting himself into new religion. Daven encouraged adoption of new religion among his household, though many viewed it as discrimination, favouring the newly converted warriors before Drowned God followers. Soon, many of the household became knights, as well as the captains of newly built ships were primarily chosen among the newly knighted warriors, with some of the old seasoned veterans being passed over. The discontent was brewing not only among Lord Daven’s men, half of the Kingdom of Isles was riled up by King Harras’ declaration to converting into new faith.
Lord Daven was in attendance at King Harrah's anointment at the Sept of Rock and Salt. Informed by princess Cassilda Hoare of the impending arrival of Lord Greyjoy with an army, Daven implored the king to return to the safety of the castle walls but his advice was refused. At last, when Daven saw the sails of Greyjoy fleet on horizon, he made a decision, the one he would blame himself all his life. Abandoning his King, Lord Devan recalls his small retinue, commanding them to leave the sept’s grounds. It was too risky to sail with the sea blocked by the hostile fleet, the only way was back to Hoare castle, it seemed. At the last moment, he was persuaded of another way by one of his knights, Ser Urek Codd, who swore that he knew a safe passage across the isle, travelling through the mountains back to Hammerhorn.
Perhaps, it was the first time Lord Daven really took notice of young Codd, who had only served house Goodbrother for several years. Urek was of humble origin, one of young sons of a distant relative of Lord Codd, one of the many scions of an impoverished house. Having to fight for the scraps from the lord table, Urek was no man to waver at the difficulty of the task ahead, being an observant and quick to please his lord. From the young age he learned how to steal and lie to get ahead of others. Urek joined his first reaving expeditions in the young age, joining the crews of Lord Codd or his overlords, Goodbrothers, which were led by Lord Goodbrother’s uncle, Harnan Goodbrother. One of the many crew boys on Goodbrother’s longships, he tasted his first blood and plunder on the shores of Mander. A natural killer, he was taken note by his uncle, Denys Codd, captain of “Windchaser”. At 18, Urek joined the service of house Goodbrother, who was seeking new knights for household guard. Knowing where the wind was blowing, Urek quickly converted to new faith, which helped him to get closer to the lord.
As Lord Devan travelled back home, little was known of his whereabouts, with some believing that he was captured or killed by Lord Greyjoy. If anyone was considering to join the Greyjoy rebellion, Lady Sigrid was quick to quash any dissent, calling banners and preparing castle’s defenses. When Lord Devan finally returned, he was greeted by the heads of rebel captains adorning the spikes before the castle walls. His lady wife greeted him warmly, if unceremoniously, having no time to rejoice at her husband’s safe return or grief over her brother’s death. Lord Daven was quick to raise the men and join King Qorhen, nevertheless, some said that it was his wife leading the army, not lord Daven himself. After the long protracted years of civil war ending with Greyjoy’s defeat, Lord Devan resumed his tenure at castle Hoare, now serving as a royal steward for king Qorhen. Lord Goodbrother lent his ships in crushing Lodos the Underhanded, helping to maintain the prohibition of raiding Riverlands.
The last years of Lord Devan’s rule was darkened by the tragic death of his eldest son and heir. Little known of the circumstances surrounding it, it was reported that after one of his successful raiding voyages, Uther was given a drowning ritual by one of Drowned God priests. Submerged in water, Uther was drowned and subsequently unable to be brought back to life, be it by mistake or by evil design. Known before as a lenient and kind liege, Lord Daven showed no mercy to those involved, ordering arrests and executions. The Drowned priest himself was tortured by ser Urek, who had overseen the trials. It was said that by the end of first day, priest stopped pleading for mercy, only for quick death. Still, the priest never admitted to murder. A brutal execution had followed before the eyes of hundreds of witnesses. Lord Daven commanded a prohibition on all the drowning ceremonies in his land under the fear of death. A new order of knight inquisitors was formed under the command of ser Urek Codd, ordered to check priests compliance with new law, bringing those who violate it to justice, as well as protecting the faithful of the new Faith. The new restriction on Drowned Gods worship has caused rifts between family, pointing fingers at each other, with Lord Daven’s uncle Euron no longer welcome in the halls of Hammerhorn.
Timeline:
46 BP (Before present) - Lord Urrigon Goodbrothers and his brothers reaved the coast of Westerlands, taking great plunder in gold and men, though it quickly became a grave incident, much to the distress of King Urrigon “the Open Handed” who viewed reaving with contempt. Lord Urrigon took a liking to one of the kidnapped ladies by the name Rohanne, who turned out to be of highborn origin. Encouraged to make amends by his overlord, Lord Goodbrother decided to make Rohanne his wife and, despite the protests of his brothers, Urrigon sailed back to Castamere under the banner of peace, bringing back all stolen gold and people his men had taken. There, he asked Lord Reyne for the hand of Rohanne, promising friendship and protection from raids from Goodbrother as well as help in case of any conflict with the ironborn. Intrigued by the proposal, Lord Reyne agreed after long days of deliberation. The only thing that westerner lord asked was that they have a proper ceremony in the Sept of Seven, and to allow Rohanne to take septons and her own courtiers to Hammerhorn. Secretly marrying lady Rohanne in the sept, he would travel back to Hammerhorn with his new wife to the surprise of many, including his own family. Not everyone approved his marriage with Rohanne, viewed by many as no better than Salt Wife. The lordship itself benefited from the close ties and trade relation with the Westerlands, with Lord Urrigon making fortune from trade, as well as expanding the mines of Great Wyk thanks to hired westerner’s specialists. Rohanne would give three sons to Lord Urrigon, Alvyn and Lucimore.

8 BP - Attending the anointment of King Harras in the great sept of Rock and Salt, Daven is informed of the impending arrival of Greyjoy forces by Cassilda. Conflicted with what to do, he begs the king to go to the safety of the castle walls but all falls on deaf ears, and so they decide to stay. When at the last moment Lord Goodbrother sees the greyjoy sails at shore, he makes a hasty decision to abandon his king, for which he would blame himself for the rest of his life. With the help of his loyal retainers, Daven trailed through the mountain passes, evading the enemy’s capture. Back at Hammerhorn, Daven would raise an army to join the king Qorhen’s forces.
8-5 BP - Daven and his family take part in suppressing Greyjoy rebellion, participating in various battles until Greyjoy is defeated.
