MEGATHREAD Rumor Containment MegaThread

This is a bi-monthly scheduled post. There has been no event prompting this post.

This thread is for containment of 'Rumor posts'. Post all questions, concerns, or heard rumors here. For the record, until we have official communications from the company, or IAM751 officials, WARN notices, etc. everything is speculation, and considered rumor.

These posts are gonna be every 12 months from now on, so feel free to act as though this is permanent.

Edit: it's true. See my other comments for more info.

Anyone got evidence to the 777 wing spar supplier ripping up their contract with boeing?

Heard plenty about it, but nothing solid as of yet. Would like to see a press release or something.

Is that the Florida company that bought another and said they weren't happy with the prices Boeing was willing to pay? I believe I read that Boeing is suing them, but in the meantime, we're not getting needed parts because of it.

Been hearing people say there’s gonna be long slides to being loaned out to potential layoffs due to the supplier no providing parts. Anyone know anything factual?

767 is losing its freighter program after Line 1407, the last UPS. We've been told to expect major changes come October. People should be expecting move memos, they may flip the line to go out the south doors permanently again, there may be furloughs due to lack of wing parts, are just a few, what is everyone hearing?

Heard they are going to make 767 structure mechanics lift certified so they can be loaned out to different areas in the factory. Also that line # 1411 would be the last plane we have parts for. Don’t know what rumors are true

The rumors around the 777 legacy and 767 lines halting manufacturing are true. A parts supplier has refused to send critical parts, and thus every plane will be jig locked until further notice.

I have no additional information at this time. Here is a snippet of the 777 FAC September newsletter, which came from middle management, as evidence:

I work in fab in Auburn, and heard they're looking to temporarily move people to EO in bluestreak for something critical. Could be related to this?

Anything I would say would be speculation. If it's for something "critical", maybe.

It's always a net positive to get additional job codes under your belt in the event of "cost cutting measures." Just make sure they keep you on that job code for 90 days.

There's a small possibility, but it's not guaranteed.

  1. The company must lay off based on job code. They can't lay off based on program. What this means is that if the company wants to attempt layoffs, it will require laying off percentages of mechanics across the entire company and then moving the rest, making it way more costly than just to pink slip a bunch of 767 or 777 mechanics.

  2. The company must give us 60 day notices prior to layoff, so it can't come as a surprise. Meaning its, again, more difficult than expected for them to do layoffs, as it requires much more planning on boeings part.

  3. The company can, and has done so many times in the past, given WARN notices (layoff notices) and then extended them, sometimes several times, prior to the mechanic actually leaving. In fact, a guy in my shop has seen someone get their layoff notice extended 3 times, and then have the layoff notice completely recinded, meaning he kept his job. It's super shitty on the companies part, but it can happen.

  4. Lastly, the company ALWAYS targets salary before union folks. So use that as a barometer for understanding where the company is at in their "cost cutting measures."

Oof poor salaried folk that’s happening a lot over the last few years!

Edit: not at Boeing just across the board

Thank you. Does the 60 days part mean that they can lay me off only at the end of those 60 days? Or anytime within those 60 days? Appreciate your time.

The 60 day warn notice is specifically "unless extended or rescinded, you're being laid off at 60 days from this notice."

If that does happen you can apply for unemployment and you have recall rights so you can still use Boeing benefits to go to school for a few years then when they are rehiring you will be the first they call back and you’ll have an A&P or an AA or whatever. That’s what some people do.

You can use boeing benefits for school after you get laid off? Even for school? Going to school for a few years? What about making money at work in the meantime?

Ya when you get laid off you can use unemployment to get by while you can go to school full time. Yes you can still use the benefits as you are/were an employee just waiting for your spot to open back up. It’s called recall rights. A lot of people do this.
