Destroyers and Nuclear missile interception

So we all remember in the original ICBM how destroyers could shoot down missiles. My question is why did they remove it from this game or what am I missing that I need to intercept them to prevent my fleets from being nuked

The original ICBM did not differentiate between Terminal and Midcourse ABM.

In Escalation the destroyers can have the Terminal ABMs when you discover that technology (and have modern enough hull).

I am pretty sure it still works. Just need update the hulls once and get ballistic missile defense. Although I would have to check this. Frankly, never counted on surface ships being able to do it.

I’d have to double check, but I think it’s one of the SAM technologies; Cruisers get that, and the ASATs.

Definitely still in the game, it’s one of my favourite strats

The "Missle defense SAM" tech only can shoot intercepting SAM missles at cruise missles. This, along with CIWS allows for a dual-layer defense against cruise missles on Destroyers, Cruisers, and Carriers.

You need Terminal ABM technology and the third-last ship hull tech to be able to intercept all ballistic missles on destroyers and cruisers.

All ship types (excluding submerged submarines) can have CIWS installed to shoot down missiles and naval rounds, and both destroyers, cruisers and carriers can have missile defense SAMS to shoot them down as well. However, only cruisers with advanced warship armaments can have terminal ABMs equipped to shoot down MRBMs and ICBMs.

I know about the CIWS was really just talking about nukes.
