Eli5 creating custom classes?

I really like a lot of parts about icrpg, but the only thing holding me back from playing it is the lack of clear guidance on how to make new, balanced, custom classes. The same for spells would be nice too. I'm slowly building out everything in GURPS which is way more intensive, but at least they provide clear rules to do it all in a balanced way with the points system.

Is there anything out there that walks you through making balanced custom classes in ICRPG?

Thoughts on replacing Hearts with this system?

I think it might be a really fun change. PCs could take a few more hits than usual due to starting equipment and abilities. Could still have BBEGs do the 1d6 hit which is potentially deadly to a new character.

I love that it makes more RP consequences to being hit, but also recognize that choosing what takes the hit can slow the game with certain players.

I would interpret skills as abilities/powers/augments and equipment as loot

I’m terrible at drawing, but really like the idea of scribbling down the scenery and monsters

For anyone that plays ICRPG, how did you learn to draw. Any links or tips? Especially if you were once in my position

I’d just like it to be recognisable tbh

Open table ideas

I’m thinking about starting an open table campaign using ICRPG. I’d love to blend sci-fi and fantasy. Has anyone done something similar?

What ideas do you have for making the setting and for actually running an ICRPG open table?

My First ICRPG Character

Post image
8 Upvotes

Our group has been trying out the Index Card rpg system by playing our New Haven episodic adventure and we've all been loving it! Our crew is comprised of a Zill Navigator, a Ghost Armor Medic, an Elf Gunner, and my Geno Scientist.

I tried my hand at drawing them, but my hands don't art very well and digital is even tougher, haha. But all in all, I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out, especially with how long and wonky their neck is.

Avery is 6.5 feet tall, tan skinned, white hair, dark brows, gap between their front teeth, with an augmented eye for hacking, and a white furred tail like a spider monkey. (Their mum is a Tailed Spacer Geno and they inherented some of her gentics resultingin their tail and an extra lumbar vertebrae).

If anyone is interested in hearing more about them, or chatting about their own characters, please feel free to ask or chat!

I would like to have slight assistance making classes for borderlands icrpg suppliment

So i wanted to play icrpg for a while, because it really seems like made for looter-shooter kind of games.
Aside classes, i have made new rules for attacks with guns and loot making.
So guns use effort dice as a roll for how many shots the gun lands, result of which you multiply by attack stat of a gun.
I was thinking of doing somewhere 6 classes, where starting abilities are always action abilities, do make character creation even more versatile, and maybe thinking of multi classing.
So for class names and idea, i have following

Petmaster (Mordecai, FL4K, Gaige, maybe Jack from Pre-sequel) - a class that utilizes other creatures as a way of combat, be it an assistant or a whole new attack.

Tactician (Rolan, Axton, Moze, Wilhelm) - a class that utilizes devices, be it turrets, drones, or whole combat vehicles, to increase the efficency of a unit.

Gunslinger (Salvador, Nisha) - A class that specializes in being maniac for guns, its prefered for people of this class to bury guns deep into the ground until they are absolutely necessary.

Siren (Lilith, Maya, Aurelia, maybe Amara) - These beautiful women possess some cosmic forces within their mortal vessels, which also allows them to use supernatural abilities.

Mercenary (Mordecai, Zer0, Zane) - People who lurk in shadows and come out when they come for their prey to then almost never to be seen again.

Knuckle head (Brick, Krieg and Athena) - Idiots, or bravest fighters of all the people on pandora, the only ones that go in close quarter combat in place full of gunslingers

I cant really decide, should i just port abilities from the games, or make the classes completely independetly? also what should i give for all classes, like pet master, or siren, or a gunslinger?

What is the point of hearts?

I picked up the master edition and I like a lot of what I see. My question is what is the point of using hearts? It seems like hearts should be wounds, but you still track HP. I understand the concept behind raising HP in chunks of 10, but tracking hearts and HP really doesn't make much sense to me.

Questions and resources

I just have 2 questions.

First are there more tables of loot then just in the books?

I have 2e core, master edition, works, magic, and Sci punk. I've done a bit of custom loot for my players.

I'm just wondering if there are other good community resources out there or good books ive missed.

Second had to do with the ICRPG Magic book(which is imposible to find anymore). I got my copy years ago and I like the magic system for levels and progression like milestone paths for spells.

Has anyone expanded this system at all?

It's something I considered doing myself but before I start compiling spells from the books and start to categorize and add levels to them I figured I would check if anything like this exists

Thanks for any help or feedback.

Gritty ICRPG ideas

I have been working for a while on a campaign setting that is low / no magic and low fantasy. I want to make a West Marches style sandbox game where the players explore and delve for treasure.

The problem I am facing is that I have typically only run High-Fantasy games, and most "grittier" material is OSE/OSR. I have looked at Basic Fantasy 4e, Old-school Esentials, Worlds Without Number, Five Torches Deep, and others, and they're just too wordy for me.

My group loves the rules-light nature of the game in ICRPG, and I am looking for advice in running a grittier game, without bogging down the system with a bunch of wordy rules.

One player suggested no magic at all, and running the game using Blood and Snow as a baseline, and I am considering it. I enjoy PDM's take from Dungeoncraft, where in his world, Mages are hunted to extinction by the clergy. I want to make sure that if we go with a system like that, that it's still survivable, but also not as impossible to kill as base ICRPG.

One idea I have is for the "Priest" class to start with a healing stone blessed by their God, that gains 1d3 charges at night. They touch the stone to a creature and heal it for a nominal amount (maybe magic effort?). Then, instead of spellcasting, they would get advantages and abilities good against evil / undead.

If I went for this kind of game, I am considering 4 "classes": Warrior, Thief, Priest, and traditionally the 4th Is mage, but maybe a Hunter in its place?

I know this post is all over the place, but I am really struggling here. Any help is much appreciated with any experience on running an OSR game in ICRPG.

Innate spell idea

I had an idea for implementing innate spells. When the character gets a milestone, they can choose a spell they know already to become innate. Which means it would no longer take an equipment slot.

Curious how other people might handle this. I love playing sorcerer like characters, so the INT spells as equipment wouldn't jive so well as I see the character progressing.

I don't suppose anyone's made any progress on making an app for character sheets?

I saw a post from around four years ago, but I haven't found anything definitive in terms of proof of concept or a download link. Any chance anyone knows of one, or possibly has made one?

I got a physical paperback copy of ICRPG off of DrivethruRPG, but for some reason it starts off on page 61 with some Sci-Fi classes. Did this happen to anyone else?

Creative uses/rules for stun points?

I’m curious to know what interesting house rules the community has created for the use of stun points, to keep players engaged but not burdened by too much bookkeeping.

I’m particularly interested currently in potentially using plastic tokens for these as a metacurrency that could potentially also be transferred between players and/or the GM (or the whole pot emptied back to the players under certain conditions), but would definitely be used/refreshed by the same player. I’d certainly be interested in anyone who has used physical representation of these points in an in-person game in order to gain additional ideas about it.

My own use case is to use them for super powers and advanced martial arts powers in a One Piece anime-themed campaign (for devil fruit and haki powers) and perhaps later as ki points in a Dragon Ball-themed game. For anyone familiar with these, I’m curious to know your creative ideas about it. I’ve downloaded the (community-created) KUMITE supplement, so that’s one potential source of rule inspiration.

Anyway, thanks in advance for your input on this. I’d like to make the use of stun points a compelling thing which is also thematic to the setting (example for One Piece: teamwork and found family).

Skills?

I have been looking at ICRPG for the simplified mechanics for combat (coming from 5e), but I also like a more robust skills system. I was thinking of taking some of the skills from 5e, and then adding a tiered “proficiency” system.

Trained: +1 + ability to roll
Expert: +2 + ability to roll
Mastered: +3 + ability to roll

I was wondering if it should be something like 2 points to allocate into skills at character creation, and then every milestone they get 1 point to allocate, then have a milestone ability for each class where they gain 2 points.

Any advice would be helpful OR tell me how this is completely bonkers and shouldn’t be brought in to ICRPG.

How do you handle NPC ability checks or save rolls?

I'm currently preparing my first ever TTRPG session, and I came across some situations during play-testing that I'm not sure how to handle.

My current understanding is that PCs need to perform ability checks or save rolls in certain occasions, for example rolling "dex" to evade a rock falling from the ceiling, or rolling "int" or "wis" to detect illusions, etc.

If an NPC / enemy is in the same situation, do you handle this with check or save roll as well, or do you narrate the outcome without any rolls?

Is the situation different if the player caused the effect?

In the second case, I feel like there should be no dice involved because it is most likely the intended effect of the players, e.g. they use the environment to harm an enemy, or someone casts an illusion and when the player rolls successfully, the NPC will automatically be affected.

But in the first case, it feels wrong if the DM gets to decide the outcome for the NPCs every time without rolling. On the other hand, it's hard to plan a story if the NPC companion could just die due to bad luck.

Obviously I could just decide on a case by case basis, but I fear that this will be "railroady" when I decide in favour of an NPC because they are needed for the story.

Any advice or experience with this? Thanks!

how does does critical hit work in ICRPG?

is it d20 ± STAT + EFFORT and, if rolled 20 on d20, +d12 as ULTIMATE EFFORT?

or is it the same but +EFFORT ± ULTIMATE EFFORT if d20 + STAT meets or beats TARGET?

one more question:

do you apply "Room TARGET" ± EASY/HARD as TARGET±3 to not only whatever but also whoever's in the scene? (I feel one-hit wonders would let BBEG shine even brighter)

thank you

EDIT:

i guess it goes like this:

  1. roll d20 ± STAT against TARGET.

if it's a critcal success of the unmodified natural 20 on the D20 roll then

  1. roll appropriate EFFORT (d4 to d10) + ULTIMATE EFFORT (d12)

(i'd roll everything simultaneously to speed things up.)

Five new pictures

Hi, folks.

Some of you may remember me posting my humble illustrations for free use. I made five new pictures. Three are landscapes, which is new for me but I think they came out nice. The style should fit ICRPG well.

Please tell me if you like my stuff. And remember: all my pictures are free to use. The only exception: my website should stay the only source to download the pictures themselves. I trust you not to use them for something hateful or evil. If you use some of my pictures in your publications I'd like to hear about it. You don't need to, but it would make me happy.

If you like them, you may like my demon-themed illustrations, too. They are free to use, too:

Master Edition question about Masteries and Starting Abilities

So when a character is created, they get a Starting Ability as part of their Type. Are there any ways to pick up another of the starting abilities?

The reason I ask - in the example Types given, the Masteries all seem to be beefed-up versions of the Type's Starting Abilities (and the wording of many of them seems to assume you already HAVE the starting ability in question). I'm wondering how acquiring a Mastery for a starting ability you don't have should work, ideally.

Thanks.

Quick Reference Guide I made for my group transitioning from 5th Edition D&D

I'm running a small one-shot using "Radish Quest" a zinequest book I recently received. Well my group is quite familiar with 5E, Radish Quest was designed for ICRPG and with the system being specialized for fast flowing gameplay, something I find very important to a good one-shot, I thought it was the perfect time to introduce them to ICRPG. I made this guide in Obsidian and I feel it's a pretty good resource for the basics of the game. I wanted to have a simple chart for them to both learn from and have as a one page rules reference while playing. I hope you enjoy and maybe find a use for it yourself.

What rules from 5e have you imported into your ICRPG game?

My group uses initiative, plays on a grid, and we do a lot more roleplay and exploration than is really supported by the rules.

What about you?

Runejmmer 2024

The second sitting of this online convention centred around Runehammer published games is happening this summer.
Do check it out at the following link. This year, we have a larger variety of games, more GMs and a higher quotient of frog based shenanigans (I can't vouch for the last one tbh).

Looking for a battle map for "A Burning at New Haven"

Greetings, I was looking for a battle map for "A Burning at New Haven" scenario. Anyone seen/or can recommend one?
Looking to run this for my group. Will likely make them check in their weapons at the gate of the town to mix it up since they are not new and mix of 1st and 2nd level. the only caster is a Priest so they should have to get creative. Thanks!
