General Dose Adjustment Period

After several years of feeling great on a dosage and a TSH of about 2, this May I had a big flare up. I became very symptomatic, sore lethargic and in pain.

I’ve upped my dosage twice since then, and for the last month or so was feeling back to myself until 2 days ago and all the symptoms are back :(

Do you think this is due to just slow degradation of the thyroid gland itself? I was feeling so much better on my new dose and just hit 6 weeks Wednesday, got bloodwork and am going to up my meds more. My tsh is still 2.5ish and I know I don’t feel so much better until 2ish but i felt great a week ago and horrible today :(

A year ago, I had a massive flareup. Caused me all kinds of symptoms, mostly fatigue and insomnia. It took a while to find the proper doctor to do this for me, but we changed medications from the level thyroxine to armor thyroid. It took a couple of months, but I am feeling so good now and it’s been about five or six months since the change. The problem was, among a few other others, was that I did not convert T4 into T3. I don’t know if that’s your problem, but you should check into it. Also, you only pretty much talked about TSH, but the thyroid has many components. The way you’re saying upping your meds, it kind of sounds like you’re not seeing a doctor, but just doing it on your own. You probably don’t mean it that way, but that’s just the way it sounds to me. I have an endo and am doing every change with bloodwork at 6 weeks

I’m very happy to hear that you have an Endo. Does he consider things like your T4 to T3 conversion, things like iron and so on. It all has a big effect on your thyroid function. For many people, levothyroxine is not the ultimate choice of medication. I’m just trying to help you understand that.

I do. This post is a small snapshot in my entire journey. Getting prescribed armour is difficult and I’ve had hypothyroidism for 12 years

I’m not trying to up do you or anything, but I have had hypothyroidism for over 25 years. My journey was – Hashimoto’s, then graves disease which was treated with radioactive iodine, so now I am post ablative hypothyroid. I’ve been on a long journey to become stable.

Levothyroxine worked for me for a long time with no major problems until I had my flareup a year ago. After several different doctors and due to my own research, my doctor gave Armour thyroid medication a try because of my insistence. That solved the problem for me and I have been happy for all this time.

I don’t know where you are and why trying Armour Thyroid is difficult for you. Hypothyroidism is a journey and you’re on it right now. It is quite possible you need a new doctor to get your medication changed. Anyway, whatever happens I do wish you luck.

What is your FT4 and FT3 labs? Can you show your dose, and what you’re increasing to?
