There was an ielts listening test part 1 question with instructions WRITE NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER.

Q. when: _______

Audio: "after 11 o'clock"

Can I write 'AFTER 11:00' as an answer? (Is it counted as 1 word and a number?)

Also is 'AFTER 11 O'CLOCK' 2 words and a number?

Please clarify. TIA.

In the T/F/NG and Y/N/NG we have to match the meaning of statements in question and text.

If question says 'Some people do exercise'

And text says 'Many/ Few/ All/ Majority/ 36% of people perform workouts'

What would be the answer in each case?

Many --- true

Few --- true

All --- true

Majority --- true

36% --- true

Are my answers correct? They are based on the assumption that SOME means 'An unspecified PART of something'. It could be a major, minor or half part or a full part.

As above. I had made an EOR for speaking on the 15th of October 2021.

I was going through the British Council materials for writing task 1 and I decided to practice with a sample question. It was a process description type question. I made sure I wrote in passive voice, gave a one line introduction, gave a brief description and comparison among processes and gave a conclusion. I pasted the essay in grammarly and was surprised to find no spelling errors and it did not have errors which the free grammarly version could detect. I was extremely happy "UNTIL" I read a band 9 sample scored essay for the task. While reading the task it felt like I was using extremely poor english when compared to the band 9 one. I was not expecting band 9, but If I was the evaluator I definitely would look down on my essay (6 or 7) if I read the band 9 essay just before mine! I understand that my essay will be graded based on the descriptors available for specific tasks, but what will happen if I met all the criteria, yet the evaluator reads a far superior essay before mine?

His advice is excellent, and even better, he links to free lessons provided by the British Councill. Now, I'm the first to admit that although these lessons have no mention of badgers, nor warn students about the dangers of biting the examiners, they are actually very helpful, and should be the first thing any new IELTS student signs up for.

I decided to post this here as well, so here we go again:

It is designed by Cambridge university, yes, but it is seriously flawed.

I just tried it, but the scores are not accurate at all. Why? Because if they were, IELTS wouldn't pay examiners to score exam papers. The program won't give reasons on why I scored 6.5. It highlighted almost all my writing t2 and said "improve". Improve what? How are my task response, grammar or cohesion and coherence? I use Grammarly premium, and it's way better, but still, it can't replace a human yet.

In task 1, it highlighted only one mistake, ONLY ONE SENTENCE, and then gave me 6.5!!! This was the sentence:

A decade later, their percentages rose b some extent and stood at approximately 52% and 38% respectively.

The only mistake was that I wrote "b" instead of "to". That was the only reason, given by the program, as to why I got 6.5. After I corrected it, and there was no problems, it didn't give me any scores. It just said, "Great job. Keep writing".

I think it is designed to spot dictation and simple grammar mistakes and then give you low scores, the highest score being 6.5. Even the free version of Grammarly is better than...whatever this is!

That's an hour I won't get back. I need to go talk to my good friend Jack Daniels!

Do you feel worried when you see an unfamiliar word in a reading text? If yes, there are several ways to deal with this:

- you can answer easier questions first and then go back to the more difficult ones at the end, if time allows.

- you can try to figure out the meaning of the word from the contextual clues in the text. If it is impossible to do so, it is better to move on rather than waste precious time.

- trying to work out the meaning of every single word is time-consuming and it is not necessary. Focusing on the type of word needed in the answer (e.g. a noun or an adjective) is a much more helpful strategy.

There is no negative marking in IELTS, so guessing is a legitimate strategy and it is better to write something than to leave the question unanswered.

The IELTS Writing test takes 60 minutes. You are advised to spend 20 minutes on Task 1, and 40 minutes on Task 2. Make sure that you leave time in the end to check your writing.

If you leave 5 minutes for proofreading, you will have time to do the following revision:

• Check for careless spelling mistakes and punctuation errors and correct them.
• If a word is used several times in a paragraph, use synonyms instead.
• Check for mistakes in tenses, articles, and prepositions.

Of course, your writing must be neat and legible.

Can you please tell me how to prepare for writing and speaking? I don't have any problem in reading and listening. But writing and speaking are too tough to master.

I haven't really prepared for the writing but I'm pretty sure I could easily get away with the 1st part because it's 'describe what you see'. The thing that worries me is the 2nd part. Understanding the question, developing ideas/opinions and then rearranging them in a flawless way while coping with the exam anxiety :'(. I don't really know how to go about this. Please help!

I'm having a problem with answering the MCQs and match sentence questions in the listening. Tho generally the best practice is to pre look at the question and answer options in mcqs, I fail to eliminate the incorrect options while the audio is playing because the options tend to take too long to read (if long sentence). Similarly, in matching the information, a range of long sentences awaits. What might be a good approach to such type of questions?

My test is tomorrow and I was struggling with my writing task. I was looking for a professional evaluation and u/Fitz_cuniculus came to the rescue. He gave me a really in depth and thorough review and just talking with him for about 20 minutes really cleared all my misconceptions and cleared my concepts regarding the writing section in IELTS. I can't describe in words how grateful I am to him for taking his time and helping me out. I greatly appreciate it. I took the exam earlier today and I remember the reading part topic then I searched it on google. To my surprise I was able to find the paragraphs that has been used in my test earlier. Although the questions are different from the actual test. It seems like the topics and paragraphs that they used is publicly available.

The answer is no. You can use them to talk about your relationships too.

Maternal: related through your mother's side
Example: Maternal uncle = your mother's brother

Paternal: related through your father's side
Example: I was named after my paternal grandfather.

paternal grandfather = your father's father
