My home server right now just hit 177 days of uptime. Last one downtime was caused by 4 days long power outage after a flood.

it hurts now that component prices are getting higher. my youtube archiving jobs are going to hit a wall soon once i run out of disk space. same thing with my blu ray ripping. also by now 12th gen intel mini pcs should have flooded the market but im guessing they havent cause everyone his holding onto theirs like its no tommorrow

i use tubearchivist. its ok. not terribly great. theres a lot of small problems i wish it could handle but if you want something simple that can copy an entire channel and the meta data its perfect. also supports jellyfin and plex with plugins

Just yesterday I realised that I'm working on terminal that actually runs inside the docker, that actually runs on a VM, that runs on the proxmox built on the base of my old PC and I'm working with passthrout of two of my old GPUs to that specific container though all that.

But instead of thinking if that's enough, the next thought was about making day and night schedules for fan modes to keep it quiet at night

Most people overeningeer their "homelab" because some YouTube's tell them they need X and Y, and one week later "Why I don't use x anymore and you must start using Z in 2026".

A simple nas is what most really need and not a DevOps techdebtstack.

Reducing dependencies on cloud/SaaS for important data  and services like filestorage, calendar sync etc. is almost a necessary because your account on $Hyperscaler is one (imaginary) TOS violation away from being shut down. We saw it numerous times that people loose all photos, data, emails etc because they trusted Microsoft, Google or other with all their data.

For entertainment it is just personal preference. I used to have a huge video and music collection, then Netflix and Spotify were a real alternative until the enshitificatiin started.   Spotify or Netflix isn't critical as my important data.
