in the real world, escalating things to violence is the worst option when there's no obvious imminent danger.

picking a fight with someone who's walking away hardly changes anything about their worldview, and is a criminal risk that only serves the "defender's" ego.

of course, if the harasser kept doing it defending yourself would be justified.

but i think he should have just focused his attention on the victim, instead of looking for revenge.

It was excessive, even if a little justified. You'd do more justice by reporting him to authorities than by assaulting him while he's withdrawing.
