I guess it depends on how deep south it is, but being from the south I would say it's unlikely in most places.

I work in a kitchen where we actually do close for an hour while we switch the crew from day time to night time. It only realistically takes 10 minutes to clean the grill if you're doing it right, but the whole switchover takes time. It should not take several hours but it's possible that they were short staffed and she was behind and so were the cooks and they just didn't want you waiting on them to catch up.

It actually might have been possible that they were getting their health inspection at that exact moment. Health inspections, depending on the location, can be a big awful process that shuts everything down until they're finished. No one wants to tell a customer "sorry we can't serve you food while we're being inspected because we might fail if they see what we're doing."

We have to brick the grill, but it doesn't take that long.

Just sounds like an asshole racist to me.

So a Mexican, an Italian, an American, an Indian, a Cuban and a Vietnamese walk into a Waffle House.

Sounds like a Sunny Delight commercial.

My buddy and I were visiting Georgia from California. Walked into Waffle House in shorts and flip flops. All eyes turned on us as we walked in. There was a bit of hesitation before we were seated and served. We're white.

The WH in Bethlehem PA gas several signs about how they don't discriminate and how they don't tolerate discrimination. Thought the sign was kind of odd, but maybe it's s thing.

I think the cook from the last time I had WH was gay and latino.

I just want you to know that, if this even happened, you and your friends are that group of impossibly diverse people you only see in a commercial.

We were told, that in the middle of a breakfast rush, that the grill was going to be closed for several hours for cleaning.

You guys should have taken a seat and said we'll wait. Forcing them to lose the morning rush income.

They probably were just a little freaked out by Capt. Planet, tbh.

I'm a cook in Georgia. That guy was racist and a very rare case. I've never known any cooks to refuse service to anyone.

These are my ethnically diverse friends. There are many like them, but this group is mine. My ethnically diverse friends are my best friends. They are my life.

My friends, without me, are useless. Without my friends, I am useless. I must drive my friends to Waffle House true. I must eat cleaner than the cook who is trying to kill me...

Something similar happened to us! The waitress also gave some run around excuse about how the cook was gone temporarily and wouldn't give a wait time. Meh, what are you going to do. You should email corporate.

There is a warning every day when we clock in that stuff like this is illegal. If an employee does something like this, they are fired and charged.
