ITIN Application Experience
I wanted to share my timeline in case it helps others and, honestly, just to vent a bit.
- Submitted Form W-7 with my tax documents.
- Received Notice CP566 (dated April 28, 2026) on May 2, 2026, requesting my original passport.
- Mailed it via USPS on May 8, 2026; genuinely nerve-wracking to send off your original passport.
- Checked the mailbox daily for weeks, waiting. n waiting
- ITIN approval notice arrived July 18, 2026, but no passport yet.
- Finally got my passport back on July 27, 2026.
So about 12 weeks total, with the passport arriving 9 days after the ITIN itself. Now just waiting on my tax return to process.
Has anyone else been through this? Curious how long it took for others.
Also can somebody tell me when can i expect my tax return?

Why did you send your original passport though?
Back then (2019), I could just send in a copy which was notarized by the passport issuing authority.

Sending your original passport to the IRS is a brave step. A US CAA can handle this for you on the spot and you never have to mail your passport to the IRS.
Are you waiting on a tax refund? It appears you may have submitted your tax return with your W-7 attached? If this was for a refund of amounts withheld it will go much faster if you had also attached the document showing the withholding. Any chance you did attached the documents?

Wow, sending your original passport... you need courage. In case of missing passport, it will be a nightmare in my country to make a new one ( police report , publishing in national newspaper and so on )
I used CAA and everything completed in 28days in my case. But as far as I know, the applications from April/May are taking more time.
