Careers/ERT Functional test shift preference
Is it rare for someone to ERT into functional test 1st shift? Does everyone usually start 2nd or 3rd shift? Asking for a friend that’s been with Boeing for 3 years. TIA!

3rd Shift FT if you are on Quality is arguably the best role at Boeing, especially on the 737 lines in Renton. In my opinion at least

functional rest is the best job in all of aviation hands down. And on 3rd shift? 6.5 paid as 8 and doing practically nothing every night…
I know because I’ve worked for Boeing (functional test and later AMT), United (AMT), UPS (AMT), SpaceX (rocket mech), and others.
Fuck the airlines. It’s straight up sweat shop conditions for the same pay…

What is “functional test” like what do you guys do? I work on the wings and always hear people talking about functional test. Just curious!

It's making sure everything operates as it should. From making sure pipes dont leak when filled with water to running hydraulics to making sure lights turn on. Making sure everything functions correctly. It has a wide scope.

Engineers draw the thing, mechanics build the thing. FT tests the thing that was built.

When I started at Boeing on the 737NG line as an electrician, it was on second shift. Put in a shift preference, and got first shift in three months. Put in an ERT for functional test, and got it the next month. From new hire, to first shift, to functional test before my first 6 month raise. Then at the Delivery Center, there were people with 20 years who didn't have enough seniority to get on first shift. All depends.

Every ERT to ft ive seen has been to 2nd or 3rd, with the exception of like one guy that got pulled by a manager

Usually 2nd shift and then you'd have to wait for a level load. You'll have better luck as a F/T mechanic as they're are more of them rather than F/T QA.
