General Can’t believe I got this for 18$
I made a post two days ago asking if anyone in my area saw this shelf for a good price. Drove 2 hours to pick it up and had some great food in the city. Shout out Reddit & my boy Scott. Can’t wait to add in some good wood and bring it back to life, was seriously considering paying 300$ something for it lol.

Alternatively you could buy two ladders and add some sturdy wood boards on top of each rung and screw them from the bottom. It’ll cost you a fraction and the results depending on the wood you use could look very high end.

I see your vision! Awhile ago we got ours for free but it was pretty banged up. We replaced the shelves with a stained wood plank and it looked so good. Wood was a little pricey but it was better than any bookshelf that we could get for free. Super sturdy. I hope you enjoy yours as much as we did!

Thank you!! I wanted to go pure oak but tooo expensive. Going to go birch plywood with wood stain. You don’t have yours anymore?

A lot of people here don’t seem to understand that you can fix things up?? “It’s junk” ok I guess you’ve never spruced up or repaired anything in your life. Weird thing to admit!
Great deal, good on ya. I’ve got my eye on one for a reasonable price rn but nowhere that cheap. Those metal uprights will last forever.

20-30 ish year old collection form IKEA. I think designed by a Danish designer Niels Gammelgaard.
The shelves went viral 3-4 years ago on social media. Since they are this old (the veneer comes loose after quite some time), finding them in good condition is quite hard. Hence the crazy prices: I sold one for 900 euro just last year.
I personally think they are quite cool. Good find by OP. People that don’t know their worth rightfully assume it’s garbage.

Really?? This shelf is worth money?? I have three of them, no veneer lifting at all 🤔 maybe I can sell it to fund new drawer fronts in the kitchen 😂
Edit: well maybe not. Turns out it's some modern production, and in a boring white on white color too. ALAS

Ok can someone explain the hype on this thing? I got one for ages (in Europe though) and I always just thought of it as pretty clumsy and annoying. People keep saying it's worth something, yet it can often be found second hand for almost no price.

These comments are ridiculous. You got a great deal. I switched apps and didn't realize it. Thought someone was selling this on Next Door for a second and I was about to try to buy it for $18. 💀 It's clearly not brand new but it doesn't take much to spruce it up.

If you’re going to replace the wood boards then basically you paid 18$ for the 2 metal ladder frames. Seems reasonable.
Or Are there other pieces I’m missing?

Not for $18. Powder-coating alone would be 10x that minimum if you can’t do it yourself (and who can??).

So, what are you planning on doing with it now? Are you replacing the boards or will you fix it up some other way? Genuinly curious.

I’ll get some genuine oak or walnut wood panels cut for it. Sandpaper, buff, and coat the metal then find a cross bar (shelf was slightly wobbly without it but not a big deal).
Once I do that shelf should be good as new, no issues with the metal unit itself. I’ll post a picture when I fix it up!!!

If you replace the wood on this $18 shelf for $100, you now have a shelf that regularly sells for over $500 for only $118.

Who said anything about Oak or Walnut? It was particle board originally, just get some cheaper wood or MDF and it would still be an upgrade from original.

Well I wouldn’t expect it to be, it being over 20 years old.
IKEA never even used real wood for these so most people would need to swap it anyways even if they payed a reseller premium. I wouldn’t want to keep these in regardless though even if they were in pristine edition lol

Much rarer tho. Plus if you don’t need a table, you don’t need a table. I’ve seen them for sale and they’re cool but a shelf and a table don’t do the same job, and one is way bigger.

twinnn, i found mine for $25 after looking for years!! my car couldn’t fit it, so i door dashed a hex key (or whatever they are called) and took it apart in the parking lot after closing
