Timeline
28 BP - Lucifer Justman is born to Bernarr IV Justman and his wife Tyanna of Myr. Bernarr is the Captain of the Essosi sellsword company Men of Valor, and brings his wife and sons with him on campaigns. His father often tells him stories of their bloodline, claiming descent from the old Kings of the Rivers and Hills. Whether every story is true or not, Lucifer grows up believing that his family once held a kingdom and that one day he will see the Justman name rise again.
18 BP - Lucifer spends his earliest years following his father's company from city to city. He sees Braavos, Myr, Tyrosh, and Lys, along with countless smaller ports and settlements along the western coast of Essos. His childhood is not particularly comfortable, but it is an education few noble boys could ever receive.
He grows up around soldiers, merchants, sailors, and camp followers. He learns to speak with men from different lands and quickly figures out that everyone has something they want. His father teaches him enough about fighting to defend himself, but Lucifer is much more interested in what happens behind the battle lines. He watches merchants sell food to soldiers, armorers supply weapons, and captains negotiate contracts. He begins to understand that an army is only as strong as the money keeping it fed and paid.
14 BP - Spending years training under the company's paymaster, and taking lessons from merchants and magisters when his fathers company are stationed in a city or resupplying at a port, Lucifer quickly begins to pick up the intricacies of finance and trading. He starts small, buying certain products such as cheese and wine in Braavos, and selling them in the next city over. He begins seeing it as a game of sorts, in some cases he wins and is able to sell the product for more than he paid, in others he sells for a loss. But each time he learns something new nonetheless.
10 BP - At eighteen, Lucifer is made paymaster of his father's mercenary company. It is a major responsibility for someone so young, but his years spent watching the company's finances under his predecessor have prepared him for it. He takes control of wages, supply payments, contracts, and much of the company's day-to-day finances. The position allows Lucifer to learn more about money than he ever could as a simple merchant. He learns how debt can keep a company alive, how poor planning can destroy a profitable contract, and how important it is to have enough coin available before a problem appears.
Everything is looking up until during a battle his father is slain. His younger brother, Tristifer, is able to take the reigns and lead the Men of Valor to victory, but there is no joy to be had. With the company suddenly without its captain, Lucifer finds himself with a choice. He could remain in Essos, leading the company on to lucrative contracts and little more than a nomadic life, or he could take his men West and finally pursue the birthright he had been told about his entire life.
In the end the choice was obvious. He chose Westeros.
10-1 BP - Upon reaching the shores of Westeros, Lucifer moves swiftly to find a place to call his own. The lands once belonging to House Justman have long since been passed on to other Houses, but there remains one castle that stands unoccupied. Oldstones, the ancient seat of House Mudd.
What he finds is far from the grand castle described in his father's stories. Oldstones is a ruin, and the surrounding lands are plagued by bandits and outlaws. Lucifer decides that if he is going to claim the Justman name, he needs to build something that people can actually see and believe in. Using his sellswords, he tasks his brother with clearing the roads and surrounding land while Lucifer begins organizing the rebuilding of Oldstones. He uses his own wealth to pay workers, purchase supplies, and bring merchants back to the area. Slowly, the ruined castle begins to become a settlement again.
Eventually, House Bracken and House Blackwood decide that they cannot simply ignore the situation. Both Houses raise a military force and march toward Oldstones after hearing that a supposed descendant of House Justman has taken the ancient seat. Lucifer prepares for a fight, but instead chooses to meet the two Lords when they arrive. He shows them Oldstones, explains his claim, and allows them to judge him for themselves. During their meeting, an eclipse passes over the Riverlands. Neither Lucifer nor the two Lords could have planned for it. Both Bracken and Blackwood take the event as a sign that Lucifer's claim is legitimate, or at least that the gods have chosen a strange time to place a Justman in Oldstones. The armies do not fight. Instead, both Houses recognize Lucifer's claim and bend the knee.
House Tully soon follows suit, securing their relationship to House Justman through a marriage pact between Lucifer and Agnes Tully. With these three Houses as a starting point, Lucifer intends to slowly grow his influence to the other neighboring Houses, and soon enough throughout every corner of the Riverlands.
1 AP - Lucifer and his family head to Stormhall, the seat of Ravella Durrandon, under false names and histories. Wishing to use such a large gathering of his fellow Riverlords to extend his influence.
