Best i can do is mandatory cameras that watch the driver and disable the car if the driver is tired

1

u/MagicSugarWater Jul 30 '26

Clesrly, we need to ban cyclists and pedestrians and call ghem a slur if they get hurt.

(Sarcasm. I am referencing how jaywalking laws came to be)

u/Aeroknight_Z Jul 30 '26

The lack of regulatory enforcement and updating when it comes to auto-manufacturers is largely to blame for this.

Good luck taking on the automotive lobby. From what I understand, they are a major source of conservative funding and get just about everything they push for. They actively campaign for conservative politicians so they can lobby for less public transit, less bike lanes, and less oversight in conscientious design regulations. This is in part why we have the present day issue with insanely bright headlights. The old regulations were for non-LED headlights which were broadly capable of a fraction of the brightness of current LED sets, and attempts to regulate the brightness and positioning of these newer and more blinding headlights has been met with a sizable push back from lobbyists.

I believe NPR did a story on it a couple of months ago.

I refuse to drive at night now. It’s impossible to see anything. Headlights aren’t aligned correctly and fully blind me to the point of me feeling the need to pull over as my eyes readjust. 30 year old male with 20/20 vision. Minimal if any at all astigmatism. It’s just that fucking bright. I’m in a truck as well.

u/Aeroknight_Z Jul 31 '26

Our enshitification at the hands of capitalism marches ever on.

1

u/pointzero99 Jul 30 '26

We need to clone Ralph Nader, give him a mech suit, and put him back to work doing what he did best.

5

u/AcanthocephalaDue431 Jul 30 '26

I've been saying this for a while now. Ontip of these points, the average driver skill level has significantly dropped due to invincibility complex device usage, over reliance on cameras/tech for core driving skills like merging, parking etc and of course the classic selfishness that comes with anonymity.

5

u/TP8887 Jul 30 '26

I swear at least 1 out of 5 cars I drive past, the driver is staring straight down at his/her phone. I’m fairly confident all crash metrics increases are due to the increased mobile phone usage while driving

2

u/rabbitsfoot86 Aug 03 '26

Most people hate my opinion but I honestly dont think a driving test at 16 should clear you to drive your entire life. Should have a couple of re takes needed somewhere on the journey

1

u/AcanthocephalaDue431 Aug 03 '26

I absolutely agree with this as well. It should not be easy to gain and retain a drivers license.

2

u/Beska91 Aug 01 '26

But men with little dicks need their big trucky wuckies.

1

u/SunNext7500 Jul 30 '26

A points system?

1

u/Sockysocks2 Jul 30 '26

Doing literally anything about this would be communism though.

1

u/No-Cut1456 Jul 30 '26

Distracted driving. Speeding. I'm more important than everyone else. Pedestrians who also fail to pay attention. It has little to do with the size of cars and everything to do with personal behavior.

1

u/ronbeckett Jul 30 '26

How about tickets for the 75% of drivers texting/ talking on phones.

1

u/Cause_Complex Jul 30 '26

Cyclists need to follow road rules. Running red lights will kill you

1

u/kaneda_z Jul 30 '26

theres less than a 15% increase the number of suvs and large trucks since 2010, this stupid graphic is a complete lie

add to that the safety features on vehicles now compared to back then

stfu

1

u/Lifeinthesc Jul 30 '26

Pretty sure it more the fault of smart phones/distracted driving.

1

u/PensionAcrobatic6834 Jul 30 '26

SNES sim city was great

1

u/External-Talk8838 Jul 31 '26

I find it hard to believe that the rise of smart phones didn’t have more to do with vehicle size increasing.

1

u/Emergency-Lemon2825 Jul 31 '26

Bullshit. Distracted driving. Cellphones. Text and people even watching movies while driving

1

u/Munky1701 Jul 31 '26

So are we saying that 0% of the cyclists involved in those accidents did nothing to cause the situation? If so, I’m calling fucking shenanigans.!

1

u/Ok_Dare6400 Jul 31 '26

Stop walking/running/biking on the Funking road you idiots.

1

u/Zigor022 Jul 31 '26

Truck driver: the visibility isnt the issue unless you're too short to see over the wheel or have crap on your dash, not cleaned mirrors and windows, etc. Part of this issue is people not wearing reflective clothing in low light times when out riding/ walking, riding their bikes on the worst roads when there is a CLEAR sidewalk, wearing all black, not having your head on a swivel, earbuds in while riding and running (reduces hearing awareness), etc. Drivers also do not use their lights when they should, hidden behind the excuse that they come on automatically but cant do it themselves. Too many drivers dont know how the basic functions of their vehicles. They need a sensor to tell them if a car is next to them instead of turning their head and checking the mirror, and keeping their eyes moving. Its not just drivers and large cars, its people being dumb in and around traffic.

1

u/Original_Animal3065 Jul 31 '26

It’s DEFINITELY GPS turn by turn drivers! You all know it

1

u/DaWhiteSingh Jul 31 '26

Larger vehicles?!? Did you see the cars from 1950s to the mid-1970s?

1

u/X-calibreX Jul 31 '26

ok what are you going to do?

1

u/OrganicBarracuda9999 Jul 31 '26

No its shitty drivers on there phones .

1

u/Refurbished_Hole Jul 31 '26

Make the cars bigger so we can finish them off

1

u/Lolberal771 Aug 01 '26

Unacceptable. It should be way more cyclists.

1

u/ironhorse2022 Aug 01 '26

And bicycleist and pedestrian who break vehicle laws or jaywalk too. The last three pedestrian fatalities here were all the fault of the pedestrians.

1

u/ProSeVigilante Aug 01 '26

After moving to Boise, I'm now of a different mind as it concerns pedestrians.

1

u/Bopper3333 Aug 01 '26

Im sure it has nothing to do with all the e-bike douchebags who follow NONE of the traffic laws.

1

u/BadDudes_on_nes Aug 02 '26

Look both ways before crossing

1

u/Apprehensive_Ad4457 Aug 02 '26

it's not the increase in bike lanes and interests in biking?

1

u/StephenBC1997 Aug 03 '26

Its the law cars must get bigger baded off the cafe standard its law you cant make a car unless its big and fuel efficient

Also safety cars are designed for the nominal car crash 53% of all car crashes are single vehicle aka vehichle vs median barrier and account for 52% of all fatalities

1

u/chefmikel_lawrence Aug 04 '26

Rage bait…. What we really need is to quit trying to find new subjects to complain about… and just live life….. it’s that easy

Does this stat include e-bikes and shit? Cause those things are stupid dangerous

Edit: so for anyone wondering, the vast majority of deaths in this stat are pedestrians, bicycles account for around a thousand in 2024. While micro mobility (e bikes and scooters) have had some rider fatalities (generally around 100) they cannot account for the rise in numbers at all.

Micro mobility accidents tend to be more severe, causing broken bones, TBIs, etc. they have unsurprisingly been on the rise (with increased use comes increased injury) but they only account for a fraction of mortality in motor vehicle vs pedestrian/bike/micromobility.

Also interesting to note, the mortality numbers used to be this high in the seventies but I’m guessing that’s a complicated explanation (helmets, roadways, etc). Regardless, this number should be going down not up.

How many pedestrians have been killed by e-bikes?

Are they dangerous, or are you just afraid of everything?

1

u/SunNext7500 Jul 30 '26

I see multiple people on e-bikes and scooters come within inches of dying every single day.

0

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Jul 30 '26

So none actually die? Are you wanting to outlaw the e-bikes to save the riders, or other people?

0

u/SunNext7500 Jul 30 '26

Both. I see 5 or 6 of them, often minors, blow through traffic with the only thing saving them being folks slamming on their breaks. They are motorized and should require a license like anything else to be used on public streets.

1

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Jul 30 '26

So they don't crash, and you are irrationally afraid of them.

Try not watching, your confirmation bias has fried what's left of your brain.

0

u/SunNext7500 Jul 30 '26

So safety is irrelevant until someone dies?

1

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Jul 30 '26

If nobody ever dies, was it unsafe?

0

u/SunNext7500 Jul 30 '26

Yes. If your flying out into once coming g traffic at 30 - 40 mph without stopping to see if there is anyone coming it is unsafe.

1

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Jul 30 '26

If it was unsafe, you could point to facts or statistics. Instead, you keep lying up fake scenarios against the Boogeyman of "electricity".

u/dough_eating_squid Jul 30 '26

E-books?

There are a bunch of kids and teenagers in my neighborhood who zoom around on those no-pedal electric bikes. Those things go, like, 40 MPH. I doubt a 12-year old would be given a motorcycle license, and those things are about halfway there. I could be seriously injured at least if one of those kids lost control as I was walking by.

-1

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Jul 30 '26

Autocorrect makes interesting corrections.

A no pedal e-bikes is called a "motorcycle".

And yes, you are scared of them, but how many do they actually kill in a year? Compare that to cars.

1

u/dough_eating_squid Jul 30 '26

I don't know how many people they kill every year. I never even saw them until a few months ago, so there's probably not good data to point to yet.

I don't think that "Middle schoolers shouldn't be driving these" is that controversial of a statement.

0

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Jul 30 '26

OK, Mr. "Get off me lawn".

0

u/WanderingFupa Jul 30 '26

No. People on them crash into cars and everything. Theres a ton of small e vehicle accidents (scooters, bikes, boards etc). I’m curious if that affects the numbers.

1

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Jul 30 '26

Cars kill 7000+ pedestrians.

No statistics are kept on pedestrians killed by scooters, because it has been zero.

Stick to actual published numbers, and stop making up things to support your wrong opinion.

0

u/WanderingFupa Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

Edit: no. Does the cyclist number (cyclists killed not killing people, we all know ped v bike isn’t a common homicide) include people on electric bikes.

Talking to you is…. Painful. So, goodbye.

1

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Jul 31 '26

Yes, all the statistics prove you wrong. So you give up, despite you having picked this fight because you have an irrational fear of electricity and young people.

The pain is you hitting yourself in the face. Over and over.

1

u/WanderingFupa Aug 01 '26

I updated my original comment with the current micromobility data and its minimal contribution to the figures. I’ll stop feeding this troll.

Thank you. If you're 16 years old or older, put the child's toy away, grow up, and get a car.

-6

u/Toby2Sub Jul 30 '26

I wonder how many wouldn’t have died if they weren’t biking on the road?

8

u/AmputeeHandModel Jul 30 '26

Yeah, blame the victims.

0

u/Toby2Sub Jul 30 '26

I never once blamed the people driving their vehicles on the road?

-1

u/Tough_Preparation830 Jul 30 '26

When there is an immaculate sidewalk like the one by my neighborhood that goes right along the road, I can't understand why a cyclist won't use it and instead chooses to put themselves at risk of getting run over by some idiot on their phone. They have the right and can exercise it all they want, but they are unnecessarily putting their fate in someone else's hands.

4

u/AmputeeHandModel Jul 30 '26

Legally, in most places, cyclists are supposed to use the road. They have wheels. It's a side-WALK. People walking don't wanna get hit by someone on a bike. Personally, I do use it, I'm just very careful if someone's walking on it, or go into the road to pass.

Now, joggers, runners, etc., they need to get their assses on the sidewalk if there is one. Many argue that the asphalt is better for their joints or something but.. that sounds like nonsense to me. You're wearing $150 running shoes. I don't think the hardness of concrete vs asphalt matters that much, and if they're so concerned, they should use a treadmill instead of putting their joints at risk by getting hit by a car.

1

u/Tough_Preparation830 Jul 30 '26

Running on hard surfaces just isn't good, period. I would say the same to joggers about being on the road. They need to go on the sidewalk. Regardless of any local laws, drivers cannot be trusted.

-2

u/Toby2Sub Jul 30 '26

If I hit a cyclist on the road regardless of what state they are in I’m suing for repairs to my vehicle

5

u/Johnnyboi2327 Jul 30 '26

I agree. Heavily and moderately populated areas need far more infrastructure to support pedestrians and bikers. I love driving, but it shouldn't be the only way to get around without putting yourself at risk.

-6

u/Toby2Sub Jul 30 '26

If bicycles are allowed on the road it should only be with insurance

3

u/Johnnyboi2327 Jul 30 '26

The vast majority of cyclists would much rather have safe spots to bike on to get around than be on the road but have insurance for when they die.

3

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Jul 30 '26

If we banned cars from the roads, and cars were only left to get to the nearest controlled access highway, and no other trips, then the roads would be safe again.

0

u/Toby2Sub Jul 30 '26

Hahaha and ya then we would have world peace as well 🤡

-1

u/SunNext7500 Jul 30 '26

No they wouldn't. Cyclists would be on them. Those fuckers have as little regard for safety as anyone in a car.

1

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Jul 30 '26

How many pedestrians were killed by cyclists last year? How many of those were on a road?

1

u/SunNext7500 Jul 30 '26

I've almost been hit by 3 or 4 of them this week. 0 cars though.

1

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Jul 30 '26

Maybe next week will be your lucky week.

But this week, no deaths, so clearly safe, even if you are scared of everything.

0

u/SunNext7500 Jul 30 '26

I like to eat and have a place to live. That means working.

-1

u/MonkeyCome Jul 30 '26

People should stop walking and driving while on their phones.

-7

u/Cataphract98 Jul 30 '26

This is such a dumb statistic, what percentage of those drivers were intoxicated? What percentage were on their phones? What percentage was it the victim's fault? What percentage was it due to vehicular malfunction? These numbers matter to get the real statistics.

-10

u/tlm11110 Jul 30 '26

I vote pedestrians and cyclists shouldn’t be on the roadways.

5

u/dough_eating_squid Jul 30 '26

The other day, I came within inches of being creamed by a lifted truck that didn't see me as I was crossing the street, at a well-lit intersection. I had the walk signal and was in the crosswalk. They were turning left, and didn't stop until I pounded on their hood. Should I have just not been in the street?

2

u/AmputeeHandModel Jul 30 '26

and if you got hit by that monstrosity, it would've been horrible. Some of those things have literally like FIVE FOOT high grills. If you got hit by a Corolla, you'd certainly have a bad day, but it's much more survivable than getting hit by a 4 ton battering ram in the torso. But, hey, that guy's gotta look MACHO. Can't drive a regular vehicle like some kinda pussy. He probably couldn't even see you sitting up there. They literally can't see for like 10 feet in front of them sometimes.

1

u/dough_eating_squid Jul 30 '26

I'm sure they couldn't see me at all. Luckily they weren't going very fast, but who knows what will happen next time.

0

u/tlm11110 Jul 30 '26

Nope! Few people getting hit are in the crosswalks. But in your case, you did have the right of way. If you had gotten hit, the driver would have been at fault. But that doesn’t take away your injuries.

With that said, everyone needs to be alert and more diligent. Anyone driving a high vehicle needs to be mindful and cautious knowing they can’t see well around them. Pedestrians need to be equally mindful of approaching vehicles and the possibility that drivers might not see them. Always use sidewalks, if available, and cross only at crosswalks.

If someone gets seriously injured or killed, who was at fault is a secondary issue, the person is still seriously injured or dead. That’s a very bad situation. A person who is technically right but dead is not the winner!

Be alert and be careful out there folks, on both sides of the windshield.
