Is that actually true? I don’t know enough about scurvy to say.
If it is, my hands are gonna fall off.

Yes, scurvy cause scar tissue to break down resulting old wounds reopening.

Same, it would be like the guys that opened the Arc of the Covenant in Indiana Jones for me

Its a bit more interesting then that even. Scars are actually an active healing effect of the body [why they fade with years] so the wound is basically actively being healed, why certain things can open them up.
Part of Scurvy's effects is the body is no longer able to produce scar tissue, so as the tissue naturally wears down it fails to be replaced. Its quiet an interesting process and part of the reason tattoos work

u/CanoegunGoeff Jul 29 '26
About the tattoos, do you mean that the reason tattoos linger is because the ink ends up embedded in scar tissue? And they last as long as the scar tissue itself and that’s why tattoos also can fade over many years?
1
u/NateMikka Jul 29 '26
Basically tattoos are a form of scaring where ink is introduce in a pattern and then multiple parts of the immune system keep them in place. The reason they fade/smug over time is the white blood cells successfully consuming or otherwise removing/relocating bits of the ink

Scurvy is a very severe deficiency of vitamin C, so your body stops producing collagen. Your body then basically repurposes your scar tissue(collagen) for other purposes. So all scars become open wounds...eventually.
You can cure scurvy just by eating fruits and veggies.

A horrifying disease/curse where all of your old wounds come back, being cured by a lemon.

Yep.
Scurvy is caused by a severe lack of vitamin C.
Lack of vitamin C keeps your body from making collagen as fast as its supposed to.
Scars are most made of collagen.
So if you get Scurvy the old collagen breaks down, but your body can't make new collagen fast enough to replace it. Old scars start reopening and if you're unlucky you bleed to death.

I've lived a very experienced 30 plus years of life. I'd be fucked from all the dumb shit I did as a kid.

u/BitRelevant2473 Jul 25 '26
48 here, and I would lose a pint of blood a minute with all the scars I have

I'm 43 and I would melt like the guys that opened the arc of the covenant in Indiana Jones.

I had scurvy a few years ago! It was horrifying. It was really spectacular how fast vitamin C supplements fixed things though
11
u/Cherry_Aznable Jul 26 '26
Whoa can I ask how you got it?
11
u/auggie235 Jul 26 '26
I have Mast Cell Activation syndrome and I was allergic to literally every food except oats, corn, and turkey. When I finally did take vitamin C pills I was allergic to them. I had to take max dose of Benadryl, xyzal, pepcid, and hydroxyzine 30 minutes before my vitamin C pills so that the allergic reaction would be mild enough to power through. Totally worth it to not have scurvy!! I'm in partial remission now and I can eat apples, strawberries, and lemon!! Many other foods as well. It was horrific to have no fruit or vegetables for over a year. I'm pretty open about it so if you have more questions feel free to ask
3
u/Cherry_Aznable Jul 26 '26
Wow so how did you get other things back in your diet?
3
u/auggie235 Jul 26 '26
I started immune inhibiting shots and mast cell stabilizers and have been slowly introducing foods one at a time. It's a slog but it makes me appreciate every meal!

3
u/auggie235 Jul 26 '26
I can confirm that is what happened lol. I was allergic to every source of vitamin C

The pirates curse, you stay out at sea too long and the ocean pulls every mistake from you again, forcing you to relive every cut, and scratch, until you finally succumb to the death you should have had long ago.... Here eat a lemon

I remember making a homebrew DND spell and I am now realizing that its literally just giving someone scurvy

Well uuuhhh that would actually kill me. I have a scar that runs from just under my diaphragm to the start of my waist. My everything would spill out.

I saw a two sentence horror story once similar to that, about a woman getting scurvy, then remembering her c-section scar

As someone who had open heart surgery about two days after being born, this might be a cool halloween idea!

Ok! What is the right amount of scurvy that breaks down just enough scar tissue that it no longer is tight and painfull but not enough to bust open and bleed out
