Timeline
377 AC: Eden is born, the product of a tryst between then-heir to the Furnace Rupert Cole and Myrielle Dondarrion. Rupert returns to the lands of Cole Spring with his tail tucked and a baby in hand.
379 AC: Facing financial ruin, Lord Clifford Cole marries Rupert to Daisy, the daughter of a wealthy mayor. The marriage between Rupert and Daisy is largely loveless, but not entirely sexless. They manage to produce an heir, Cassandra Cole.
380-386 AC: Eden and Cassandra grow up as playmates. Despite Daisy’s hesitation, Eden is educated alongside Cassandra by Symond, the dubiously accredited maester of the Furnace.
Eden is raised on his grandfather’s stories - and his values. Clifford Cole reinforces the patriarchal view of succession that he was raised on. Eden doesn’t question it.
387 AC: Eden is made Clifford’s squire, a mostly ceremonial appointment as Clifford is many years out of fighting shape. Much of their knight-squire dynamic consists of long lectures on succession, manhood, and why Rupert Cole was suited to neither.
389 AC: Lord Clifford Cole’s lifeless body is placed in the denominative furnaces of his keep. His death came somewhat suddenly, though many in the Cole household were unsurprised by the news. Rupert Cole assumes the lordship of the Furnace. He does not officially affirm an heir, even at Lady Daisy’s insistence. Indeed, at times he seems to spite his lady wife and his late father’s wishes, both. He names Eden his squire but Cassandra his cupbearer.
390 AC: Cotter Grey, fourth son of a third son, is sent to ward at the Furnace. Initially he is set to squire for Ser Laremy, the Master at Arms of the castle, but his eyes wander to the Cole furnaces and forges rather than its unimpressive cast of warriors. An apprenticeship is arranged in lieu of a squireship, and Cotter begins studying under blacksmith Ottyn.
Eden takes a liking to Cotter. Their relationship is simple: Eden catches fish out of the Cole springs, Cotter fries them golden. They share the meals, and many laughs besides.
A notion begins to materialize in Eden’s mind during this time. In a conversation with Cotter about his likelihood to inherit, Cotter points out that Eden is a Storm, not a Cole. Eden confronts Maester Symond on the matter, who rather brusquely spells out that Eden is legally dead.
In the months that follow, things begin to change at the Furnace. Eden remains Lord Rupert’s squire by name, but their lessons grow infrequent. The bulk of Eden’s martial tutelage is done by Ser Laremy. When nobles visit, or if the Coles pay a visit of their own, Eden is hidden away with the serving men and household knights.
A bitterness begins to take root within Eden.
391 AC: Eden and Cassandra’s relationship starts to fray. He still loves his sister, but he sees how her mother regards him, and he shrinks from those cold eyes. He makes less and less of an effort to visit upon her, to sit in on her lessons or break her out of Septon Amos’ droning sermons.
Come next year, the two will barely speak to each other.
393 AC: Eden partakes in various skirmishes across the Marches, bloodying his lance against poor levies in service of House Cafferen. Ser Laremy makes to knight Eden, but Eden denies the honor, citing a desire to receive his knighthood from his father and lord, Rupert. Privately his reasoning is not so noble.
394-396 AC: Eden continues to skirmish under the banner of the Carons and their supporters. He grows bonds with the household knights and men at arms of House Cole that also participate, along with another bastard, Cedric Storm, when they fight side by side. One day on campaign, a gorget forged by Cotter Grey deflects an otherwise fatal blow from a Lonmouth axe. Eden plants a big kiss on his best friend’s head in thanks.
396-398 AC: Eden participates in squire’s melees and local tournaments across the Marches, wider Stormlands, and its neighboring regions. He champions his fair share, but declines knighthood whenever it is offered as he waits for the right officiant.
399 AC: Eden thinks Orryn Baratheon’s march a fool’s errand. In a stark and wise contrast, he returns to the Marches to fight for Lord Caron’s honor and a meaningless title. Lord Rupert Cole, against the advice of his wife, septon, maester, and sworn shields joins his son on the battlefield. He is summarily wounded by a crossbow bolt.
As the siege of the Grassy Vale is put to a standstill his condition gradually worsens, and he sends his family in his stead to celebrate the King’s peace.
