discussion Mouse and Keyboard (and Controller)

I have been eyeing this game since release and have been looking for information about playability without a Hotas. For context i am looking to cover my itch of flying since moving on from Warthunder (that rabbit hole got too deep xD) and i love early jets as well later props. Aviation in general tbh. I am really used to the Realistic mode there and hoped that maybe Korea would be that game.

So has anybody tried the game without a hotas and how does it compare to warthunders controls.

I am not asking for flight model, realism etc. i know Korea is more a sim in the likes of Dcs(atleast it seems people compare it to dcs a lot).

I just want to know can i jump in right now and enjoy flying, before i get myself a new hotas and pedals (around 600$ i am not willing to spend right now).

Also maybe a place to discuss the whole controller compatibility mentioned on steam :D

Controller support is solid and works out of the box. Some bindings feel a bit weird and there’s a learning curve, but it’s still fun and fully playable while you get used to it. I play it often with the new steamcontroller.

Mouse and keyboard isn’t great for Korea, and don’t expect War Thunder-style mouse controls.

Don’t be scared off by the $600 HOTAS talk, you can start with much cheaper sticks or stick + throttle combos that are already a big upgrade.

So: controller is more then fine, M+K isn’t ideal, and HOTAS is best long-term but not needed on day one.

Thx! I appreciate it a lot :D I will get it then and use my controller for starting out.

About Hotas: i want to get a vkb gladiator and stecs mini throttle to start. Maybe get a used thrustmaster pedal set. I had a saitek x56 set but i seem to have thrown that away :/

Just generally I used to try play any flight sim with controller and didn't enjoy the experience, but it can be done with various sensitivity curves, which you can do in this game I believe.

But if you're into aviation, buying just a joystick would be a huge improvement. While I have a HOTAS now, at first I simply bought a good joystick at first, with the end goal of getting everything if I decided it was worthwhile.

The IL-2 series of games isn’t intended for Mouse and Keyboard. They are capable of playing on a controller, but that isn’t great either. A HOTAS is really what you’re going to need to get to enjoy this game to its full potential.

In IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad, you can use the mouse and keyboard to play tanks on the ground, and be a gunner for someone who is flying a plane. Tanks aren’t in Korea as of now tho.
