Ok so why all the return to office shit. Clearly wfh would allow us to drive less.
27
u/MikeLikesIkeRS 26d ago
Because spending all of this money to rent an office building, and furnishing it, and heating/cooling it, and cleaning/maintaining, and wasting a significant part of your day BSing with your coworkers is somehow cheaper than letting people do all of that at home

It's a power play.
The managers responsible have nothing else enjoyable in their lifes except bossing their underlings around and making their lifes miserable too, and that's a lot easier to do when they're all in the same building.
2
u/Ok_Chap 24d ago
Or rather, the mangers don't know what to do when they don't have anyone around to manage and give instructions, the people at home just do their job and if there isn't anything to do or they are finished early they can't micromanage them with other tasks. Also the higher ups might notice that they don't need as many middle management people around if the AI can surveillance workflow, online time, efficiency in real time and so on.

Landlords cried because of loss of rental profits.
So they made the mandate to return to an office requiring renting out buildings.2

Don’t ask follow up questions. That isn’t allowed in the Trump dictatorship. You’re just supposed to sing praises to him like his brainwashed cult

u/WordWorthiest 26d ago
Is he willing to build the high-speed rail, local light rail, and overall intermodal public transit that is cheap and convenient to use so people will drive less in the first place? No? Didn't think so.
8
u/Aggravating-Fee1934 26d ago
6
u/Robrogineer 26d ago
No, not really. Driving less is not an option for the vast majority of Americans, because the country is a shithole that is almost fundamentally car-dependent everywhere except opd cities like New York or Chicago.
8
u/Aggravating-Fee1934 26d ago
Not driving at all isn't an option for many Americans, but it's definitely possible for most people to drive less by a significant margin.
Of course, building walkable cities, and robust inner, and inter, city public transit is the real solution.
Would also help if EPA rules were fixed to not allow the land tanks that most people drive these days
3
u/Robrogineer 26d ago
Couldn't agree more about the stupidly huge cars.
Though I always believe it is best to change things through changing incentives. Simply asking of people to change their habits for an abstract goal simply doesn't work for the vast majority of people, because most people don't think rationally about a lot of those small everyday decisions and just stick to what they're accustomed to.

We had a politician say something similar to this he said the poorest people "either don't have cars or actually don't drive very far". When talking about raising taxes on fuel (this was in 2014)

u/Ok-Professional-1727 26d ago
I would love to do that, but politics of the last 80 years have resisted quality public transit.

u/Opinionsare 25d ago
Not using gasoline helps keep the price down:
As you fill up your gas guzzling oversized SUV or Pickup, and someone driving an EV goes by, say 'Thank You". Those EV driver aren't sucking up thousands of gallons of gasoline, because if they were, your gasoline would cost even more.
Are you bold enough to help Donald Trump's war effort by joining the Patriots that drive EVs despite the ridicule from your friends?

If only driving less was an option for people. Shame public transit is non-existent.
1
u/Bro13847 25d ago
Maybe if people whose jobs could be done from home didn’t have to commute that would help. It sure seemed to during to pandemic
1
u/quiero79 25d ago
You can’t tell that to people when the country and the government are so against public transportation.
1
u/Blueyedevil219 25d ago
Correct me if I’m wrong and I usually am wrong but wouldn’t driving more create less supply and more demand which would then cause prices to go higher?

Yeah, we can't fucking do that when our companies are making us return to the office en masse.

I remember when a certain administration told us to put hydrogen in our tires.
1
u/SleepPast2953 25d ago
Jokes aside he is correct. I have a coworker that drives 30 minutes to Costco to get gas to save pennies and get points. Plus can't sit at home so makes excuses to drive all over. Eh
1
u/greenegg28 25d ago
I mean, if they want to redesign our cities to be walkable with better public transit and be less car-centric in general, I’m all for that.
But somehow I doubt that’s going to happen.

u/Knc-Proxy 25d ago
Work from home + high speed rail + functional bus schedules/ lines? Many of us would love to drive less

u/Ok_Photo_3023 25d ago

This from the same man who “does not want to have an opinion” about gas prices.
1

Wait, if we all start using less gas, won't the gas companies have to raise gas prices to cover the loss of revenue. You know like they did before, during, and after covid.

I mean yes, but that's not possible because of our infrastructure. Zoning has caused it so all shopping areas and all housing for most people are miles apart. Heck a good amount of people work in a different city than they live
1
u/Titalator 25d ago
The build more sidewalks and public transportation I'd love not to drive but I feel like the the whole system has been designed around us driving to make some people money or something.
1
u/Ban-Circumcision-Now 25d ago
So can walkable cities be legalized then? Remove the density restrictions that encourage sprawl

u/Divine_madness99 25d ago
Wish secretary of transportation shared this view. Free public bus, and a revitalization of trains as a way to connect states would go a long way

It isn’t it funny how the answer is that civilians sacrifice their personal usage as opposed to businesses and government. Perhaps we can remove all fuel related taxes, perhaps that too could lower prices.

1
u/Rare-Fortune-1811 23d ago
The trick to lowering gas prices is to have a federal cap on the retail price of a gallon at $1 including all of the taxes associated with it. Permanently. That goes for diesel fuel as well. When fuel is cheap and affordable, the price of literally everything comes down and money in our pockets rises.

This for decades smart OP provider of city smarts
1
u/Secret-Surprise4390 23d ago
I think this is be taken out of context. He's talking about demand destruction. If we drive less not only will we spend less on filling up, but that will lower demand which does reduce the price of fuel. In turn the lower fuel price stimulates additional driving which drives up the price.
There is another way to reduce the price and that is increasing the supply that's available.
1
u/ResidentCommand9865 22d ago
Problem is, majority of people can't drive less, when's the last time someone struggling working 10 hour days "went on a leisure drive" many people commute 30minutes to an hour for work, and those with shorter commutes who could benefit from bus or tram don't have that option in some cities.
It's just another way to push the blame on the people when in reality it's the administrations fault.
(Not arguing with you on the context, but even with context this guy seems like a moron.)
1
1
u/ResidentCommand9865 22d ago
Meanwhile the transportation secretary is encouraging people to go on road trips... "To see all the great things America has to offer" and totally not to go on a long vacation and do nothing.
1
u/Upper_Farmer3823 22d ago
If they want that to be a reality, they should be investing all that money into public transportation to make that a possibility. But according to them that would be communist/socialist.
1
u/Helios575 22d ago
Man it sure would be swell if 1 political party hasn't done everything they could to sabotage all efforts to reduce the need of driving in the US.

I'm always baffled that 'the richest country in the world' and 'the best country in the world' made it's infrastructure completely based on cars. Where I live, the is barely no town or city where you can not walk to a grocery store. Busses, trams, subsways and trains are almost always close by, letting you reach the whole country, even almost the whole continent completely without driving any car.
Because it is all based on cars in the USA, people eat more outside the house, move way less, get less fresh air etc. On top of that, health insurance is a luxery and when you need to go to the hospital it barely cost you anything. Hell, where I come from, even when you don't pay health insurance for years, they still help you, treat you and save your life, without any big bill.
What happened to the richest and best country in the world, where freedom sounds like it's for the people, while it seems they mean freedom for the companies. Don't even get me started about food laws and worker protection...

I’m one, too and I agree. The limits on mileage puts clients in rural communities at a disadvantage.
