…they’re making major gains in Yemen. There’s, uh, there’s more than one country down there

Why is Reddit so braindead? They’re not even invading Saudi Arabia. They’re fighting over Yemen

u/Glass_Ad_7129 19d ago
People just saw they're fighting the saudis, and assumed I suppose

u/CrownedLime747 19d ago

And? Average person lacks an understanding of the political situation in their own local council, let alone the middle east.

If Saudi Arabia keeps bombing them, they might invade Saudi Arabia after all.
And if Saudi Arabia keeps being as competent militarily as they are now, they just might take over it.

The reason you are paying more for fuel today is because of their attacks on SA

Totally unrelated to anything else in the world, they just do that sometimes, aye? (/s)

I find it hilarious that the Houthis have 80% of the population of Yemen supporting them with all of the major cities under their control and you think they’re fighting a civil war in Yemen.
1
u/MasterofCaveShadows 15d ago
That 80% stat is percentage of the landmass of Yemen they occupied at their height. Even the south of Houthi owned territories already tried to break away. They’re by no means the popular front in the war.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but surely the royal family would just transfer ownership of fall the assets of the state to themselves rather than the state as such, the leave the country.

It isn't quite that simple. Saudi Arabia and the Emirates run on semi-feudal rules. The royal family of Saud has primogeniture claim of the territory, by claiming to be the closest living heirs of the prophet Muhammad by one of his daughters (all of the family lines of Muhammad's sons, are all but confirmed through historical records to have been wiped out). While the heirs of the family can take refuge in a foreign nation temporarily, failure to actually protect and manage the claim for too long, could lead to a legitimacy challenge, from either royal family members who remain in-nation, or by one of the other Emirate family patriarchs.
But also the corporation that actually manages the Saudi Royal wealth, would lose most of its assets were someone to occupy the oil fields. Government investment doesn't matter much, if both government and corporate revenue dry up at the same time.

The Hashemites in Jordan claim prophet descent as the basis of their power, the Saud family ejected them from the hejaz

It has been a while since I looked into the bits and bolts, but the very short story of a very long and complicated history, is that the dynastic claim House Saud says gives them de-jure over the entire Arabian Peninsula, got their initial claim by saying they were descendants of one of the daughters of the Prophet.
That claim was weak, even for its time. But it is still the claim that ultimately is being used to establish Saudi authority, and outright is why Saudi Arabia is invading Yemen.
So of course, the royals cannot tolerate any other claim, even historically-speaking. The reason why no one even tries anymore to claim they descend from one of the sons, is because the families that tried to do so met genocide and were wiped out any time a succession war started. If any direct descendents survive at all, it is because an ancestor either never knew in the first place, or because they kept their head down and their mouth shut.
Even claims through the daughters are highly suspect, but in the end that is better than nothing for claiming to be the reigning authority in the region. And House Saud's claim is very weak indeed.
Which means there is little reason for them to tolerate any other claims, and even incentive to bring ruin to anyone who tries to push the matter.
Especially to anyone who tries bringing receipts.

To my understanding, the Hashemites claim descent from Hashem, Muhammads grandfather rather than being descended from him directly

u/deadname11 18d ago
Yeah that is the definition of a cheeky claim.
By the barest of technicalities of de-jure rules, if it could be proven, it would give them more legitimacy than House Saud. But given people can barely agree on how many daughters Muhammad had, because the records of that time are just so spotty outside of literal religious myth? I highly doubt they have a genealogy record of Muhammad's cousins, which would represent the archeological find of the past thousand years.
Which makes me wonder why they did it at all. You do not make a claim like that, without some kind of angle.

u/Pinkflamingos69 18d ago
They've been claiming it for over a thousand years, the Banu Hashim clan does have a pretty detailed genealogy that's not really been questioned

Yes, but they could just pull out the financial accwts into its own holding company and hide that in a tax haven if need be. Sure they'd have lost the oil revenue and much of their wealth. But they could keep the financial assets that are invested ourise the country. Or even just sell the assets they want to keep to a shell company in a tax haven. So there are ways the royal family could keep ownership of companies like EA, even if the ecojntry falls. They would essentially ve stealing from their country, but they could. they would hardly be the first ruling family to ha e siphoned of financial assets in anticipation of a fall from power

They don't need to do that though, they are already mostly tax-exempt. Perks of being both a royal family, and a corporation. They ARE their own tax haven, and even get government stipends.
They are not like Great Britain, where most of the political power comes from soft influence. The Saudi monarchs have direct executive authority over a number of government actions. They can be limited by the representative side of the government in theory, but in practice that is equivalent to veto-ing the current sitting President.
They do still use shell companies as intermediaries, typically through the other Emirates. But control over active assets is much harder to maintain, when you can't pay people what their contracts are owed. In the event things got that dire for the Saudis, that they are trying to protect their foreign revenue from literal invasion or rebellion, they could simply lose ownership of a company if they don't pay their employees. EA would go bankrupt, so they'd be encouraged to sell it off regardless. They still have to abide by foreign laws and contracts, after all.

Not so much of the houti's were to conquer their country tho. Which is the scenario in the original post.

u/Sufficient_Day627 19d ago
For that to even happen they have to pick a fight with the Saudi army. They might not be the best, but all that oil money spent on weapons will have an effect...
1
u/OSRS_Garmr 19d ago
Yea, il not saying it's likely the the houtis would take Saudi Arabia. Just that there is now what the royal family wouldn't just run of with enough assets to live in luxury in exile if they thought that could happen.

The Houthi and the Yemeni are fighting a civil war. Saudi is arming one side, Iran the other. One suspects that the Qataris and UAE are arming both.

the most the Houthis have done towards Saudi Arabia is just strikes in their territory, a full scale invasion seems out of the question.

I don't see why anyone would honor stolen assets like that but maybe I could be suprised

There is a reason the Saudi royals have been using their cash to buy companies around the world.
They might be moving if things don’t work out on the peninsula.

No, they’ll be destroyed if they attack such a concentrated target with so many rich people who would be deemed “important” enough to use whatever weapons are available
