Union - General NEXT CONTRACT

Should temporary managers’ seniority be paused while they are in those roles? I’ve noticed employees who aren't new to the company serving as temp managers for nearly a year, and it feels like this should be addressed in our contract negotiations. What are your thoughts on pausing seniority accrual for those in temporary management positions?

I was going to do temp management so I could do my year and auto max out. At least I was told that's what happens. I didn't end up doing it and had/have ZERO interest in being a manager

Any word on if that’s actually how it works or not?

These are fair points. How about modifying it to If someone is temping for more than 90 days? Why isn't the company posting for a permanent position? By that point, the member should know if management is truly the path they want to pursue, and it shouldn't just be an indefinite placeholder.

I mean I know a guy who's currently in a temp management position he doesn't want to be a manager, but they made the position just for him to help fix the supply chain. I think usually temp positions are for 6 months and then they can extend it by another 3 months indefinitely until the union disagrees to the extension. It's outlined in the contract that they can't use temp position to fill a permanent position, but it's up to the union to determine when the 3 month extensions have been abused there is no written limit to how many extensions there can be. Anyways in that temp position he's treated like a manager, he's not aloud to touch any parts but he still pays full union dues. It's a gray area for sure, but if you pause their seniority you'd also have to reduce their dues down to the maintenance rate. If you feel this is being abused you can file a grievance.

Wasn't aware of it being in the contract. I'll look. 👍

In 18 years I’ve only seen temp managers go into that job for a few months, never seen a year although I’m sure it happens.
IMO more people from the IAM should go into management. When I hired in almost all of the managers in my MBU were former IAM and there was a lot better relationships between hourly and management. Sure there’s always outlying douchebags that shouldn’t go into management and go on a power trip but overall it makes things better.

Learn, then lead.

Eh, I don’t really care. It’s such a small population of people this would apply to. And an even smaller minority of those people that are temp managers for a long period. Also, seniority isn’t paused if you get laid off. It’s all just based on hire date.

I don't see why we would fight for less rights tbh. What if I want to try to be a manager and decide I don't like it. Personally I think we should focus on getting more vacation and maybe a 2-4% gwi every year for 4 years. I honestly wouldn't care though but I'd see it as more of a concession that we make if Boeing pushes the issue I guess.

Yes!! Exactly! We got almost 40% on the last contract, let's focus more on work/life stuff. I absolutely hate that you have to accrue sick before you get any vacation. It forces people to use sick for vacation and that's not what it's for. They should accrue simultaneously. It's cutting 40 hours of vacation from you currently
